Why Choose Fashion Styling Over Fashion Design Career - Lulu Chen

01:57
In Chapter 5 of 10 in her 2011 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, fashion stylist Lulu Chen answers "As an Artist, What Informed Your Decision to Choose Fashion Styling Over Fashion Design?" Chen gravitates toward magazines, stories, and editorials and, after many years working different part of the industry, chooses fashion design. She enjoys playing with the different designers' clothing and accessories and being able to use their colors, shapes, and textures as an artist uses a palette. She finds inspiration from designers who continuously produce new work. Lulu Chen is a New York City based fashion stylist. Chen earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree studying design and art history from the University of Michigan. View more career videos at http://www.captureyourflag.com Follow us on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/captureyourflag Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/captureyourflag Erik Michielsen: As an artist, what informed your decision to choose fashion styling over fashion design? Lulu Chen: When I was younger I loved fashion and I didn’t know what part of fashion I really wanted to pursue, and then, you know, I definitely learned about – I worked in PR; I worked in sales; I worked in advertising; and I just always was drawn to magazines and doing stories and editorials. I guess what I love about styling versus just being a designer is I get to play with all of the different designers’ clothes. I get to play with all of the different designers’ clothing, and, you know, for me to do a whole world of different options. It’s a whole palette of silhouettes, colors, designs, shapes, ideas. There’s so much great design out there and so many great designers that that’s what I do. I get to play with all the different clothes and accessories. Erik Michielsen: What have designers taught you about being a more effective stylist? Lulu Chen: I think to keep looking for inspiration. I think they do an amazing job. They have to come up with – and now there are so many collections each year. There are so many. It’s not just a few. And they’re constantly producing new work, so that’s really inspirational just to keep producing new work, new thoughts, you know, or even I guess expanding upon what’s already there, you know, inspired by vintage things, but ultimately, I think they’re inspiring because they have to produce so many different collections in a year, and it shows you how to be resilient.

How to Get an Internship at Seventeen Magazine | Life of a Journalist

10:20
How to Work in the Fashion Industry. Working in the fashion industry is a very competitive field. Just like any other career in order to get into the fashion industry you need work experience. To gain experience I would recommend getting an internship where you will gain hands-on experience and determine if you still want to work in the industry. You might find that you enjoy working in fashion magazines but not specifically in the fashion department. Interning allows you to get your feet wet without having to commit to that company. The beauty of being a student is that you get to learn about what you like and don’t like. Lulu Chen on How Online Retail and Editorial Fashion Jobs Compare

02:15
In Chapter 9 of 16 in her 2012 Capture Your Flag interview, art director Lulu Chen answers "How Does Working in Retail E-Commerce Compare and Contrast With the Work That You Have Done in Editorial?" Chen notes how the teams - photographers, models, stylists, etc. can be the same as can the process. However, the goals can be very different, as editorial goals can trend more toward aspirational brand communication whereas online retail or retail e-commerce is more functional, rooted in selling clothes that fit. Lulu Chen is a photo art director working in retail e-commerce in New York City. Previously, Chen worked as a freelance stylist for leading fashion catalogs and magazines. She earned a BFA in design and art history from the University of Michigan. Capture Your Flag is a career documentary interview series that interviews 60 up and coming leaders annually to gather knowledge and share a Near Peer Learning experience its audience may use to better plan, pursue and achieve life and career aspirations. How to Ace a PR Job Interview | Public Relations

02:28
Watch more How to Work in Public Relations videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508036-How-to-Ace-a-PR-Job-Interview-Public-Relations Here are my top interviewing tips for gaining a job in the field of public relations. First impressions are important, and in PR you need to dress the part. Wear something fashionable, on-trend, chic and not too corporate, unless you're applying for a corporate PR position. But if you're applying for anything in entertainment, fashion and brands, it's important again to dress on-trend. The next thing is being prepared. Come to the interview with writing samples, a clip book of press that you've pitched and placed. Now, I know if this is an entry level position, you may not have these things yet. But the fact that you know about them and that they exist and that you know that that's what you're going to be doing once you gain that job in PR, be prepared. So, have a sample of the way that you write. Give an example of what a prospective client would be for you and the sections and the placements you would like to get for them. If you came in to an interview with me, and let's say you didn't have any experience but you knew that field of PR, and you said, "If this was my client, this would be the pitch that I would pitch for them, and this is the sections in the magazine that I would get them in," and give me an example in that interview I'd be sold. And no one has done it to me yet. Like I said, your Rolodex is everything. So, you're going to be asked in an interview, "Who are your contacts? Who are your media relationships? What celebrity publicists or celebrity managers do you have relationships with?" Come in with three to five strong contacts that you can say, "These people will help me in the position at your company," because again, it's about who you know. Lulu Chen: How Fashion Advertising and Editorial Projects Differ

