Danube provides livelihoods as it flows into the Black Sea

05:26
LEADIN The Danube is a watery thread 2,857 kilometers (1,775 miles) long. It flows from its beginnings in Germany , through Central Europe and out into the Black Sea from Ukraine , where thousands of people depend upon it for their livelihoods. STORYLINE: The Danube is many things to many people. To the people who live near the Ukrainian delta it is everything....waterway, food source....life blood. Oleg Polovtsiev has been fishing these waters all of his adult life. But there are no fish to be caught today, due to seasonal variations and migrations. When the fish do return to these waters, the numbers that can be caught are restricted by law. The best seasons for fishing are March-April and October-December. Fishing is the only source of income for many who live on the banks of the great river. More than half the population of Vilkovo, a small town of 8000 residents, depend on the menfolk fishing herring, carp, catfish or roach. In a control room men watch monitors to help steer large vessels through the Danube's course. The navigable channel "Danube-Black Sea" is only half complete and many of the jobs promised have not materialised. The Starostambulsky arm of the Danube was deepened in 2007 to allow the passage of cargo and passenger ships. The project was not without controversy as Vasyl Prokopenko, from the Delta-pilot unit of the State enterprise "Ukraine Sea Port Authority explains. "Over the years of its use (the Danube-Black Sea channel) has shown its economic sense. There were a lot of artificial problems over how this project would effect the environment of the Lower Danube, including the Danube biosphere preserve. But it was implemented so well, that there was not a single serious accident or negative impact on the all the elements of the hydro system, from hydrology to birds and animals, because the project was developed very clearly in line with all the environmental norms." The construction of dams in the 20th century has reduced the water flow in the Danube dramatically, according to environmentalists like Oleksander Volovshkevich, the director of the Danube Biosphere Reserve: "We lost a great quantity of water, the hydrological regime of our waters and in a number of channels has worsened significantly. On the whole, the Ukrainian Danube delta is rapidly deteriorating" he says. Here the river forms a natural boundary between Ukraine and Romania as Major Serhiy Adamchuk, head of the local Ukrainian Border Guard explains: "Romania is located the right bank of the Old Stambul bed of the Danube there is Romania and Ukraine on the left. The main difficulty in keeping the Danube safe is the poor accessibility of this region, which we must safeguard. Because the border runs along the river, we need special equipment to safeguard it." Border guards are on duty in speedboats to check the boats and their passengers. Visas are not required, but travellers need to give their personal details to border staff, but they are not permitted to land on the shores of the country that they are not resident. Local residents and fishermen also report potential violations to the border guards. In recent years Russian tourists have been discovering the beauty and wildlife of the Ukrainian Danube Delta, often enjoying a pleasure boat cruise of the Danube Biosphere Reserve. Their goal - to see the "zero" kilometre sign of the Danube. The sign "0 km" is set where the Danube flows into the Black Sea at Ochakov Way. "Pelican tour" operator Mykhailo Zhmud was one of the first to develop the tourism on the Ukrainian side of the Danube. Zhmud now owns his fleet of small ships, hotel and restaurant on the banks of the river. The river carries an immense amount of silt. 9 Dec - Germany You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/2a7181c7d8290014b3e98fbbf7e4acad Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Leading waterway

10:51
There is remarkable similarity between the Volga-Don and a typical busy highway. The waterways of the Volga-Don basin are some of the most overstretched shipping waterways. Forty vessels pass through the locks every day. The canal’s design carrying capacity of 10.5 million tonnes per year has virtually been exceeded. There is an obvious need to build a second Volga-Don channel. Building of the second Volga-Don channel corresponds to demands for an innovative course of growth for the Russian economy and corresponds to global worldwide trends.

Why Countries Are Landlocked + Canals

06:30
Why are some countries landlocked? In the case of Bolivia its because they lost a war with Chile. Ethiopia and Serbia granted independence to the parts of their countries that had a coast. Some countries like uzbekistan, are so far inland that they are doubly landlocked, which means they are both landlocked and completely surrounded by other landlocked countries. When a country is landlocked it can be difficult for them to trade, and they often have to rely on their neighbours. In Europe, the danube river lets many landlocked countries have some access to the black sea. As well, many canals exist which lets small ships travel deep inland, providing some of the benefits of having a coast. Some countries may look landlocked, but when viewed closely you can see they have tiny coasts. You can watch this video I made which explores the weird borders in those situations: https://youtu.be/elybAzSVSHc

