Sophia Loren-Remembering "Marriage Italian Style"

03:29
The Italian film "Marriage Italian Style" (Matrimonio All'italiana) was released in December, 1964 and was an instant hit with critics and public alike. Based on the Italian play "Filumena Marturano", the movie became a perfect vehicle for the great acting team of Loren-Mastroinanni. Set in her native Naples, and directed by her favorite Director, Vittorio De Sica, costarring Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia gave a tour-de-force performance in the plum role of Filumena. The role is time spanning, requiring Sophia to play a woman from age 17 progressing to one in her 50's, and she did so formidably; going from comedy to drama effortlessly. The story is told via flashbacks, beginning and ending in the present. The film has been one of my enduring favorites and with this photo parade video set to the movie's theme song, I wanted to pay honor and tribute to the great Sophia Loren. Sophia went on to get her second Oscar nomination for this film, the film was also nominated for Best Foreign Film. Unfortunately, She lost the Oscar that year to Julie Andrews in "Mary Poppins". However she went on to get many International honors, she won a Golden Globe award, an Italian David Di Donatello Award (Italy's Oscar), The Moscow Film Festival Award, and a German Bambi Award.

Sophia Loren's Mirthless Laugh in Marriage Italian Style

00:36
In this scene in Marriage Italian Style (Matrimonio all'italiana) (1964) Filumena Marturano (Sophia Loren) has already tricked Domenico Soriano (Marcello Mastroianni) into marriage after being treated as a second rate mistress for long enough to teach him a lesson and gain the status she deserves for herself. She catches him discussing future plans on the phone with a girl, apparently his new fiancée, She "in-your-faces" him and laughs as she leaves the telephone room. I love the way she laughs that way. So Italian! Great movie.

My Darling Friends and Visitors, Since I love Marcello Mastroiani, I present another video with Marcello and Sophia Loren, they had such great chemistry. Marriage Italian Style (Italian: Matrimonio all'italiana [matriˈmɔːnjo allitaˈljaːna]) is a 1964 film by Vittorio De Sica. It tells the World War II era story of a cynical, successful businessman named Domenico (Mastroianni), who, after meeting a naive country girl, Filumena (Loren), one night in a Neapolitan brothel, keeps frequenting her for years in an on-off relationship (as she continues working as a prostitute). He eventually takes her in his house as a semi-official mistress under the pretense that she take care of his ailing, senile mother. After having fallen for a younger, prettier girl and having planned to marry her, he finds himself cornered when Filumena feigns illness and "on her deathbed", asks to be married to him. Thinking she'll be dead in a matter of hours and that the 'marriage' won't even be registered, he agrees. After having been proclaimed his legal bride, the shrewd and resourceful Filumena drops the charade and reveals to have put up the show for the one child she bore from him (she gave birth to three sons but Domenico only maintained to have fathered one). Domenico tries to cajole her into telling him which one is his but she stalwartly refuses, telling him that sons can't be picked and chosen and that he has to be the father of all three. It stars Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni and Vito Moricone.[2] One of the film's most memorable moments is when Domenico is on the phone with his new flame, shortly after having married the "moribund" Filumena. As he reassures his fiancée that death is near, a wild-eyed and vengeful Filumena emerges from a curtain behind him and exclaims in Neapolitan that she is in fact alive and well—the Madonna having taken pity on her. The film was adapted by Leonardo Benvenuti, Renato Castellani, Piero De Bernardi and Tonino Guerra from the play Filumena Marturano by Eduardo De Filippo. It was directed by Vittorio De Sica. Music is Tango Dell'Odo with the DIVINE Danielle Serra ~1932

Back when movies were made for adults, there was no better, no more handsome, a screen couple than Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. Watch any of their films (they made twelve together in all!) and you are instantly transported to an era of class and dignity. They were twice nominated for Oscars for films they starred in together; she for "Marriage, Italian Style" and he for "A Special Day." The music is "Always" by Lara Fabian.

Sophia loren's love affair with cary grant, lasting marriage to husband carlo ponti explored in new book When Italian film star Sophia Loren arrived to America, she easily managed to impress two men Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant. The trio appeared in 1957’s action drama “The Pride and the Passion,” which would lead to a reallife affair offscreen between costars Loren and Grant. “Frank Sinatra was very friendly. They became friends and treated her well on the set,” Cindy De La Hoz, Senior Editor of Running Press, told Fox News. “And Cary Grant fell head over heels in love.” Loren, now 83, is the subject of a new coffee table book written by the film historian in partnership with Turner Classic Movies, titled “Sophia Loren Movie Star Italian Style.” The network provided Loren’s son, Italian film director Edoardo Ponti, a copy of the book, which received his blessing. Loren herself has seen it. While the book investigates Loren’s film career, which has span over six decades, it also explores what really occurred behind the scenes while creating some of her most iconic movies. Sophia Loren Over The Years

