except vs not in sql server difference between not in and except in sql server In this video we will discuss the difference between EXCEPT and NOT IN operators in SQL Server. The following query returns the rows from the left query that aren’t in the right query’s results. Select Id, Name, Gender From TableA Except Select Id, Name, Gender From TableB The same result can also be achieved using NOT IN operator. Select Id, Name, Gender From TableA Where Id NOT IN (Select Id from TableB) So, what is the difference between EXCEPT and NOT IN operators 1. Except filters duplicates and returns only DISTINCT rows from the left query that aren’t in the right query’s results, where as NOT IN does not filter the duplicates. Insert the following row into TableA Insert into TableA values (1, 'Mark', 'Male') Now execute the following EXCEPT query. Notice that we get only the DISTINCT rows Select Id, Name, Gender From TableA Except Select Id, Name, Gender From TableB Now execute the following query. Notice that the duplicate rows are not filtered. Select Id, Name, Gender From TableA Where Id NOT IN (Select Id from TableB) 2. EXCEPT operator expects the same number of columns in both the queries, where as NOT IN, compares a single column from the outer query with a single column from the subquery. In the following example, the number of columns are different. Select Id, Name, Gender From TableA Except Select Id, Gender From TableB The above query would produce the following error. Msg 205, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 All queries combined using a UNION, INTERSECT or EXCEPT operator must have an equal number of expressions in their target lists. NOT IN, compares a single column from the outer query with a single column from subquery. In the following example, the subquery returns multiple columns Select * from TableA where Id NOT IN (Select Id, Name from TableB) Msg 116, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 Only one expression can be specified in the select list when the subquery is not introduced with EXISTS. For example, on my machine I have 400,000 records in tblProducts table 600,000 records in tblProductSales tables The following query, returns, the list of products that we have sold atleast once. This query is formed using sub-queries. When I execute this query I get 306,199 rows in 6 seconds Select Id, Name, Description from tblProducts where ID IN ( Select ProductId from tblProductSales ) At this stage please clean the query and execution plan cache using the following T-SQL command. CHECKPOINT; GO DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS; Go DBCC FREEPROCCACHE; GO Now, run the query that is formed using joins. Notice that I get the exact same 306,199 rows in 6 seconds. Select distinct tblProducts.Id, Name, Description from tblProducts inner join tblProductSales on tblProducts.Id = tblProductSales.ProductId Please Note: I have used automated sql script to insert huge amounts of this random data. Please watch Part 61 of SQL Server tutorial, in which we have discussed about this automated script. According to MSDN, in some cases where existence must be checked, a join produces better performance. Otherwise, the nested query must be processed for each result of the outer query. In such cases, a join approach would yield better results. The following query returns the products that we have not sold atleast once. This query is formed using sub-queries. When I execute this query I get 93,801 rows in 3 seconds Select Id, Name, [Description] from tblProducts where Not Exists(Select * from tblProductSales where ProductId = tblProducts.Id) When I execute the below equivalent query, that uses joins, I get the exact same 93,801 rows in 3 seconds. Select tblProducts.Id, Name, [Description] from tblProducts left join tblProductSales on tblProducts.Id = tblProductSales.ProductId where tblProductSales.ProductId IS NULL In general joins work faster than sub-queries, but in reality it all depends on the execution plan that is generated by SQL Server. It does not matter how we have written the query, SQL Server will always transform it on an execution plan. If sql server generates the same plan from both queries, we will get the same result. I would say, rather than going by theory, turn on client statistics and execution plan to see the performance of each option, and then make a decision. In a later video session we will discuss about client statistics and execution plans in detail.

Оператор EXISTS переводится на русский язык как "существует". Когда мы работали с объектами базы данных, то очень часто использовали конструкции: IF EXISTS и IF NOT EXISTS. Когда оператор EXISTS используется вместе с SQL командой SELECT, то выполняется "проверка на существование" и СУБД определяет: выводить результаты нам на экран или нет. Вообще, подзапросы в SQL можно использовать с любыми операторами и даже использовать подзапрос вместо имени таблицы или имени столбца, так как SELECT всегда нам в качестве результата возвращает таблицу. If yes, then you would know that it would raise an error, as DDL statements are not allowed inside a PL/SQL Block. So the solution to such a case, where you want to generate tables, or sequences or want to execute any DDL statement on the fly, then use synamic sql. Dynamic SQL statment will allow you to create state statements on the fly and then you can execute them using the execute immediate statement. This video tutorial demonstrates on this topic of using synamic sql with execute immediate in a PL/SQL block.

