Holyrood Palace is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Located at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Holyrood Palace has served as the principal residence of the Kings and Queens of Scots since the 16th century, and is a setting for state occasions and official entertaining. Queen Elizabeth spends one week in residence at Holyrood Palace at the beginning of each summer, where she carries out a range of official engagements and ceremonies. The 16th century Historic Apartments of Mary, Queen of Scots and the State Apartments, used for official and state entertaining are open to the public throughout the year, except when members of the Royal Family are in residence. The 4-hectare Palace gardens are encircled by the Queen's park and set against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. The area around the north wall of Holyrood Abbey was the site of the Palace menagerie, a common feature at European courts. Tigers (in the reign of James 1V), lynx, bears, gamecocks, an ape (given to James V in 1535) and a camel (in the reign of James V1) were housed here. A lion yard and stone lion house were built in 1512. By the time Mary, Queen of Scots was resident at the Palace, there was a series of enclosed gardens, including a walled Privy Garden to the north, and areas for cultivation and recreation. Mary practiced archery hawking, hunting (for which wild boars were brought from France), bowls and tennis in the garden. A young sycamore that she brought with her from France was planted by the Abbey cloister. It grew here until 1819, when it was blown down and its wood made into trinkets. A Scottish sycamore grows in this part of the garden today.

Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia is the former royal yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, in service from 1954 to 1997. She was the 83rd such vessel since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. She is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the famous racing cutter built for The Prince of Wales in 1893. She is now a five-star visitor attraction and evening events venue permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2014, The Royal Yacht Britannia was named the UK's no. 1 landmark by TripAdvisor. There was some controversy over the siting of the ship, with some arguing that she would be better moored on the Clyde, where she was built, than in Edinburgh, with which the yacht had few links. However, her positioning in Leith coincided with a redevelopment of the harbour area, and the advent of Scottish devolution. The Queen was reported to have wept at the decommissioning ceremony, which she attended along with most of the senior members of the Royal Family. Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Britannia is now permanently moored as a five-star visitor attraction in the historic Port of Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, and is cared for by the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, a registered Scottish charity. Entrance to the yacht is via the Ocean Terminal development, and over 300,000 people visit the Royal Yacht Britannia every year. She is also one of the UK's top evening events venues. On 18 May 2006, the Swiss-born Hollywood actress and first Bond girl, Ursula Andress, celebrated her 70th birthday on board the Royal Yacht. On 29 July 2011, a drinks reception was held on board Britannia for Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter Zara Phillips and her husband Mike Tindall to celebrate their upcoming wedding. A retired Rolls-Royce Phantom V state car, owned by the royal family in the 1960s, is on display in the purpose-built garage aboard Britannia. Other highlights of the tour of the five decks that are open to the public include the Queen's Bedroom, the only bedroom of a living monarchy which can be viewed (behind a glass wall), and the State Dining and Drawing Rooms, which hosted grand receptions for kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers throughout the world. The Royal Deck Tea Room was added in 2009. The 1936 racing yacht Bloodhound, once owned by the Queen, is now berthed alongside Britannia. Bloodhound was one of the most successful ocean-racing yachts ever built and was also the yacht on which both the Prince of Wales and Princess Royal learned to sail. The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust bought Bloodhound in early 2010 and she is the centrepiece of an exhibition focusing on the Royal Family's passion for sailing. Visitors can view Bloodhound from a specially built pontoon when the racing yacht is in port. During the summer, July and August, she is berthed in Oban Marina and is available for private charter, as she sails around the islands, once visited by the royal family during their annual two-week holiday in the Western Isles of Scotland. During this period, Royal Yachtsmen (Yotties) from Britannia's original crew sail the yacht for the Britannia Trust.