05:24
Sofia Costanza Brigida Villani Scicolone (born 20 September 1934) is an Italian film actress and singer. Encouraged to enroll in acting lessons after entering a beauty pageant, Loren began her film career in 1950 at age 15. She appeared in several bit parts and minor roles in the early part of the decade, until her five-picture contract with Paramount in 1956 launched her international career. Notable film appearances around this time include The Pride and the Passion, Houseboat, and It Started in Naples. Her talents as an actress were not recognized until her performance as Cesira in Vittorio De Sica's Two Women; Loren's performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1962 and made her the first actress to win an Oscar for a foreign-language performance. She holds the record for having earned six David di Donatello Awards for Best Actress: Two Women; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; Marriage Italian Style (for which she was nominated for a second Oscar); Sunflower; The Voyage; and A Special Day. After starting a family in the early 1970s, Loren chose to make only occasional film appearances. In later years, she has appeared in American films such as Grumpier Old Men (1995) and Nine (2009). Aside from the Academy Award, she has won a Grammy Award, five special Golden Globes, a BAFTA Award, a Laurel Award, the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival, the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival, and the Honorary Academy Award in 1991. In 1999, Loren was acknowledged as No. 21 of the top 25 female American screen legends in the American Film Institute's survey and she is currently the only living actress on the list. Fandor Italian Style: Vittorio De Sica

04:01
As a director, Vittorio De Sica communicated life’s small victories and defeats. His post-war Italian Neorealist classics, like Bicycle Thieves (1948) and Umberto D. (1952), inspired new waves of independent filmmakers, and proved, along with his contemporaries, that non-professional actors, non-studio settings, and relatable narratives can be equally, if not more, impactful than typical mainstream productions. But De Sica’s creative interests extended far beyond the Neorealist movement. In fact, he was already a popular actor before embarking on his directing career, and his performative playfulness shines through in later collaborations with Italian superstars Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. This video examines two of De Sica’s classic comedies: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) and Marriage Italian Style (1964), along with a moving war drama, Sunflower (1970), which features similar conceptual themes. It might just be time for a proper De Sica binge. National Arts Awards 2015: Sophia Loren

03:35
Carolyn Clark Powers Lifetime Achievement Award In 1991 Sophia Loren received an Honorary Academy Award for her body of work and was declared “one of world cinema’s greatest treasures.” Born in Rome, Italy, she grew up in the struggling city of Pozzuoli during World War II. Her life took an unexpected turn when as a teenager, she entered a beauty contest and caught the attention of film producer Carlo Ponti, whom she later married and under whose guidance she appeared as an extra in 10 films beginning in 1950, before working her way up to supporting roles. By her late teens, she was playing lead roles in many Italian features. In 1957, she embarked on a successful acting career in the U.S., starring in such films as Legend of the Lost with John Wayne and The Pride and the Passion with Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra. For the next three years she also starred in Desire Under the Elms with Anthony Perkins, The Key with William Holden, The Black Orchid with Anthony Quinn, It Started in Naples with Clark Gable, A Breath of Scandal with Maurice Chevalier and John Gavin, and The Millionairess with Peter Sellers before returning to Italy to star in Two Women. For this Vittorio De Sica film, Ms. Loren created a powerful portrayal of a mother living in war-torn Italy who is raped while unsuccessfully trying to protect her young daughter, who is also assaulted. Originally cast in the role of the daughter, Ms. Loren fought against type and was re-cast as the mother, receiving international acclaim and the Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the first artist to receive an Oscar for a foreign-language performance. She continued as an international star throughout the sixties and seventies, making films on both sides of the Atlantic. Her American films included El Cid, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Arabesque, and Man of La Mancha, and the Italian films Marriage Italian Style and A Special Day, both with Marcello Mastroianni, her frequent co-star. During these years she received a second Oscar nomination and won five Golden Globe Awards. In the 1980s, Ms. Loren limited her filming schedule in order to spend more time with her husband and two sons, appearing occasionally in television films, and becoming the first actress to launch her own fragrance and eye wear line. She returned to the big screen in Robert Altman’s Ready to Wear in 1994 and followed it up with the hit comedy Grumpier Old Men with Walter Matthau. Over the next decade she took plum roles in a few non-mainstream arthouse films, and in 2009, she appeared in the musical Nine opposite Daniel Day-Lewis and directed by Rob Marshall. In addition to her work as an actress, Ms. Loren was named a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador In 1992. Moved by a widely publicized image of a Somali child, “a living skeleton, with enormous eyes, tragically attempting a smile,” she said, “was the moment I decided that I must do something.” “I know it is a human, instinctive reaction to remove from us anything that can disturb our eyes.” Ms. Loren said. “But I firmly say: NO! We must feel disturbed, we must feel shaken and ask ourselves which way we can be involved and help.” With a career that has already spanned six decades and been honored with some 50 awards, Sophia Loren remains one of the most beloved and recognizable figures in the international film world and humanitarian community

