Jun 2018 Migrants from Libya to Italy

05:09
June 2018. Italy’s collaboration with Libya to stop Migrants reaching Europe is facing a Legal Challenge over allegations that it has led to grave Human Rights Violations against those crossing the Mediterranean, including Torture and Slavery. A lawsuit filed in the European court of Human Rights (ECHR) alleges that Italy’s work with the Libyan coastguard, which has stopped migrant boats at Italy’s behest and forced Thousands of People to return to Libya against their will, has subjected them to Inhumane Conditions, Beatings, Rape and Starvation. There’s no Easy Answer on the Migrants Issue. The way I see it, they’re risking their Life for Something Better. Surely part of the Solution would be to make their Home Nation Something Better and a Reason Not to Leave. https://docterr.com/help

Italian ships scrambled to save a record 4,000 migrants, who crowded a ship to escape the tyranny of ISIS, and made the treacherous journey from Libya. Italy Is Paying Libya To Intercept Migrants On The Mediterranean (HBO)

09:22
In the first six months of 2017, the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy dropped by around half. This drastic fall in numbers was likely a result of the $236 million deal signed in February, in which Italy funds and trains the Libyan coastguards to divert migrants right back to Libya. While the Italian government sees this as reason for celebration, the brunt of the migration crisis is now firmly on Libya. This is a problem given that the UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord doesn't have the means to effectively handle migrant trafficking and relies on the country's 1,700 militias to do the job for them. By outsourcing this work to armed groups who themselves are implicated in smuggling, a bloody power struggle has erupted. Vice News Tonight was the first foreign media to reach Libya's migrant smuggling epicenter of Sabratha, and met the migrants caught up in the mayhem. Migrant arrivals in Italy fell by a third in 2017

01:39
Migrant arrivals to Italy by sea fell by a third in 2017 compared to a year earlier, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday, as Libyan authorities helped to slow departures during the second half of the year. More than 119,000 reached Italy by boat in 2017 after a record 181,000 made the crossing in 2016, the ministry said in a statement. Since July, arrivals have declined by more than two thirds versus a year earlier. In February, Italy signed an agreement with the United Nations-backed govern… READ MORE : http://www.africanews.com/2018/01/01/migrant-arrivals-in-italy-fell-by-a-third-in-2017 Africanews on YouTube brings you a daily dose of news, produced and realised in Africa, by and for Africans. Drowning for Freedom: Libya’s Migrant Jails (Part 1)

09:57
Watch Part 2, “Trapped and Forgotten” - http://bit.ly/1Cwjv9k Watch Part 3, “Escaping Hell” - http://bit.ly/1xCZ5nP As Libya descends further into civil war and lawlessness, migrants from Africa and the Middle East continue to journey to the country’s coast in search of smugglers to take them across the Mediterranean Sea and into Europe. Search and rescue operations by Libya’s coast guard are restricted due to diminishing resources, and have to contend with dangerous gangs of armed traffickers. Those rescued at sea by the coast guard are brought to detention centers, where they face deplorable conditions and are forced to remain for long periods of time. In some instances, migrants are detained by militias in unofficial prisons outside of government control. In part one of a three part series, VICE News is given access to chilling footage filmed by the Libyan coast guard, who have witnessed an influx of migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, recovering hundreds of bodies of those who’ve drowned on their journey to Europe. Close to 2,000 migrants were rescued by Italy's coast guard and other ships in a series of operations off the coast of Libya on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Wednesday, 658 migrants on two dinghies and a boat were picked up by the Italian coast guard and the Spanish Navy ship Navarra, which was in the area as part of the anti-trafficking Sophia operation. On Tuesday, 1,397 migrants were pulled to safety from unseaworthy vessels in 12 separate operations, during which 8 bodies were also recovered. The migrants were travelling on five dinghies, a large wooden boat and six smaller ones, and were rescued by the coast guard and as well as the Navarra and rescue vessels belonging to the NGOs Save the Children, Life Boat and MOAS. A woman in cardiac arrest was airlifted to hospital, as were two migrants in a severe state of hypothermia.