8 Famous Shipping Canals Of The World

06:47
8 Famous Shipping Canals Of The World The White Sea – Baltic Sea Canal The White Sea-Baltic Sea Canal is an important waterway that regularizes traffic internally along the Russian waterways starting from the White Sea in the north and extending to the Baltic Sea down south. Constructed in the year 1933, the shipping canal passes through various smaller water bodies before finally emerging into the Baltic Sea. Rhine-Main-Danube Canal Linking three important rivers in the heart of Western Europe, the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal or the Europa Canal was originally built as early as the 1938s. Over the years there have been several constructional extensions that have been made to the canal, the last one being carried out in the early 1990s. The Europa Canal is a major marine transportation gateway linking the North Sea to the Black Sea, via the Atlantic Ocean. It is also an important shipping gateway within Europe. Suez Canal The Suez Canal is an extremely crucial and famous shipping canal allowing the passage of vessels between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The canal was constructed in the mid-1800s and as has been recognized as a maritime route to be open at all times, to shipping vessels of all countries in order to facilitate continuity in maritime trade operations irrespective of global conflicts. Volga-Don Canal The Volga-Don ship canal interlinks the Russian rivers Volga and Don in-turn, providing an important water passage through the Azoff Sea (a bay of the Black Sea) and the Caspian Sea to the major oceanic networks. The original construction work on the canal was started as early as the 16th century and the route was considered important because of the fact that it provided a much passage to connect the Eastern European shipping networks with their Western counterparts. Kiel Canal Connecting the Baltic Sea with the North Sea, the Kiel Canal passes through the German province of Schleswig-Holstein. The constructional aspect of the water route dates back to the 1700s, though the construction of the present-day Kiel water conduit began only during the late 1890s. Using the shipping canal allows vessels to bypass the longer route that passes via Denmark (peninsula of Jutland), which is regarded to quite an unstable maritime route. Houston Ship Canal Mainly utilised to provide passage of ships entering the Houston harbour into the Gulf of Mexico, the Houston Ship Canal, is a vital water conduit in the internal United States. Although occurring naturally, the shipping canal has been broadened in order to ensure its continued viability. The Houston Ship Canal has been in existence and operation since the mid 1830s. Panama Canal One of the most crucial maritime gateways in the western region, the Panama Canal provides connectivity between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean through the Panama isthmus. The canal was built in the year 1914 and has been a major marine route since then, with high levels of marine traffic passing through it on either sides. Danube-Black Sea Canal The Danube-Black Sea conduit is yet another important passage in the western European region. In addition to connecting the Danube River to the Black Sea, this shipping canal also in a way interlinks the Black Sea to the North Sea by way of the Danube-Main-Rhine conduit and provides a maritime passage to Eastern Europe by way of the Volga-Don canal. The Danube: River of Life

38:51
Religious, scientific, environmental and political leaders travel the Danube from Passau, Germany, to its delta on the Black Sea and explore the common ground between pragmatic environmental issues and the spiritual dimensions of nature. In the aftermath of the conflict in the former Republic of Yugoslavia, the challenge of protecting and improving the condition of the Danube has become even more urgent. This film focuses attention on the impacts of war, urban development, industrialization, shipping and agriculture and what can be done to restore the Danube River. The symposium on which the film is based generated strong media attention and inspired significant new initiatives in the region. "We stood before the bridges of Novi Sad and implored God--in the presence of religious leaders of the city--to restore the environment of that region in the face of the destruction of war. Before us was the costly price for our inhumane behavior." - His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

Constanta Travel 2018 Romania Guide Tour Constanta 2018 is located in the county of the same name, in the southeastern part of Romania. It is located on the Black Sea coast, in a lagoon to the east, hilly in the north and in the central part, and in the plain to the south and west. The city of Constanţa has a 6 km long private beach. Constanta Romania 2018 was founded after the Greek colonization of the Black Sea basin (Greek Pontos Euxeinos) by the merciful colonists in the 7th-5th centuries BC, under the name of Tomis. This name is probably derived from the Greek word (Tomí) meaning cut, cleavage. According to the legend, Iason and his arrogates would have been here after they were sent to the Caucasus to steal the "Golden Wool." Followed by King Colhide's fleet, Aietes "Uliul", he had cut off his son, Absyrtos, until then held hostage on board to force the king to seek and gather the remains for the funeral ceremony, giving the Argonautes The time required to run for the Bosphorus. However, archaeologists consider it more plausible that the cut (shoreline) would rather have designated the ancient port, today submerged, in front of the Casino. Another possible origin of the name would be Tomiris, the Queen of the Massages, a getic tribe living between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea (Herodotus). The Milezians found a getic settlement in these places, the new city reaching the level of a polis only in the IV-III century BC. The port used by the Greeks to trade with the inhabitants of these regions (Dacians, Scythians and Celts) Of an urban center. Tomis became part of the Roman Empire in the year 46, being renamed Constantiana. Publius Ovidius Naso, the Roman poet, found his exile between 8-17 years. And spent the last eight years in Constantia in Constanta. Constanta the most beautiful city in the world! The city of Constanța is one of the most important in Romania, one of four roughly equal-size cities which rank after Bucharest. The Constanța metropolitan area, founded in 2007, comprises 14 localities located at a maximum distance of 30 km (19 mi) from the city, and, with 387,593 inhabitants,it is the third largest metropolitan area in Romania.Situated at the crossroads of several commercial routes, Constanța lies on the western coast of the Black Sea, 185 miles (298 km) from the Bosphorus Strait. An ancient metropolis and Romania's largest sea port, Constanța traces its history some 2,500 years. Originally called Tomis, legend has it that Jason landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece. One of the largest cities in Constanța Romania is now an important cultural and economic center, worth exploring for its archaeological treasures and the atmosphere of the old town center. Its historical monuments, ancient ruins, grand Casino, museums and shops, and proximity to beach resorts make it the focal point of Black Sea coast tourism. Open-air restaurants, nightclubs and cabarets offer a wide variety of entertainment. Regional attractions include traditional villages, vineyards, ancient monuments and the Danube Delta, the best preserved delta in Europe. euronews futuris - Maps: Colouring in the Black Sea