Sophia Loren - A Photo Parade Tribute

02:10
For over half a century Sophia Loren has enchanted us with her unique beauty and amazing talent. It is impossible to do justice to a career as rich or as long as hers in this short video; however, it does feature highlights from her earliest images to the Sophia of today, who defies time, and still in her 70's can take your breath away with great style and beauty. Winner of 2 Oscars, 4 Golden Globes, and countless major awards around the world; Sophia proved long ago that she was more than just a pretty face, giving us critically acclaimed and memorable, heart wrenching performances in movies like "Two Women", "Marriage Italian Style", "Sunflower", "Man of La Mancha",and "A Special Day", and made us laugh with wonderful comedic performances in "Houseboat", "It Started In Naples","The Millionairess" and "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow". Plus her beauty and talent combined to dazzle us in major international movie productions such as "El Cid", "The Fall of The Roman Empire", "Arabesque", "Lady L", "A Countess From Hong Kong" and "More Than A Miracle". I chose the instrumental theme from the latter for this little video, because it is an irresistibly romantic piece that magically frames the eternal images of the legend that is Sophia Loren. Let's celebrate Sophia!

Hollywood 1934 Actress and international sex symbol Sophia Loren born Share this: facebook twitter google+ PRINT CITE On this day in 1934, Sofia Villani Scicolone, later known to the world as the actress and screen siren Sophia Loren, is born in Rome, Italy. Loren, who was raised in poverty in Naples, rose to become Italy’s most famous film star and an international icon of beauty and glamour. As a teenager, Sofia began entering beauty contests, and she eventually caught the attention of the Italian movie producer Carlo Ponti (1912-2007). In the early 1950s, Ponti (who later produced Federico Fellini’s 1954 La Strada and 1965’s Doctor Zhivago), started using her for small roles and by the mid-1950s, the dark-haired beauty (now known as Sophia Loren) was a star in Italy. She earned international notice in the 1957 English-language films Boy on a Dolphin, co-starring Alan Ladd, and The Pride and the Passion, co-starring Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant and directed by Stanley Kramer (The Defiant Ones, Judgment at Nuremberg, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner). In 1957, Loren married the divorced Ponti by proxy in Mexico, which caused a scandal in Italy, a heavily Catholic country where divorce was illegal. Loren continued to make movies in Italy and America, co-starring with a long list of Hollywood’s top leading men. She appeared with Clark Gable in 1960’s It Started in Naples, Peter Sellars in 1960’s The Millionairess and Charlton Heston in 1961’s El Cid. In 1962, Loren won a Best Actress Academy Award for her role as a widowed mother trapped in a love triangle with her teenage daughter in the Italian film Two Women (released in the United States in 1961). Her Oscar win made her the first actress ever to win that honor for a foreign-language film. She was nominated for a second Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Matrimonio all’Italia, or Marriage Italian Style, which co-starred Marcello Mastroianni. Released in the United States in 1964, Marriage Italian Style was also nominated in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Among Loren’s other film credits in the 1960s were Lady L (1965) with Paul Newman, Arabesque (1966) with Gregory Peck and A Countess from Hong Kong (1967), co-starring Marlon Brando and helmed by Charlie Chaplin in his final time in the director’s chair. After giving birth to her two sons, Loren stepped back from the spotlight and began acting less frequently. In 1994, she appeared in Robert Altman’s Pret-a-Porter, and in 1995 she was featured in Grumpier Old Men alongside Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon and Ann-Margret. In 2002, Loren starred in Between Strangers, directed by her younger son, Edoardo Ponti.

Sophia Loren - Images From The 1960's

04:53
Sophia Loren is still a magnificent beauty and actress, she will soon be starring in a new major motion picture production- Rob Marshall's musical "Nine", at age 74, no less! However, after formidably debuting in the 1950's, she reached her prime during the 1960's- It was her crowning decade. With this video I've humbly attempted to capture and document some of her most wonderful images, underlining her unique beauty and acting talent. A decade that began with the lovely Hollywood film "A Breath Of Scandal" playing a princess, a hilarious millionairess in the The Millionairess, and the heartwarming cabaret singer and aunt in "It Started In Naples"; moving on to her great Oscar winning role in "Two Women" in 1961, then through the mid 60's with great Italian films- "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" and "Marriage Italian Style". The latter again garnering her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She then went on to make major international productions such as "The Fall Of The Roman Empire", "Operation Crossbow", "Judith", "Lady L", Arabesque", and "A Countess From Hong Kong". Crowning the end of the decade with the marvelous romantic fantasy "More Than A Miracle" and the funny "Ghosts Italian Style". But her greatest achievement by far was to be a mother, and after numerous miscarriages and untold efforts she managed to give birth to Carlo Jr. in late 1969. I discovered Sophia for the first time as a child in 1961 when I saw her in "El Cid". She made a great impression then, but it would be the movie "Arabesque" that would make me a devoted fan for life. Her elegant and sexy entrance into Gregory Peck's room in that negligee was IT...I then went on to see almost all her movies whether at the movies or on TV, video tape or DVD and to me there is no greater beauty or actress than Sophia Loren. I hope you enjoy these images set to the sweet little song, "Zoo Be Zoo Be Zoo" sung with style and innocence by Miss Loren herself and recorded in 1960 at the start of what would be a magical decade for her. Please take the time to watch this video and comment/rate it. Thank you kindly.:o)
