It was set for contralto and orchestra, though a distinct version for piano was often performed by Elgar. Many mezzo-sopranos have sung the piece. Much of the vocal line of the first song, "Sea Slumber Song," is heard again in other parts of the cycle; most notably, the second stanza is heard again almost in its entirety as part of the finale. Elgar composed the piece on his 1844 Broadwood Square piano while residing at Birchwood Lodge, Great Storridge in Herefordshire. The songs were originally written in high keys for a soprano voice, but transposed to lower keys for the orchestral version, largely at the request of the contralto Clara Butt. The songs were composed in July 1899 (apart from "In Haven (Capri)", which was a reworking of his 1897 "Love alone will stay"). The premiere was on 5 October 1899 at the Norfolk and Norwich Festival with Elgar himself conducting and Clara Butt singing, dressed as a mermaid. On 7 October, Clara Butt gave the first London performance at St. James's Hall, with Elgar at the piano. Nearly two weeks later, on 20 October, Butt performed it for Queen Victoria at Balmoral. Until August 1900, Elgar's songs had been published by Novello: but Elgar had a disagreement with them, and from then his songs, including "The Pipes of Pan" and Sea Pictures were published by Boosey & Hawkes, who bought the copyright for £50, with a small royalty per copy of the songs published separately. Sea Pictures was published in the following languages: German: See-Bilder with words by Dr. Wilhelm Henzen French: Marines with words by George Petilleau. Sea Pictures - Elgar - Janet Baker

23:53
Sea Pictures Op.37 - Edward Elgar - Janet Baker Elgar (1857-1934) - Sea Pictures Programme notes by © Paul Serotsky: Hovering on the threshold of the Twentieth Century, the Sea Pictures were premiered in October 1899 by the legendary Clara Butt. Elgar's mastery of the Oratorio did not extend into the relatively intimate form of song. The fifty or so he wrote for voice and piano generally resulted from something more mundane than artistic imperative: it was, at the time, the “done thing”. And it was a “nice little earner”. Nevertheless, we can expect, and indeed do find, that this peerless oratorio composer brought to his songs the same sensitivity to textual implications and that, while his piano accompaniments were at best workmanlike, his use of orchestral resources in the Sea Pictures is well up with his considerable best. Even in 1899, the sea still largely represented the “Great Unknown”, navigable only in frail ships. Elgar's chosen texts often relate to the dichotomy of fear and fascination. Sometimes, when the singer represents humanity, as observer or participant, the orchestra will reflect the dispassionate deep, neither friend nor foe but something of both, almost synonymous with the “Hand of God”. It should go without saying that the following are my personal impressions only - yours may be very different! The five songs fall into a pattern: while the first apparently takes the sea's “viewpoint”, the second and fourth, and third and fifth form two pairs of opposing human sentiments. 1. Sea Slumber Song: The “Sea-Mother” lulls her fractious “child” to sleep, to an accompaniment kept appropriately light, gently rocking save for the second and last verses where deep, throbbing waves are suggested. 2. In Haven: To a feathery accompaniment, the voice sings of the transcendence of Love over blind elemental forces, Elgar's wife's tiny poem hinting that “together, we can face anything”. Elgar's articulation of the asymmetrical verse endings is miraculous. 3. Sabbath Morning at Sea: At the cycle's centre, we confront the Grand Mystery. Aboard a lonely vessel, the voice submissively contemplates first the contrast of untroubled sky and turbulent surface, then God, who created both Sea and Man. Elgar provides a suitably solemn treatment, with sombre treading and aspiring “nobilmente”. 4. Where Corals Lie: The singer is seduced away from mortal love by the pervasive lure of the sea (the “land where corals lie” is, of course, beneath the waves). The orchestra reflects the emotional undercurrents by veering between detached accompaniment and more entwined counterpoint. 5. The Swimmer: A lurid picture of the damage the savage sea does to men is juxtaposed with recollection of a past when the sea was a friendlier companion. The singer seems to conclude that Man has lost God's love, and reacts with a foolhardy challenge, obliquely similar to Waldemar's in Schoenberg's contemporaneous Gurrelieder, perhaps a startling sentiment for a traditionalist? Here Elgar unleashes his orchestra, even hurling in a tamtam (a rare gesture from him) at the crux of the final climax. *** A note on copyright. Sea lions pictures and sounds

