Mindfulness - learn this and change your life and I'm going to give you a powerful easy mindfulness exercise - The Mindfulness Minute. Mindfulness is critical - it's fundamental; it is one of the pillars upon which my model is based. It is the most effective behavior change modality period. It has changed my life and the lives of so many of my clients. Do it and it will help you cure your cravings, be less angry, and happier. Kind of a no brainer right? What is it? Mindfulness pioneer John Kabat-Zinn (check this guy out) defined mindfulness as follows. Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, without judgement (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p. 4). It's being present, not living in the past, not automatically reacting to external stimuli like a sexual trigger. It's being here and it's being now. I talk more about this in my online course, but I want to put mindfulness in perspective for you, there are a number of ways to achieve and practice mindfulness: meditation is the most common and popular way. Another way to experience is to actually do whatever you're doing and focus on that thing you are doing to the exclusion of all else - instead of your mind bouncing around like a pinball. When you walk walk, when you talk talk, when you eat eat - focus on the now! I'm going to give you a simple exercise at the end of this module. Not only is mindfulness a critical tool in the fight against compulsive behaviors it has a whole bunch of other incredible benefits. mindfulness is not only associated with feeling less stressed, it's also linked with decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, It Protects your brain, It makes you a better person - more compassionate, It helps you sleep better, Is a key to win with compulsive behaviour "Mindfulness is also compromised when you behave compulsively or automatically, without awareness of or attention to one's behavior Mindfulness is mission critical brothers and sisters. Here is the easiest mindfulness exercise that I want you to do right now. I call it The Mindful Minute. Dedicate one Breath and count your breaths for one minute - to the exclusion of all else. It's that easy. Sit down, hold you back straight, close your eyes almost all the way, and breath. Focus only on your breaths and counting. Breath in, out - one; in . . . out . . . two. Watch how quickly the mind starts racing and thinking of other things. Watch the pinball bounce around. Most people can't get to three or four their first try. When you get distracted, gently bring your focus back to your breaths and the counting. Breath, and count your breaths . . . that's it.

This is significant because your triggers are biologically hardwired. They are not going away. Knowing this is significant because it gives you an instant opportunity to discharge the shame that we have or that many of us have around our behaviors. We feel crappy, we feel terrible, we feel bad, we feel miserable, we get lower and then what does that do? That just makes us fail again. What if instead of those triggers driving our addiction, driving our compulsion, those triggers, actually triggered positive action. What if we got millions of dollars and we developed an app that immediately alerted the user that they were slipping out of present, speeding into habitland? We’d be rich. It would change lives, but fortunately such an app is not needed - the alert system you seek is already inside you - it’s the same one’s driving you insane. Beep - it’s time to wake up. Why because what is always going to proceed YOU acting out sexually? What is always going to proceed you acting out in anger? What is always going to proceed your movement towards the cigarettes or pot or drugs or alcohol or eating, gambling? YOUR TRIGGERS I want you to think of your triggers as an alarm clock, as a wakeup call, as an opportunity, a gift. I want to change your perspective. Do this and completely change your life. Over the course of next few days pay attention to your triggers. Play with them - use them to “hack” your addiction cycle. Use your triggers to say wait a minute, For example: here’s my trigger to check out a hot chick, or a trigger to watch porn, or get angry . . . you pick. And ask yourself what if I use that trigger to program myself, to reprogram my brain, to use that trigger to do something else? What if that same trigger drove you to take positive action. Use your triggers as opportunities. Because they ain’t going away. I talk a lot about this powerful concept in my online course and my one on one coaching. It’s powerful and it changes lives. It changed mine. Now it’s your turn. See your triggers for the gift that they actually are and use them to embrace your power of choice.