Migrant Boats Reported in Difficulty Off Libya

00:47
Italian coast guard officials said a Maltese cargo ship was heading to assist a migrant boat with around 100 people on board in difficulty off the coast of Libya on Friday. An Italian coast guard vessel was helping two other boats. More than 300 African migrants have already died attempting to reach Italy from North Africa this week, highlighting the chronic migrant problem in the Mediterranean following the closure of Italy's search-and-rescue operation last October. The coast guard said an improvement in weather conditions had allowed more migrant boats to set off from Libya, where the breakdown in law and order has allowed people-smugglers free rein. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/kU50_fUMlyU/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

(20 Aug 2016) Two hundred seventy-seven migrants and refugees were rescued from the Mediterranean, 17 miles (30,6 kilometres) north of Sabratah, Libya, by a Spanish non-governmental organisation on Saturday. At least one body was recovered during the rescue operation by Proactiva Open Arms. Six boats with more than 600 migrants and refugees fleeing Libya. The rescued were transferred to the Proactiva vessel Golfo Azzurro before it transferred them to Italian authorities. Libya Migrant Ship with 500 migrants capsizes near Sicily !

03:20
People rescued on Wednesday after a large ship overturned off Libya's coast with more than 500 migrants aboard, are expected to arrive to Porto Empedocle port in Sicily on Thursday. Italian naval crews arrived as the boat capsized and recovered seven bodies but saved hundreds of others who were thrown into the sea. The Italian navy said its Bettica patrol ship was responding to a migrant ship in distress when it flipped. A photo of the capsized boat taken by the navy showed migrants scrambling up the side of the overturned ship, perching precariously on the exposed side as they awaited rescue, with hundreds more floating in the sea. Crews tossed life jackets to those in the water and brought 500 to safety, the navy said in a statement. Rescue operations off Libya's coast have increased in recent weeks amid calm seas and warm weather - conditions that encourage Libyan-based smugglers to crowd hundreds of would-be refugees onto un-seaworthy boats for the trip to Europe.

Sarah Giles, a Doctors Without Borders doctor who helped deliver the baby, said it was "normal birth" in "really extraordinary circumstances." Parents Otas and Faith and older brothers Victory and Rollres were rescued from a rubber boat trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya a day previously. The baby's mother said she was panicking before the rescue that she would go into labour, and had been having contractions for three days. The Aquarius broght back 391 migrants brought back a total of 391 migrants including the baby. There were 292 males, 99 females and 154 minors - many of whom were unaccompanied. Libyan coast guard rescues 115 migrants from sea off the coast of Libya

02:20
(18 Jun 2018) The Libyan coast guard on Monday rescued 115 illegal migrants off the coast of Libya, who were stranded in the sea,128 kilometres (eight miles) north of the Abu Kammash area, 150 kilometers (93 miles) west of the capital Tripoli. Commander of coast guard vessel Captain Rami Al-Hadi said the coast guard rescued immigrants from different African countries, including two children, 22 women, from a rubber boat. He added that five bodies had been recovered near the dilapidated boat. According to Al-Hadi, after humanitarian and medical assistance being provided at Tripoli naval base, the migrants will be handed over to the immigration control. The issue of illegal immigration has been exacerbated since 2011, as smugglers take advantage of the chaos that prevails in Libya to transport tens of thousands of migrants each year towards Europe. Surviving One of the Deadliest Routes to Europe: Refugees at Sea

31:40
Desperate to escape conflict and poverty, thousands of migrants and refugees attempt the perilous journey to Europe each year, with many crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in rubber dinghies and wooden boats. In the wake of the decommissioning of Mare Nostrum, a search and rescue operation run by Italy, the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), launched their own vessel, named the Bourbon Argos, to find those stranded at sea and save those in trouble on one of the deadliest routes to Europe. On board the vessel, refugees and migrants are provided with medical aid, food, and shelter, then brought safely to Italian shores. Having survived life in Libya, ruthless treatment by smugglers, and horrific conditions aboard flimsy boats, once aboard the Bourbon Argos they face yet more uncertainty as they approach Europe. VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life. Spanish NGO vessel rescues more than 100 migrants off coast of Libya