08:31
http://www.euronews.com/ What do microscopic molecules and huge computer grids have in common? They both build up giant scientific databases of ecosystems around the World. But it is a tricky process. This is the story of how researchers around the Black Sea are struggling to get the bigger picture out of tiny details. On the shores of the Danube River there is an unusual team. Romanian and Ukranian scientists are embarking on a common research trip. They are assessing the hydrological and biological health of the Danube Delta, a huge Biosphere Reserve shared by both countries. The news is good. "Algae blooming is decreasing. And lately we have seen the development of some aquatic species that are biological indicators of a better quality of the water around here," explains Jenica Hanganu, Ecologist of the Danube Delta Research Institute. Less industrial discharges and more efficient water treatment plants are indeed improving water quality in the Danube Delta. But the region is facing other challenges. Iulian Michersu, Geographer with the Danube Delta Research Institute says: "The Danube has now many dams and dikes. That means that the Delta is narrower and the river is getting deeper, and that affects the biodiversity of the whole area. Oaks that used to grow on the shores are retreating, because the river flow is becoming much more vertical than horizontal and it offers less ground." Challenges are similar on the Delta's Ukranian side. The river's own environmental patterns are no respecter of the political borders. "The main problem on the Ukranian side of the Delta is dramatic high water levels caused by floods. Also, the construction of dams along the Danube has caused difficulties in the water exchanges between the river and the adjacent lakes - that leads to the ecological exhaustion of these basins," points out Mikhail Kornilov, Hydrologist with the Danube Hydrometeorological Observatory. Water samples, zooplancton and sediments gathered during the research cruise are then taken to labs for further analysis. Here again the news is encouraging as Liliana Teodorof, chemist with the Danube Delta Research Institute explains: "Over the last few years, we have indeed seen a decrease in the concentrations of heavy metals like cadmium, zinc and lead. These heavy metals, originating from industry and agricultural sources, are still present, but their incidence is retreating both in the sediments and in the water of the Danube Delta". This chemical, atmospheric, microbiological and zoological data gathering is regularly performed on the Danube Delta. But the results are not kept in a lab's drawer. Instead, all this data is flying high. In Geneva, environmental data from around the Black Sea basin, including the Danube Delta, is being used to elaborate interactive maps and databases for the sake of busy researchers. "They say that we researchers lose 50 percent of our time, if not more, sifting through all the scientific data. And often it arrives here in very different formats, with qualities which are also very different. So we have to transform the data to be compatible with the software we use," explains Gregory Giuliani, Environmental scientist, with the University of Geneva. The whole Black Sea basin is 2.2 million square kilometres, which means a deluge of daily data to be processed. So scientists from a European Union research project needed a helping hand in the form of Grid computing. Nicolas Ray a biologist at the University of Geneva, with the help of a map full of dots explains: "Each of these points represents a University or other computing centre that provides us with tens, hundreds or thousands of computers. So we have access to some of this computing grid that allows us to send our simulations on multiple computers simultaneously and thus shorten the total computation time for our hydrological model." Researchers have so far developed computer models for soil uses, demography and hydrological data - like water flows or level of pesticides - in the Black Sea basin, shared by 20 countries. And all is provided in formats adapted to different platforms. "Here we see the same example, it is stored in our system and, in one click, I can see it on Google Earth. Potentially I can also take it on a smartphone or tablet, I can see exactly the same data, and we're going to immediately start working, and thus spend more time doing the analysis of what we have been given or understand the phenomena instead of wasting time looking for information," says Gregory Giuliani an environmental scientist at the University of Geneva. It is located on the Black Sea coast, in a lagoon to the east, hilly in the north and in the central part, and in the plain to the south and west. The city of Constanţa has a 6 km long private beach. Mamaia Constanta was founded after the Greek colonization of the Black Sea basin (Greek Pontos Euxeinos) by the merciful colonists in the 7th-5th centuries BC, under the name of Tomis. Bicycle touring Video - Croatia to the Black Sea