01:57
Sea lions are sea mammals characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, and short, thick hair. Together with the fur seals they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean.[1] They have an average life span of 20--30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on an average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 8 ft (2.4 m) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 6 ft (1.8 m) long. The largest sea lion is the Steller's sea lion which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 10 ft (3.0 m). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5--8% of their body weight (about 15--35 lb (6.8--16 kg)) at a single feeding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_lion Together with the fur seals, they constitute the Otariidae family, collectively known as eared seals. Until recently, sea lions were grouped under a single subfamily called Otariinae, whereas fur seals were grouped in the subfamily Arcocephalinae. This division was based on the most prominent common feature shared by the fur seals and absent in the sea lions, namely the dense underfur characteristic of the latter. Recent genetic evidence, however, strongly suggests Callorhinus, the genus of the northern fur seal, is more closely related to some sea lion species than to the other fur seal genus, Arctocephalus.[2] Therefore, the fur seal/sea lion subfamily distinction has been eliminated from many taxonomies. Sea lions are related to the walrus and the seal. Nonetheless, all fur seals have certain features in common: the fur, generally smaller sizes, farther and longer foraging trips, smaller and more abundant prey items and greater sexual dimorphism. All sea lions have certain features in common, in particular their coarse, short fur, greater bulk and larger prey than fur seals. For these reasons, the distinction remains useful. Some species of sea lion are readily trainable and are often a popular attraction at zoos and aquariums. The archetypal circus "seal" performing behaviors such as throwing and catching balls on its nose and clapping is almost always a sea lion.[citation needed] The U.S. Navy's Marine Mammal Program, based in San Diego, has trained sea lions to detain scuba divers.[3] Sea lion attacks on humans are rare. In a highly unusual attack in 2007 in Western Australia, a sea lion leapt from the water and seriously mauled a 13-year-old girl surfing behind a speedboat. The sea lion appeared to be preparing for a second attack when the girl was rescued. An Australian marine biologist opined the sea lion may have viewed the girl "like a rag doll toy" to be played with.[4][5][6] In San Francisco, where an increasingly large population of California sea lion crowds dock along San Francisco Bay, there have been incidents in recent years of swimmers being bitten on the legs by large, aggressive males, possibly as territorial acts.[7][8][9] The Moche people of ancient Peru worshipped the sea and its animals. They often depicted sea lions in their art.

Did N.O.A.A Confirm The Existence Of Sea Monsters?

Support Us On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MysteryHistory We Are Also On Steemit: https://steemit.com/@mysteryhistory Julia, is the name given to the unknown source of a sound recorded on March 1, 1999. It was recorded on the eastern equatorial Pacific, using an autonomous hydrophone array. Heard for many thousands of kilometres, the source of the sound has been largely dismissed as an iceberg running aground somewhere off of Antarctica, it’s the point of origin being somewhere between Bransfield Straits and Cape Adare. What gave this story a rather chilling twist however, is a classified image which later surfaced, a classified image later redacted, taken by a NASA satellite, which shows something with an enormous shadow, within the waters of Cape Adare at the time, which if confirmed as a living animal, would be classified as a sea monster of gigantic proportions. The USA’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations, or the NOAA for short, have captured and subsequently released, a number of mysterious sounds of possible underwater monsters over the past few years. The Upsweep is an unidentified sound detected on the American NOAA's equatorial autonomous hydrophone arrays. This sound was present when the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory began recording its sound surveillance system, SOSUS, in August, 1991. It consists of a long train of narrow-band upsweeping sounds of several seconds in duration each. The source level was high enough to be recorded throughout the Pacific. The sound appears to be seasonal, generally reaching peaks in spring and autumn, but it is unclear why. The source can be roughly located at 54°S 140°W, which is near the location of volcanic activity, but the origin of the sound remains a mystery. The Whistle, recorded in the Mariana volcanic arc of the Pacific ocean, but since it was only recorded on one hydrophone, rather than the three required to triangulate a location, it is considered "unidentified. Bloop is the name given to an ultra-low-frequency and extremely powerful underwater sound detected by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in 1997. The sound's source was roughly triangulated to a remote point in the south Pacific Ocean west of the southern tip of South America, and the sound was detected several times. According to the NOAA description, it rises in frequency rapidly over the duration of one minute, and was of sufficient amplitude to be heard on multiple sensors, at a range of over 5,000 km. Dr. Christopher Fox does not believe its origin to be man-made, such as a submarine or bomb, nor is it familiar to geological events such as volcanoes or earthquakes. The audio profile of Bloop does indeed resemble that of a living creature, yet the source is a mystery both because it is different from any known sounds and because it was several times louder than the loudest ever recorded animal, the blue whale. Slow Down is name given to another mysterious deep sea sound, recorded on May 19, 1997, in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, name was chosen because the sound slowly decreases in frequency over a duration of 7 minutes. It was recorded using an autonomous hydrophone array. The sound has been picked up several times each year since 1997. And finally, the Train is the name given to a sound recorded on March 5, 1997 on the Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array. The sound rises to a quasi-steady frequency, what is especially interesting about this sounds is its origins, which are also within Cape Adare, the same general location as Julia. Could some of these sounds be the mating calls of unknown sea monsters? Maybe one day. We will find out… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unexplained_sounds