This means a given student can be enrolled into many courses and a given course can have many students enrolled. Below is the question asked in an interview for SQL Server Developer role. Write a SQL script to insert data into StudentCourses table. Here are the rules that your script should follow. 1. There will be 2 inputs for the script Student Name - The name of the student who wants to enroll into a course Course Name - The name of the course the student wants to enroll into 2. If the student is already in the Students table, then use that existing Student Id. If the student is not already in the Students table, then a row for that student must be inserted into the Students table, and use that new student id. 3. Along the same lines, if the course is already in the Courses table, then use that existing Course Id. If the course is not already in the Courses table, then a row for that course must be inserted into the Courses table, and use that new course id. 4. There should be no duplicate student course enrollments, i.e a given student must not be enrolled in the same course twice. For example, Tom must not be enrolled in C# course twice. Answer : To avoid duplicate student course enrollments create a composite primary key on StudentId and CourseId columns in StudentCourses table. With this composite primary key in place, if someone tries to enroll the same student in the same course again we get violation of primary key constraint error. I can remove them using rowid functionality using one subquery. You can give different column names in GROUP BY clause. to identify the duplicate record. You can give just primary key values also. The goal of this video is to take the CREATE TABLE statement we have and walk through the different ways to create primary keys. This and foreign keys are the most common constraints, so we need to make sure that you have this one down. Once we have a more complex database design with multiple tables, we will learn the proper way to create foreign keys. For now, I am going to keep all of our constraints at the column level, unnamed. The only exception is the primary key, because that is what we are focusing on in this video. The first way to create the primary key is at the column level, unnamed. The primary key is very important because it what we use to distinguish rows from one another. Every table you create is going to need a primary key, and I suggest putting a lot of effort into making sure your keys are set up correctly and organized. --Delete the table if needed: DROP TABLE users; CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER PRIMARY KEY, username VARCHAR2(50 CHAR) NOT NULL UNIQUE ) The next way is at the column level, but named: --Delete the table: DROP TABLE users; CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER CONSTRAINT users_pk PRIMARY KEY, username VARCHAR2(50 CHAR)NOT NULL UNIQUE ) The general naming convention here is the table name followed by an underscore, followed by pk for primary key. Finally, the third way, which is at the table level, is the way we are going to create our primary key: --Delete the table: DROP TABLE users; CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER, username VARCHAR2(50 CHAR) NOT NULL UNIQUE, CONSTRAINT users_pk PRIMARY KEY (user_id) ) Now, once you've created these constraints, you can use Oracle SQL Developer to find these constraints. Open your databases in the connections tab and find the table in the Tables folder. Double click your table and travel to the Constraints tab. You can tell here that the UNIQUE constraint still exists in this table, but it has a pretty disgusting name. It kind of wants to make me puke. Referencing that constraint in the future with that wacky name would be a burden. Engrave these three options in your head so that you can use any of them whenever you need and can read other peoples' code. Thank you for sticking with the series thus far. Difference between intersect and inner join Intersect operator retrieves the common records from both the left and the right query of the Intersect operator. Introduced in SQL Server 2005 The number and the order of the columns must be same in both the queries The data types must be same or at least compatible Let us understand INTERSECT operator with an example. The following query retrieves the common records from both the left and the right query of the Intersect operator. Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB We can also achieve the same thinkg using INNER join. The following INNER join query would produce the exact same result. Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id What is the difference between INTERSECT and INNER JOIN 1. INTERSECT filters duplicates and returns only DISTINCT rows that are common between the LEFT and Right Query, where as INNER JOIN does not filter the duplicates. To understand this difference, insert the following row into TableA Insert into TableA values (2, 'Mary', 'Female') Now execute the following INTERSECT query. Notice that we get only the DISTINCT rows Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB Now execute the following INNER JOIN query. Notice that the duplicate rows are not filtered. Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id You can make the INNER JOIN behave like INTERSECT operator by using the DISTINCT operator Select DISTINCT TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id 2. INNER JOIN treats two NULLS as two different values. So if you are joining two tables based on a nullable column and if both tables have NULLs in that joining column then, INNER JOIN will not include those rows in the result-set, where as INTERSECT treats two NULLs as a same value and it returns all matching rows. Oracle SQL Tutorial 22 - Why Primary Keys Shouldn't Change

In the last video I mentioned that with our database design it is important to make sure that nobody tries to update a user's username. What happens if they do? Nothing horrible, Oracle will just throw an error. That's not such a big deal, but if you are hoping to make some kind of application that allows someone to change their username, this is not the best set up. Why? If you look at the projects table, we have a foreign key that references the username. Let's assume for a moment that Oracle allows you to do anything with your data. That means that if a user updates their username, there will be projects created by users that don't exist. Or a user could change their name to the previous owner. To fix this problem, we would need something such as an ON UPDATE CASCADE command for our foreign key. That would mean that if the user updated their username, the columns that reference that username would also update to the new value. This exists in some database management systems, but this does not exist in Oracle at the time of this video. How do we get around this problem? I'm sure we could conjure up something to allow us to update the username, but the easiest solution is to reference the user_id instead of the username. That way, when the username is updated, nothing changes inside of the foreign key. As a general rule, primary keys should never change. Foreign keys CAN change, but they should not change because a primary key changed. So, if we did happen to use a username as a column, it would be frowned upon if the username had to change because the column it references changes. However, it would be acceptable to change the foreign key if we needed to point to a new entity in the users table. Even if a username is never intended to change, these complications bother a lot of people. You can mitigate these problems by only referencing surrogate keys in foreign keys. This has the downside though that when you retrieve the data, you are going to have to do more work to make the data readable. For example, we had a table that was called project_users. It is essentially a table that says what users are part of what projects. We could have the foreign keys reference the project's name and the user's username. Then when you could say SELECT * FROM project_users. The data would be completely readable without doing anything. If you switch to only referencing surrogate primary keys, you will have a bunch of random numbers that don't mean anything and will have to be joined with other tables…which is really super frustrating when later you have to join a thousand tables to read anything. Which side do you prefer? Pick a side. Choose wisely.
