Hugepages and databases working with abundant memory in modern servers

51:10
by Fernando Laudares At: FOSDEM 2019 https://video.fosdem.org/2019/K.1.105/hugepages_databases.webm The introduction of the 64-bit version of the x86 architecture allowed servers to operate with much larger amounts of memory and the use of memory pages of different sizes. This talk will explore the Linux kernel implementation of HugePages in view of two of the most popular open source RDBMS, MySQL and PostgreSQL. We will be looking at how HugePages works, what is necessary to configure to make use of it, and whether it is really worth and under which circumstances. The turn of the century saw the introduction of the 64-bit version of the popular x86 instruction set. The flagship feature of this new architecture specification was the use of a larger physical (and virtual) address space, increasing the practical memory limit of 4GB (or 64GB when in PAE mode) found in 32-bit x86 processors to values expressed in the order of Terabytes. Beyond the obvious advantage of operating with more memory, a bigger address space allowed programs to store larger amounts of data in memory: in many cases it made possible the mapping of entire files (instead of only fragments of it) in the respective process' address space. Another important factor to consider in this context is the translation of virtual memory (divided in "pages") into physical memory. This direct mapping is maintained in a data structure called "page table". However, each lookup made there is an expensive operation, thus the Memory Management Unit (MMU) employs a caching mechanism named Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) for faster lookups. Whenever a translation from virtual memory to physical memory is necessary the TLB is verified first. If the target entry is found to be there the physical address is promptly returned, otherwise a TLB miss is computed and a more costly lookup in the page table is made. But as any other cache, it can only fit a limited number of entries. Making optimal usage of this space is important: the bigger the page size is the most of the memory area will be mapped by the TLB. Applications that perform a lot of memory accesses may obtain performance improvements by using large pages due to reduced TLB misses (https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/large-page-support.html). A class of software that potentially benefits from operating with huge pages is that of database systems with their particular caching mechanisms. The PostgreSQL manual (https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.6/static/kernel-resources.html) states that "using huge pages reduces overhead when using large contiguous chunks of memory, as PostgreSQL does, particularly when using large values of shared_buffers". While MySQL and PostgreSQL do have support for huge pages MongoDB doesn't. Applications running in userland that do not natively support huge pages may indirectly make use of them through a kernel feature named Transparent HugePages (THP). But does it works the same ? Furthermore, the enabling and use of huge pages is not made through a simple configuration flag that may be turned on or off: one needs to specify the number of huge pages needed in advance as well as the preferable page size. How should a database administrator makes this choice, and based in which factors ? Is there any tweaks necessary in the database side in order to benefit from huge pages ? What are the possible drawbacks in its use ? In this presentation we'll have a look at how this applies to MySQL and PostgreSQL. Room: K.1.105 (La Fontaine) Scheduled start: 2019-02-02 16:00:00+01

SQLPLUS: LineSize & PageSize

03:49
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to set linesize and pagesize . PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

How to split a PDF document into multiple files FREE on Windows 10 7 8.1 tutorial. Splitting PDF Documents Into Multiple Documents you will need to install PDFsam Basic on your computer PDFsam Basic is a desktop application freely accessible from the project's page both as source and compiled code. It is available as MSI package for 32-bit and 64-bit MS Windows, .dmg for Mac OS X, .deb package for Debian based GNU/Linux distributions and ZIP bundle for the power users' convenience. You can download it for free from the http://www.pdfsam.org/download-pdfsam... Download Java runtime environment: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/jav... PDF documents selection: Merge PDF files by selecting and arranging the ones you want to combine, using the selection table. Drag and drop files on it or click Add to add documents. Use the buttons Move Up and Move Up or the context menu entries to arrange the documents order. You can merge PDF files together or just select some of their pages, to do that double click on the Page ranges cell and specify the pages you want to merge, i.e. if don't need the whole document but you only want to merge some pages. Pages can be specified in the form of comma separated page ranges like 2-13,17 if you need pages from 2 to 13 and page 17. You can use the syntax 20- if you need pages from page 20 to the end of the document. Encrypted documents Encrypted PDF documents show a icon on their right. You can merge them by providing the unlock password and to do so just click on the lock icon. Merge settings Most users won't need to change these settings but it may come helpful to know what is their purpose. Add a blank page if page number is odd: with this option you can tell PDFsam Basic to add a blank page after every merged PDF whose page number is odd Interactive forms: If some of the merging PDF documents contain an AcroForm, this options tells PDFsam what to do with them. You can discard the forms if they are not needed, you can merge them together allowing fields with the same name or you can merge them renaming fields with the same name to avoid names clashes Outline (Bookmarks): with this option you can tell PDFsam what to do with the documents outline (bookmakrs). Retain: bookmarks trees from the input PDF documents can be retained and merged together Discard: bookmarks are discarded saving some byte Create one entry for each merged document: a new outline containing a bookmark entry for each merged PDF document is created. Each entry pointing to the first page of the merged document Retain bookmarks as one entry for each document: a new outline containing a bookmark entry for each merged PDF document is created. Each entry will contain the whole outline of the merged document Generated document In Destination file users can choose the name of the resulting PDF document and few other options. Merge! Once all the options are properly set you can merge the PDF files by clicking the Run button. If no error occurs, the progress bar will grow until it is fully colored and a friendly ding sound will tell you that your merged PDF is ready.

