How to Introduce Copepods into your Reef Aquarium

02:43
http://mdshop.us/2dJkbOw Copepods are tiny crustaceans that consume organic waste and are an excellent natural source of fish food. They often find their way into reef aquariums as hitchikers on live rock, coral frags, and macroalgae. You can also introduce these beneficial little critters into your tank to increase the diversity of species and boost populations. We carry a couple of different varities of live aquacultured copepods from Florida-based biotechnology firm, AlgaGen. In today's video, we'll show you how to safely introduce them into your tank to create a more biodiverse reef system! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SHOP AlgaGen ReefPODS Tisbe Live Copepods - Consumes waste and is food for reef inhabitants http://mdshop.us/2dJkR6y AlgaGen ReefPODS Live Apocyclops - Food for mandarins, dragonettes, and seahorses http://mdshop.us/2dJjZyB AlgaGen PhycoPure Zooxanthellae - Helps recovery, polyp extension, and coloration http://mdshop.us/1TQaD4R AlgaGen PhycoPure Reef Blend - 9 species of microalgae that copepods feed upon http://mdshop.us/2dJiQat ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CREDITS Special thanks to Miss Saltwater Tank for the awesome Mandarin Goby and Scooter Blenny footage. How to Set Up a Refugium Inside Your Sump

05:02
http://mdshop.us/1WYnFNo Refugiums are great! Not only do they provide a means to export waste and nutrients, they also create a safe haven for small, beneficial organisms to grow and reproduce. These small creatures — including copepods, amphipods and other "bugs" — growing in your refugium will help devour leftover food and detritus. Some of these "bugs" inevitably make their way into your display tank, where they will help feed the animals and increase the biodiversity in your reef aquarium. In this video, we are going to set up a refugium inside a Trigger Systems Emerald sump, provide helpful tips to make setup hassle-free and show you how to get the most out of your refugium! Build an inexpensive Macroalgae Reactor to reduce Nitrate and Phosphate

03:10
http://mdshop.us/2e4739Z We are always exploring new and better ways to export nutrients from our aquariums to give our fish and coral the cleanest water possible. Growing macro algae in a refugium is a tried and true method that many of us utilize. As the macro algae grows, it consumes nitrates and phosphates. Once you ‘harvest’ the algae, those organics are removed from your system. One drawback is that setting up an in-sump or external refugium can sometimes be difficult with all the plumbing requirements, it can take up a lot of space and can be costly. An online forum member gave us an awesome idea for a simple and affordable way to easily create an algae reactor. We have been testing it out for the past 4-5 months and it has proven to work great so without further ado, I present to you guys the Macroalgae Reactor. We are not the first ones to think of this concept, but after seeing just how effective and easy it is to make one, we really wanted to offer an affordable way to get these reactors installed in reef tanks everywhere. Take a media reactor and wrap an LED light strip around it. We took one of our best-selling AquaMaxx media reactors and mated it with an Accel Aquatics LED light strip. A couple of zip ties work well to hold the strip light in place. The AquaMaxx Media Reactor features a large transparent 4” diameter body so there is plenty of space for the macro algae to grow. These reactors are also available in 4 different sizes so you can get one as big or as small as you like. The Accel Aquatics LED strip is a great match at it is a high-powered LED strip that provides 12 Watts of warm-white light to grow macro algae. One big plus is that no sump/refugium is required. All you need is the reactor, the light, a couple of zip ties, tubing, a small pump and your choice of macro algae: such as chaetomorpha. This algae reactor can simply sit beneath your aquarium like a canister filter, or you can hang it on the side of your tank or sump. With the high-output LED lights being as close to the macro algae as possible and illuminating the grow-out chamber 360 degrees, we have found the chaeto to grow impressively fast. We are having to harvest algae every two weeks: each time leaving about 1/4 of the algae behind to continue to grow. Copepods, amphipods and other beneficial refugium critters also proliferate in this chamber and provide natural food for your aquarium inhabitants. For hobbyists that have tangs, you can even use an algea reactor to grow algae to feed your fish. Macroalgaes such as caulerpa and gracilaria can grow quickly and would work well for this purpose. For something so simple these algae reactors definitely exceeded our expectations. For those of you looking for an effective and inexpensive way to export nutrients and add natural fauna in to your aquarium an algae reactor is a great option. Coral Food: Make Your Corals Fat and Healthy