St Cuthbert's dates back to roughly the year 800 and is thought to be the oldest graveyard in Edinburgh. The church itself has obviously been rebuilt a few times since then, usually as a result of battles and wars, but christian worship has been practiced continuously on the site for over one thousand three hundred years. Like several other old cemeteries in old Edinburgh, St Cuthberts had a lot of trouble with graverobbers up until the mid 1800's, which led to a watch tower being built to guard the cemetery after dark, and that watchtower is still there today. So St Cuthbert's is certainly a historic cemetery in a very nice setting, with Edinburgh Castle looming over it on the other side of Princes St Gdns. If you like old headstones, mausoleums, tombs and graves, you'll find plenty here in Edinburgh old town. There's lovely church archictecture at St Cuthbert's and i almost leapt out of my skin when the church bells suddenly started chiming. They were much louder than they sound in the video as i had to turn the volume down. Latest Hollywood Gossip, News & Celeb Pics Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might spend Valentine's Day in Scotland Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could very well find themselves exchanging lovey-dovey eyes over a plate of haggis this Valentine's Day. On Wednesday, Kensington Palace announced the couple, who will marry at Windsor Castle in May, are set to visit Edinburgh on 13 February. They will make several public appearances during their time in the Scottish capital, including a reception celebrating youth achievement, and engagements at the iconic Edinburgh Castle.' The palace didn't say whether the pair would remain in Scotland for Valentine's Day, but there are plenty of reasons why they should. For one thing, fans of the TV show Outlander can testify the country's magnificent landscape - particularly the luscious green Highlands - makes the perfect setting for a couple's getaway. Think: horse riding, hiking, nights snuggled up by a fire... Prince Harry, 33, could also swing some free accommodation in Balmoral Castle, the royal residence favoured by his grandmother Queen Elizabeth when she's on holiday. Plus, if there's a more romantic meal than square sausage or haggis washed down with Irn Bru, we're yet to encounter it. (Ahem.) Regardless of where and how they spend February 14, one thing is for sure: the day has a special place in bride-to-be Meghan's heart. Writing on her now-defunct lifestyle website The Tig, the Suits star confessed to being "a sucker for Valentine's Day". “Without fail, every February 14th, I wake up feeling like I’m immersed in a Robert Doisneau photo, waiting with bated breath to be dipped into a kiss," she told her followers. "This is all happening in black and white, of course. And in Paris, if I had my way."

Latest Hollywood Gossip, News & Celeb Pics Meghan Markle reveals surprising hidden talent in Edinburgh Meghan Markle's charm and warmth has won over crowds as she tours the country with fiancé Prince Harry ahead of their royal wedding in May. And during the couple's recent visit to Edinburgh, the American actress seriously impressed onlookers as she spoke with a couple from the Philippines, who were celebrating their anniversary. After congratulating the excited pair, Meghan used the Filipino phrase 'salamat po', which means 'thank you' in Tagalog. The delighted lady can then be heard on camera exclaiming, "Oh my goodness, so sweet!" as Meghan moves on to speak to the next group of people. Meghan and Harry received a very warm welcome in Edinburgh – their first official visit to Scotland. Meghan, 36, braved the cold conditions in a patriotic tartan coat by Burberry, which she teamed with black trousers, a black roll neck jumper and a green bag by Strathberry. Already establishing herself as a new style icon, she broke from tradition by wearing her bag across her body – something no other royal has done before. During their walkabout in Edinburgh, Harry and Meghan spoke about their upcoming wedding plans to wellwishers Tom Martin, 30, and Francesca Short, 27, from London. Tom later revealed: "We asked them what they were doing for their stag and hen dos. Meghan said, 'I'm not sure – it's sorted but it will be fun.' Harry said he didn't know." Francesca added: "They seem really nice, happy and relaxed. She seemed to take it all in her stride." Tom noted: "She was introducing herself with 'Hi, I'm Meghan' as if no-one knew who she was." The pair were standing next to Josefine Hess, 28, an au pair from Germany. "Harry said I was very clever for wearing a [bright] pink jacket. They were very confident together," she said.