Ensemble Sirius - Sea Pictures, by Lars Karlsson

13:21
Lars Karlsson (ÅL) - Sea Pictures mov I & III I. Autumn Morning by the Sea III. Windy Afternoon This video was recorded at our concert the 16th of August 2017 in Koncertkirken, Copenhagen, Denmark. A Journey Through Nordic Nature The wild nature of the northern hemisphere has always had a decisive influence on Nordic cultures. Inspired by this heritage, Ensemble Sirius, a young all-female quintet, has chosen the Nordic nature as a theme for their musical project. The quintet asked six composers to create new works about Nordic nature, each piece lasting 10 minutes. Their goal is to see if the composers, each of Scandinavian origin, find a common Nordic tone. The concert will give the answer. The instrumentation of the ensemble is an unique constellation, which has given the composers freedom to play and experiment with a myriad of possibilities. During the concerts the composers will be present on video to talk about their piece and thus making the music even more ac- cessible to the public. The quintet’s vision is to focus on, develop and disseminate Nordic contem- porary music now and in the years to come. Their great wish is that every- one who listen will enjoy their music. The ensemble aims to recreate a common Nordic culture, an inclusive place to develop and celebrate community spirit – and also build up the net- work between the audience, composers and themselves, the performing musicians. Sea slumber Song Sea_Pictures by Sir Edward Elgar Aafje Heynis - Dutch Contralto http://www.cantabile-subito.de/Contraltos/Dutch_Contraltos/dutch_contraltos.html Text by Roden Berkely Wriothesley Noel See Slumber Song Sea-birds are asleep, The world forgets to weep, Sea murmurs her soft slumber-song On the shadowy sand Of this elfin land; I, the Mother mild, Hush thee, oh my child, Forget the voices wild! Hush thee, oh my child, Hush thee. Isles in elfin light Dream, the rocks and caves, Lulled by whispering waves, Veil their marbles Veil their marbles bright. Foam glimmers faintly white faintly white Upon the shelly sand Of this elfin land; Sea-sound, like violins, To slumber woos and wins, I murmur my soft slumber-song, my slumber song Leave woes, and wails, and sins. Ocean's shadowy might Breathes good night, Good night... Leave woes, and wails, and sins. Good night...Good night...

Pictures Of The Arctic Sea Ice In 1970 Versus Today And How Melting Sea Ice Affects Our

16:33
The Arctic may be free of ice for the first time in 10,000 years. Wadhams shows how sea ice is the 'canary in the mine' of planetary climate change. He describes how it forms and the vital role it plays in reflecting solar heat back into space and providing an 'air conditioning' system for the planet. Prof. Peter Wadhams is the UK’s most experienced sea ice scientist, with 48 years of research on sea ice and ocean processes in the Arctic and the Antarctic. This has focused on expeditions and measurements in the field, which has involved more than 50 expeditions to both polar regions, working from ice camps, icebreakers, aircraft, and, uniquely, Royal Navy submarines (6 submerged voyages to the North Pole ). His research group in Cambridge has been the only UK group with the capacity to carry out fieldwork on sea ice. He is Emeritus Professor of Ocean Physics and is the author of numerous publications on dynamics and thermodynamics of sea ice, sea ice thickness, waves in ice, icebergs, ocean convection and kindred topics. The current main topics of research in the group are sea ice properties, dynamics, and distributions in thickness and concentration. He is also a pioneer in the use of AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) under sea ice, using multibeam sonar to map bottom features, work which he has also been done from UK nuclear submarines. He began his research career at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge University, where he rose to become Director. He moved to DAMTP in 2001. He has also held visiting professorships in Tokyo (National Institute of Polar Research), Monterey (US Naval Postgraduate School), Seattle (University of Washington) and La Jolla (Green Scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography). He was the coordinator of several European Union Arctic flagship projects (ESOP, GreenICE, CONVECTION, and others) and is currently on the Steering Committee of the EU ICE-ARC project as well as a major US Office of Naval Research initiative in the Arctic. He served eight years on the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency and had served on panels of the National Academy of Sciences (USA). In 1990 he received the Italgas Prize for Environmental Sciences, and he has also been awarded the Polar Medal (UK) (1987) and the W.S. Bruce Prize of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. As well as being Professor at Cambridge he is an Associate Professor at the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche, run by Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, and is a Professor at the Università Politecnica Delle Marche, Ancona. He is a Member of the Finnish Academy and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. His most recent book, “A Farewell to Ice”, documents the ways in which the retreat of sea ice in the Arctic generates feedbacks which impact the entire global climate system, accelerating the rate of warming, the rate of sea level rise, the emission of methane from the offshore, and the occurrence of weather extremes affecting food production. He contends that catastrophic consequences cannot be avoided without making an all-out effort to develop ways of directly capturing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