03:56
While every single one of us feed our fish, not everyone is aware of the importance of feeding the corals in our aquariums. Corals are animals and while most of them obtain a majority of their energy from photosynthesis, it is also very important to feed them to ensure they have the necessary building blocks to grow and thrive. All corals have mouths and there is a good reason for it. Many corals exert a lot of energy and have developed a significant portion of their biology to capture food, even SPS corals that are highly-dependent on light for survival can benefit greatly from feeding. Hobbyists are often pleasantly surprised to see how well their corals respond to feeding. The coloration becomes much more vibrant, the corals grow quicker and their flesh becomes meatier and healthier. Today we are going to share the Marine Depot staff's favorite coral foods with you. These are the foods we use to feed the SPS, LPS and soft corals in our own aquariums. We'd love to hear in the comments what coral foods—or combinations of foods—you use so that we can try them in our own tanks. Questions? Improve water quality naturally with Brightwell Aquatics Xport Biological Filter Media

03:41
http://mdshop.us/2dVKIv2 With so many choices for biological filtration media in a reef tank. It is often difficult to decide what to use. Bio Balls, live rock, ceramic rings, sintered glass there are just so many choices! The new Brightwell Aquatics Xport Bio and Xport NO3 have several advantages that makes them superior filter media and a clear winner in many applications. One characteristic that makes one filter media ‘better’ than another is the total surface area. The more surface area there is, the more area there is to grow the bacteria that breaks down waste. In this respect, the new Brightwell Xport Plates and Dimpled bricks are at the very top of the chart! Having 71,000 square feet of surface area per liter of media, the Xport Bio and NO3 has more surface area than any other filtration media: 20 times more porous than most ceramic media, a thousand times more porous than sintered glass and thousands of times more porous than Bio Balls. Each brick or plate of media is capable of supporting enough bacteria for an aquarium up to 1,250 gallons depending on the bio load. Another significant advantage the Xport Blocks has over the competition is that the material is never fired or heated; so, there is zero chance of aluminum leaching back into your aquarium and causing negative effects. To improve effectiveness, the media is ‘doped’ or mixed with aragonite. This extra step buffers pH at the bacteria level and prevents acid build up. In competing products, the acid build up eventually kills bacteria and reduces the capacity and efficiency of the filter media. The Xport’s extreme porousness (run water through plate) also allows the media to be capable of processing a large volume of water to filter the tank efficiently. It will also stay wet for up to 36 hours when out of water. This means the bacteria will stay alive during this time and you run much less risk of a tank crash after a power failure. For aquariums that require just biological filtration, the Xport Bio can be placed in a sump with fast water flow to break down fish waste in to ammonia, then nitrite then nitrate. If denitrification is desired, you can place Xport Bio in a portion of your sump where water flow is slow. The slower water flow will allow anaerobic zones to develop inside the plate or brick. Anaerobic bacteria will then colonize in those zones and will begin to break down nitrate into nitrogen gas. When maximum nitrate reduction is desired, the Xport NO3 is the better choice. It is extremely unique in that sulfur is embedded and mixed into the material. When placed in a slow water flow area, a specialized bacterium that consumes both sulfur and nitrate will colonize the brick or plate and efficiently break down nitrates. For those without sumps, the Xport Plates and Bricks can also be cut into size to fit a canister filter or hang-on-the-back filters. Brightwell also makes cube versions that can be placed just about anywhere. Soaking the Xport material in a mixture of aquarium water and Microbacter7 for 24 hours prior to installation in your tank will seed the bricks with beneficial bacteria and drastically speed up the time it takes for bacteria to establish. You can then continue to dose the Microbacter7 into your aquarium to help reduce organic waste thereafter. Brightwell Xport filter media is great for any reef aquarium, saltwater aquarium and even freshwater aquariums. Its unique characteristics give it significant advantages over similar biological filter media so be sure to check this stuff out. Aquarium Test Kits: Parameters to Test for in Fish-Only and Reef Tanks