02:55
Our adventure continues from the Croatian coast to the Black Sea. A flicker of clips detailing the road from Croatia through Serbia, Romania and ending at the Black Sea in Bulgaria. From the crystal clear waters of Croatia, along the mighty Danube, past hundreds of friendly faces and over rolling hills of corn. Finishing finally aboard the giant cargo ship that will take across the Black Sea to Georgia. The views, landscapes and sights from the road are often breathtaking, but with these films I try and capture the little bits in-between all this. The smiles, a meal cooked from the bounty of the days riding, just the simple things of travelling by bike. The soundtrack "Alive" by Tess Creasy is an inspirational video for all to take a step to adventure or travel, to live a great life. I first heard this track live at Tess's album release party 1 month before the start of our adventure. I knew instantly it was a perfect track to capture this journey and the emotions of what I hoped this trip would stir, the feeling of being Alive. To feel every sense and be fascinated at every turn in the road, to experience struggle and elation, absorbing it all in the moment. Check out Tess Creasy on iTunes and Youtube for her full Album "Alive" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDIMyBJquZnsZbDxGXmlawQ

Romania - Danube Delta, Part 1 - (A UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site)

11:27
A wildlife paradise unique in Europe ... at the end of the great river Danube's 2,860 km ( 1788 miles) journey from the Black Forest mountains in Germany to Romania's Black Sea coast a natural paradise spreads out. Over countless centuries the silt brought down by the river has enlarged the Delta into a network of channels, lakes, reed isles, tropical woods, pastures and sand dunes that now cover nearly 5,640 sq km. (2,200 sq miles). This amazing wetland shelters over 300 species of birds, countless species of fish from royal sturgeon to carp and perch, while its 1,150 kinds of plants range from sinuous lianas in oak forests to water lilies. It is no wonder that UNESCO designated the Delta a "Reservation of the Biosphere".

Wrecks turn up diving for archeology in the Danube

Historic treasures, ripe for discovery, are lying within easy reach for divers at the bottom of long-undisturbed waterways. Romanian scuba professionals Iulian Rusu and Pascale Roibu have revealed three shipwrecks at around ten metres' depth where the longest river of Central Europe, the Danube, flows into the Black Sea. Just a few kilometres from the port of Sulina, the easternmost point of Romania, on the trade route between the grain growing regions of Europe that fed the Ottoman Empire,… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/06/16/wrecks-turn-up-diving-for-archeology-in-the-danube What are the top stories today? ROMANIA : INSIDE the DRACULA'S CASTLE - Full Documentary

41:36
Romania is a sovereign state located in Southeastern Europe. It borders the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova. It has an area of 238,397 square kilometres (92,046 sq mi) and a temperate-continental climate. With almost 20 million inhabitants, the country is the seventh most populous member state of the European Union. Its capital and largest city, Bucharest, is the sixth-largest city in the EU, with 1,883,425 inhabitants as of 2011. The River Danube, Europe's second-longest river, rises in Germany and flows in a general southeast direction for 2,857 km (1,775 mi), coursing through ten countries before emptying into Romania's Danube Delta. The Carpathian Mountains, which cross Romania from the north to the southwest, include Moldoveanu, at 2,544 m (8,346 ft). Modern Romania was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. At the end of World War I, Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia united with the sovereign Kingdom of Romania. During World War II, Romania was an ally of Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union, fighting side by side with the Wehrmacht until 1944, when it joined the Allied powers and faced occupation by the Red Army forces. Romania lost several territories, of which Northern Transylvania was regained after the war. Following the war, Romania became a socialist republic and member of the Warsaw Pact. After the 1989 Revolution, Romania began a transition towards democracy and a capitalist market economy. Romania is a developing country and one of the poorest in the European Union, ranking 50th in the Human Development Index, although as of 2017 its economy is growing at an estimated annual rate of 5%, tied with Malta for the highest in the EU. Following rapid economic growth in the early 2000s, Romania has an economy predominantly based on services, and is a producer and net exporter of machines and electric energy, featuring companies like Automobile Dacia and OMV Petrom. It has been a member of NATO since 2004, and part of the European Union since 2007. A strong majority of the population identify themselves as Eastern Orthodox Christians and are native speakers of Romanian, a Romance language. The cultural history of Romania is often referred to when dealing with influential artists, musicians, inventors, and sportspeople.