01:31
In Chapter 7 of 10 in her 2011 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, fashion stylist Lulu Chen answers "How do Ad or Commercial Jobs Compare and Contrast with Editorial Magazine Jobs?" She finds magazine jobs are more aspirational and offer greater creative freedom compared to advertising and catalog work. They also have more freedom to incorporate a wide array of brands. However, Chen notes how catalogs are catching up creatively, progressively turning to a "magalogue" focus that, while covering only one brand, integrates more of the creative and story elements seen traditionally in editorial or magazine work. Lulu Chen is a New York City based fashion stylist. Chen earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree studying design and art history from the University of Michigan. View more Near Peer career videos from the Capture Your Flag documentary series at http://www.captureyourflag.com Follow us on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/captureyourflag Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/captureyourflag Transcript: Erik Michielsen: How do ad or commercial jobs compare and contrast with editorial or magazine jobs? Lulu Chen: It’s usually more creative freedom with editorial jobs, and it’s a bit more aspirational, but I find that lately, you know – magazines are a brand as well, so you have to adhere to what they’re trying to convey for their target audience as well, so there’s still that creativity whereas advertising and catalogue, it’s more pointed. But, right now, catalogues are trying to be more aspirational, and actually some of them are looking more like magazines. Or they call it ‘magalogues’. It has more of a magazine feel. There's models. There's models with, you know, their significant others. There's some families, and actually, it reminds me of when we did Cargo magazine for men. We used a lot of – we would scout real people off the street. Erik Michielsen: Yeah. Lulu Chen: Or use friends. So they had that, and I loved it. I thought that was really interesting. So I think some catalogues are going in that direction. Technically, it’s different because magazines they’re trying to cover all the different designers and all the different brands, whereas when you work for one company, you know, when you do advertising and catalogue you’re working on one specific brand. Erik Michielsen: That’s right. Lulu Chen: In terms of merchandise.

Kate White: Editor-In-Chief, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Best-Selling Author, Keynote Speaker

05:30
Kate White is recognized internationally as not only the veteran editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, the best-selling women's magazine in the world, but also the critically acclaimed author of both fiction and nonfiction books. Few high-profile editors have balanced the rigors of overseeing a major magazine title with a thriving and independent writing career as successfully as Kate White. It all began when Kate White won Glamour magazine's "Top Ten College Women" contest and appeared on the cover. Kate earned a position at the magazine and quickly rose from editorial assistant to feature writer and columnist. After holding key jobs at several national magazines, she became an editor-in-chief, running four magazines (including Redbook) before taking the helm at Cosmopolitan in 1998. Drawing on experiences from her successful career, Kate White published the best-selling career bible Why Good Girls Don't Get Ahead... But Gutsy Girls Do. Her most recent nonfiction book is, You on Top: Smart Sexy Skills Every Woman Needs to Set the World on Fire. Kate White also has a passion for writing fiction. Penning her first novel, A Body to Die For, in 2004—which was selected as Live With Regis and Kelly's first "Reading With Ripa" book club pick and #1 on Amazon — Kate White introduced her gutsy and irreverent sleuth, Bailey Weggins. Ms. Weggins went on to solve more grisly murders and entertain readers in 'Til Death Do Us Part, If Looks Could Kill, Over Her Dead Body, and again in Lethally Blond - all New York Times best-sellers which were recently optioned by Lions Gate Pictures. Kate White's writing has been described by the New York Times as "scathingly observant," capturing "the mood...with a verisimilitude some of her peers might recognize." The Los Angeles Times says of Kate White's work: "It's like devouring a box of chocolates!" More About Speaker, Kate White . . . Kate White's highly anticipated 2010 first thriller, HUSH, marked her entry into a whole new genre and became a New York times bestseller. Hailed as a "pulse pounding, chilling, and provocative" read, it's the story of an ordinary woman who flees the scene of a brutal murder and realizes it's not just the law that is hunting her. Kate's latest thriller, The Sixes, takes place on a college campus where a secret society may be responsible for several grisly murders. Through her magazine work and her books, Kate White has influenced at least two generations of women with her unique honesty, passion, and imagination. She is the winner of the Matrix Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Communication" as well as the Woodhall Institute Award for Ethical Leadership. Full credits at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6842774/ Here's more on Mona: Mona Lucero has a love for both art and fashion. Indeed, Mona’s first memory is of creating a piece of art as a small girl. She vividly remembers drawing her sleeping grandmother’s portrait with a crayon. Voila! She thought the drawing captured her perfectly and at that moment, she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up - she wanted to be an artist. Born in San Francisco and growing up in Grand Junction, Colorado, she felt the contrast of the city and the small town. Her first fashion influence came from the very same grandmother, who stashed her varied handbags in a big steamer trunk. Upon turning 18, she crossed the Eisenhower Tunnel from Grand Junction to Denver to start art school at the University of Colorado. Yes, she was one of those art students who dressed eccentrically, mixing flight suits with fur collars, pink tennis shoes, pearls and colored hair and she avidly read fashion magazines. In her senior year, she realized she had found a new love in fashion design and upon attaining her degree, she moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, learning about the fast moving and intriguing fashion world. Upon her return to the Rocky Mountains, she worked in skiwear and activewear in a variety of fashion industry jobs including assistant patternmaker, screen print artist, technical designer, and designer. High fashion and street wear called, though, and she created her first collection which consisted of hand-dyed and screen printed dresses and separates, eventually selling her bags and clothing in boutiques. In a period of ten years, from 2002 to 2012, she tended to her clientele at her eponymous boutique in Denver’s Lower Highlands neighborhood. Over the years, she has created clothing with many pop culture themes: such as “The Butterfly Collection”; “Beauty & the Beast”; “Fellini-esque”; and “Love, Peace & Truth”. Her list of awards include: “Best Independent Boutique” from Denver’s Westword; 5280 Magazine; Fashion Group International; and nationally from City Magazine in New York City; nomination for Best Denver Designer by 303 Magazine; recognized as a top designer for Denver’s Fashion Project Contest, winner of Westword Magazine Fashion Mastermind Award. In 2017, she was chosen by Colorado’s Royal Gorge Bridge to design a dress on the bridge. Watch more about her spectacular experience here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kELs8MajvSw . Also in 2017, director Michael Lauter was inspired to produce the short film bio documentary, called “Art & Style: Mona Lucero” which focused on a year of her life (about mid-2016 to mid-2017).