05:20
Today we are going to share which water parameters you need to test for in a fish-only or reef aquarium, explain how these parameters effect fish and coral as well as provide tips on how to choose the right test kits for your tank. Some hobbyists claim they can tell how good or bad their water quality is just by looking at the tank. The reality is when the water quality is so poor that you can tell just by looking at it, you've already subjected your fish and coral to lousy living conditions far longer than you should have and fixing the problem will now require greater effort. Keeping your aquarium water parameters stable and at ideal levels is crucial to the health and well-being of the animals in your care. That’s why it’s essential to test your water regularly and log the results. Actively monitoring your water quality helps you identify trends or notice changes before they become problematic, making it easier to resolve any issues that may be develop. How To Mix Saltwater For Your Aquarium

04:56
http://mdshop.us/1MqfKSJ Through the evolution of keeping a reef tank, one thing that stays consistent is the need to perform water changes. Water changes remove waste and replenish the necessary elements your tanks inhabitants need to grow and thrive. Many of us start by purchasing saltwater from a local fish store for water changes, which does have its benefits—but also leaves some mystery in terms of the quality of water and what is actually going into your tank. If the store's filter system is not regularly maintained, there may be nitrates, phosphate or other impurities in the water. Some salt mixes work better for fish-only aquariums, while others with higher levels of calcium, alkalinity and major/minor elements are better for reef aquariums. If a store changes salt mixes, it may also have unexpected effects in your aquarium. Mixing your own saltwater at home is, in fact, a better way to obtain saltwater because it allows you to choose the salt best suited for your aquarium and allows you to control many of the variables. Thankfully, mixing saltwater is fairly easy—but must be done correctly. And, of course, you will first need all of the necessary equipment. In today's Marine Depot video, we are going to show you exactly what you'll and what to do to start mixing your own saltwater at home. How to Control Phosphate in a Reef Tank

04:08
Phosphate plays a big role in reef keeping. Understanding how they work in an aquarium will help you grow beautiful corals and keep a pristine tank. With too much phosphate, you will have algae problems and your corals will suffer. On the other hand, if you get overzealous and maintain zero phosphate for an extended period of time, your corals and other important organisms in your reef aquarium will starve. In this video we explain the various methods of controlling phosphate in a reef tank. It is suitable for use with a wide range of filter media including bio-pellets. Installing a media reactor on your home aquarium is very beneficial. You can reduce nuisance algae by lowering phosphates, obtain crystal clear water, and even lower nitrates with the use of Bio-Pellets. One unique feature of this reactor is the no frills maintenance. The inside filter media chamber can be removed while the reactor is running. Simply remove the chamber, replace your media, rinse the media inside the chamber, and then install back into your aquarium. This saves you the hassle of turning off the pump and removing any tubing making for quick, hassle free maintenance. The CustomCaddy Media Basket is a great upgrade to your existing media basket for a few reasons. It will allow you to add the filter media of your choice as the internal shelves are adjustable allowing for different size media. It is much larger and constructed of durable, 100% acrylic. It also has large holes drilled into the divider plates allowing for maximum flow through the media basket. The MagnaFuge LED Refugium light allows you to make some really slick modifications to your all in one aquarium. When used in conjunction with the CustomCaddy media basket you can easily create a refugium or natural filter in the back of your tank. First, add the macro-algae of your choice and place the magnet inside the bottom chamber of the media basket. Then, proceed to cut away the back covering from your aquarium as shown here. Be sure the peel the black covering slowly to ensure a clean removal. Then, attach the Magnafuge LED Light and your on the road to lower nitrates! The SkimMate Protein skimmer has all the features of a larger in-sump skimmer jammed into a nano size package. It comes with a needlewheel venturi pump, includes a hang-on bracket, is constructed of solid cell cast acrylic, includes and air silencer and has a compact form factor. It is available in two models and will accommodate aquariums up to 65 gallons. In order to fine tune the foam level, you can adjust the valve on the air silencer. For larger adjustments, you can move the skimmer up and down via the hang-on bracket. You will see that we installed a second MiniMax Media reactor in close vicinity to the protein skimmer. This is a really cool upgrade because a protein skimmer is crucial to your success with Bio-Pellets and will help quickly eliminate the bio-film created from the Bio-Pellet process. Thanks for tuning in.