FIXED 500 Internal Server Error on WordPress

09:03
FIXED 500 Internal Server Error on WordPress https://youtu.be/OhWUvQU2diU Grab your free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL The 500 internal server error is not a WordPress-specific error. It is a general server error that may be related to your server settings or your WordPress files. Use the information in this tutorial to troubleshoot the 500 internal server error you are receiving. Here are the things you'll need to troubleshoot. 1. Your htaccess file may be corrupted. Try renaming it and see if that fixes the 500 error. If it does then the problem is in the htaccess file. 2. You may have reached the memory limit on your hosting account. Try increasing the limit using one of the methods outlined in this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmlGHje1V50 3. Try replacing the wp-admin and wp-include folders with fresh versions of those folders. This one is more complicated. Basically you'd backup those two folders in your hosting account and upload those two folders from a fresh version of WordPress downloaded from WordPress.org. Check Your Plugins The first 500 internal server error troubleshoot is by deactivating all of your plugins. To do this log into your site files using FTP or going through cPanel. If you go the cPanel route, click on File Manager in your cPanel. The find your website’s root folder. It is usually in the public_html folder. Then navigate to wp-content and locate the “plugins” folder. Next rename the Plugins folder to something different like “plugins-old”. This deactivates all the plugins on your site. If that fixes the problem, then you know the problem is with your plugins. Now that you know the problem is with your plugins you can go into the Wordpress back-end and activate each plugin individually to isolate the cause. You do this by activating one plugin, then reload your website. If you do not see the 500 Internal Server Error then it’s not that plugin. Then activate another plugin and do the same until one of them breaks your site. Once you know which plugin is causing the 500 Internal Server error, you can either delete that plugin, replace it, or contact the developer for more help. If deactivating the plugins didn’t fix the problem, keep on reading. Increase Your Memory Limit The next step in the troubleshooting process is to increase the memory limit on your website. Go cPanel and open the File Manager again. There may be a file in your website’s root called php.ini. If there is not just create a file with that name. Now, open the newly created file in the code editor and type memory=128MB in the file. This should increase your memory limit. Now refresh your website. If the error is gone, the cause was a memory problem on the server and you have identified the problem. You should now contact your host support to figure out what is draining your memory and remedy the problem with their help. Replace wp-admin and wp-include Files If increasing the memory limit did not clear up the error, then copy in a new “wp-admin” folder and “wp-includes” folder in your WordPress site. This can be done quite simply, but you want to follow the right process to protect yourself in case anything goes wrong. First, go to your root folder and compress each of the current “wp-admin” and “wp-includes” folders into a zip archive. Just in case something goes wrong you’ll have a backup of those files. Now go to wordpress.org and click on the “Download Wordpress” button. The downloaded zip file will contain the latest versions of “wp-admin” and “wp-includes”. Unzip that WordPress file. Find the “wp-admin” and “wp-includes” inside the WordPress folder on your harddrive. Highlight both of them and compress them. Upload them into the root folder of your website using cPanel or FTP. Now go ahead delete the uncompressed versions of these folders in your website root. Next, extract the compressed folders and now you have fresh copies of them on your website. Refresh your website to see if that fixes the problem. If it does fix the problem, you can safely delete the compressed backups. I hope this information helps you! Part 18 Load xml data into sql server table using sqlbulkcopy

11:58
In this video we will discuss 1. What is the use of SqlBulkCopy class 2. Loading xml data into sql server table using sqlbulkcopy What is the use of SqlBulkCopy class SqlBulkCopy class is used to bulk copy data from different data sources to SQL Server database. This class is present in System.Data.SqlClient namespace. This class can be used to write data only to SQL Server tables. However, the data source is not limited to SQL Server, any data source can be used, as long as the data can be loaded to a DataTable instance or read with a IDataReader instance. From a performance standpoint, SqlBulkCopy makes it very easy and efficient to copy large amounts of data. Loading xml data into sql server table using sqlbulkcopy The following are the steps to achieve this using SqlBulkCopy class Step 1 : Create the database tables using the following sql script Create table Departments ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Location nvarchar(50) ) GO Create table Employees ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), DepartmentId int foreign key references Departments(Id) ) GO Step 2 : Create a new empty asp.net web application project. Name it Demo. Step 3 : Add a new xml file to the project. Name it Data.xml. Copy and paste the following XML. 08 of 13 - Oracle APEX 5 - List of values (LOV) for a field in a form; display a hidden column

13:22
A new series using APEX 18.1 is now available. https://youtu.be/vgrkiIpJEiQ This is one in a series of videos about creating an application using Oracle APEX 5. In this video we create two lists of values (LOVs) in the Shared Components section of our application. We use each LOV in place of a field in a form. We see how APEX will help us write the SQL for a LOV. The difference between a "display value"and a "return value"is discussed. Finally, we display the primary key field in a form, which APEX hides by default. See the primary key field in a form can be helpful during application development. SQL scripts for this series are available to download at: http://db.kreie.net