02:32
(6 May 2018) A Spanish nonprofit dedicated to helping migrants at sea on Sunday rescued 105 migrants in the Mediterranean, north of Libya. Proactiva Open Arms found the migrants drifting at sea in a motor-less rubber boat. The migrants told an Associated Press photographer onboard who documented the rescue that human smugglers sailing in a separate boat removed their boat's engine half way through the dangerous Mediterranean crossing and left. Among those rescued were eight women and six children. Fifty-four migrants originated from Bangladesh, 19 from Morocco and 12 from Egypt. There were also migrants from Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Eritrea, Senegal, Libya and Ghana. Favorable weather appears to have sparked the surge in sea crossings. Each year, tens of thousands of migrants attempt to reach southern European countries by crossing the Mediterranean in smugglers' boats. Most of the vessels are unfit for open water, and thousands of migrants drown each year. The UN says 615 migrants have died crossing the Mediterranean so far this year. A total of 22,439 migrants have reached European shores, with 4,409 arriving in Spain, through the first four months of 2018. Spanish NGO rescues migrants in Mediterranean

01:46
(6 Apr 2017) A Spanish non-governmental organisation on Thursday rescued 230 migrants making the journey across the Mediterranean to Italy. Two boats - one rubber and one wooden - were rescued by Proactiva Open Arms about 56 miles (90 kilometres) north of Sabratha, Libya, a few hours after the engines broke down and left the migrants adrift at sea. Among the rescued were 10 women, one of them pregnant. The majority of the migrants were from Bangladesh, Cameroon, Eritrea, Pakistan and Togo. The Spanish rescue team onboard Golfo Azurro were taking the migrants to the Italian island of Sicily, where they were expected to arrive on Saturday morning. The Deadly Journey From Libya's Migrant Jails

03:00
VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these missions in the Mediterranean. In this extra scene, we speak with rescued refugees and migrants, where they describe the situation in Libya before embarking on one of the deadliest routes to Europe. Italy: At Least 10 Migrants Found Dead in Sea Off Libya

00:48
Italian Coast Guard and commercial vessels came to the rescue of at least 16 boats of migrants Sunday, saving hundreds of them and recovering 10 bodies off Libya's coast, as smugglers took advantage of calm seas to send packed vessels across the Mediterranean. The Italian Coast Guard said the bodies were found in three separate rescue operations off Libya's coast. The Coast Guard was being aided by a tug and a merchant ship in at least some of the rescue efforts. Sunday's drama at sea came a day after 3,690 migrants were saved from smugglers' boats. Most of those migrants were still being taken to southern Italian ports even as the fresh rescues were taking place. http://feeds.foxnews.com/~r/foxnews/world/~3/RIwNVS4geNU/ http://www.wochit.com

The coast guard said it coordinated 40 separate Mediterranean rescue operations on Thursday. One operation involved a motorized rubber dinghy where, authorities say, a woman's body was found. More details weren't immediately available. The high numbers are being attributed to a break in several days of bad weather and rough seas which had kept smugglers, largely based in Libya, from launching boats with migrants and asylum seekers, fleeing conflict and poverty for Europe's southern shores. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory. "They drove 115 of us to the coast in trucks. We slept there one night. The next day in the morning we left for Italy by boat." Like hundreds of thousands of others, Ibrahim put his life in the hands of organised smugglers. They were picked up by Libyan patrols. Now he is being held at one of many detention centres near Libya's coastline. The sheer numbers at these centres is evidence of the Libyan authorities' considerable efforts to control migration; but the strain on resources is apparent. "You have to feed them all. Sometimes you wonder: wouldn’t it be better to let them go to Europe," says General Abdelbaset Marwan of government taskforce Libya Dawn.