When I launched myself as a designer, designers used to do a double designers shows in the sense that would be two designers would be presenting, you know, in a banquet hall, and it was all very organized. So I decided that I'm going to launch myself as a designer and I'm going to not do it with anybody else. I'm going to do a solo show. So all the headaches were on me and then I have challenged myself and I said, I'm not going to do it in a banquet hall. I'm going to do it at the Moody Gardens. Because as a kid I used to walk at the Moody Gardens and this beautiful monument. And I used to always go there and be mesmerized. 00:56 So I decided this is going to be the venue of my shoe. And to add to that, I say, I'm not going to use recorded music. I'm going to get real musicians. Because what I named my collection was a retrospective of the Indian fashion industry, so I went through ancient India, medieval India to modern India, and I went and approach to start, um, to the ECON. Soccer was in hurry, preset you. I got all of them to agree to do the music life for me. And then I was a little designer brand new out of the fashion institution, not knowing what I was doing, but I was presenting my collection at the garden. So I went through the necessary permissions. But the system is duff. So, um, apparently ludy gardens comes under many, many different corporations, so it became a very political event and I had to get permissions and licenses, which apparently I was not aware of. 01:57 I got a few thinking that that was all that I needed. So it became a huge challenge and a huge, um, the press went mad, especially Indian Express. They had me on the cover of every new, every newspaper for the next five days, which was super fun. At one level I had, I had no budgets to pay for publicity. So then I was on the front page and everybody was saying, who is this with dewberry, you know, we've never heard of barry and I became a household name with my very first show. So I really don't take any, any challenge as a problem. It's, there's no such thing as an impossible situation. And I think it's fun to experiment. It's fun to, you know, pave your own path and do something new. Or 02:47 when I was 02:47 in design school lives to go to the library and all I was looking for because I used to enjoy embroideries and I was inspired by embroideries. All I looked for books and Roswell, Assad and weren't many books, but you know, they used to have these uh, design magazines and they'd be a mention of embroidery by Francois lasage. So I've, I've went to London and I looked for books in libraries, but there was very little that I really found, and this was this strange, uh, but I think it was destined. I went to Paris, I think this was [inaudible] 93 or 92. And I was sitting with a very, very important person from Cartier in Paris and she said, is there anybody in the fashion business that you would like to meet? And the only name that completely lit up. And she says, she laughed at me and she said, you are you asking for the moon 03:42 He meets nobody. But, uh, she said, I'll give you his phone number and if you get somewhere, it's completely all luck. All I did for the next four days in Paris was go to a booth, make a goal to a for go have a coffee, go back to the booth. I did this. I think I must have made about 30 calls to him. And, uh, I didn't speak French and the secretary would pick up and she would just speak in French. I had no way to get to him. Finally, I tried really hard and I said to you, would you, do you know somebody who speaks English in the office? 05:04 So all these number ones that everybody was trying to say, I was the first here and number one here. And I like to, um, my competition is only with myself and I, I really mean that because since I began it, Dilla was in junior school, it was about my report card and I had to be the first in class, but when I hit senior school it all changed for me because, um, I was lost and I think I started getting creative and creative people are a bit mad and they don't see everything so rationally.