2.Application Development Using Java Technologies Java EE vs Java SE

10:28
Java is a programming language. It was first developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems, which is now a part of Oracle Corporation. It was released in 1995 as a part of Sun Microsystems' Java platform. The language has developed much of its syntax from C and C++. Java applications are usually compiled to bytecode (class file) that can run on any Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Java is currently one of the most popular programming languages being used. It has about 10 million users. There are many types of Java programs: ================================== Java Applet - small program written in Java and that is downloaded from a website and executed within a web browser on a client computer. Application - executes on a client computer. If online, it has to be downloaded before being run. JAR file (Java ARchive) - used to package Java files together into a single file (almost exactly like a .zip file). Servlet - runs on a web server and helps to generate web pages. Swing application - used to build an application that has a GUI (windows, buttons, menus, etc.). EJB - runs on a web server and is used to develop large, complex websites. Java is commonly used to teach students how to program as a first language, yet is still also used by professionals. Java requires that each variable be initialized. Some older languages such as C, allow variables to go uninitialized, which can cause random failures with mysterious bugs. Java requires that each method that declares a return type, always return a value. This also prevents bugs. Java comes with a large set of classes and methods, the Java API that can be used without having to develop as much code "from scratch". Unlike C, Java primitive types, such as int, are always the same size in the number of bits which helps achieve cross-platform compatibility. Java used to be thought of as being slower than C, but that's less important in recent years with computers being faster. Java has exception-handling that requires a programmer to handle error-conditions such an Input/Output errors. Code compiled on one Java platform can be run on other platforms that support Java without modification of either the source-code nor the byte-code. For example, this means that a person can make a Java program for a Windows computer and have it run a Linux computer or a Mac computer. Java was developed to achieve 5 main goals. ===================================== It should be simple, object-oriented, distributed and easy to learn. It should be robust and secure. It should be independent of a given computer architecture or platform. It should be very performant. It should be possible to write an interpreter for the language. The language should also support parallelism and use dynamic typing. Java is object oriented. Unchanged C++ or C code will not work in Java, in most cases, though Java looks much like C and C++.Java can run on many different operating systems. This makes Java platform independent. Java does this by making the Java compiler turn code into Java bytecode instead of machine code. This means that when the program is executed, the Java Virtual Machine interprets the bytecode and translates it into machine code. The Java platform refers to a group of software products from Sun Microsystems. The platform is used to develop and run Java programs. The platform includes the execution engine (called a Java Virtual Machine) that allows Java programs to do the same thing on different computer systems. This capability of being able to develop software on one platform and running it on other platforms is called "cross-platform capability".

Hacking the Oracle Application Framework - OWASP AppSecUSA 2014

34:13
Recorded at AppSecUSA 2014 in Denver http://2014.appsecusa.org/ Friday, September 19 • 2:00pm - 2:45pm Hacking the Oracle Application Framework: A case study in deep-dive pen testing The Oracle Application Framework (OAF) is the base of dozens of Oracle’s web-based business applications (the eBusiness Suite) and is used by many other organizations to develop their own in-house applications. Last year, the speaker published a major vulnerability (CVE-2013-xxxx) in the framework that allowed inspect inspection of run-time data. Unpublished at the time, the vulnerability also allowed unauthenticated attackers to impersonate any user with an active session, including administrators. Why had such a critical vulnerability in a major application framework gone undiscovered for so long? The OAF has a huge install base in large companies, so it had undoubtedly been tested and scanned many times before. Attack complexity wasn’t a factor; once documented, the exploit was profoundly simple to use. In fact, while the functionality was poorly documented, the vulnerability was actually DESIGNED as part of OAF. So, again, why did it take so long to discover? The answer can be found by looking at how most application testing is performed. Traditional black-box testing is only capable of discovering vulnerabilities that sit on the surface of the user interface. A relatively simple application, such as a blog or online store, will have limited functionality beyond the obvious user interface. This is radically different in enterprise-scale applications that must support complex integration with other applications and platforms. Additionally, while superficial penetration testing of the user interface is sufficient to protect an application against casual attackers, a dedicated attacker will certainly dig deeper. This easier with off-the-shelf software (like OAF) that can be downloaded, evaluated, or pirated by attackers. To fully test a complex application, advanced techniques are required. Static reverse engineering, mock environment creation, and dynamic monitoring are all essential components in any comprehensive application test. Using the Oracle Application Framework as a case study, deep-dive techniques will be explained and demonstrated in this presentation. A live environment will be provided for attendees who want to hack along with the presentation and during the rest of the day. Speaker David Byrne Principal Consultant, SpiderLabs David Byrne has worked in information security for 14 years. Currently, he is a Managing Consultant in SpiderLabs, Trustwave’s advanced security team focused on application security, penetration testing, and incident response. David’s primary responsibility is setting SpiderLabs’ global standards for delivery of application security services. Before Trustwave, David was the Security Architect at Dish Network, one of the world’s largest satellite television companies. - Managed by the official OWASP Media Project https://www.owasp.org/index.php/OWASP_Media_Project
