Tourists are surprised when a friendly sea lion (and his trainer) show up unexpectedly at a beach near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Everyone got to watch the sea lion play in the water, pose for pictures, and do a few tricks. This was part of a cruise ship shore excursion to Las Caletas beach, during a cruise on the Norwegian Bliss cruise ship. Las Caletas beach is a private attraction near Puerto Vallarta, developed and operated by Vallarta Adventures. Many visiting cruise ships offer this shore excursion to their passengers. My apologies for the distorted sound in portions of this video. I had placed my camera's recording volume mode in manual for a previous project, and forgot to set it back to automatic before shooting this video. Therefore, the soundtrack got distorted at times.

Sea lions are sea mammals characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, and short, thick hair. Together with the fur seals they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean. They have an average life span of 20--30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on an average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 8 ft (2.4 m) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 6 ft (1.8 m) long. The largest sea lion is the Steller's sea lion which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 10 ft (3.0 m). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5--8% of their body weight (about 15--35 lb (6.8--16 kg)) at a single feeding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_lion Together with the fur seals, they constitute the Otariidae family, collectively known as eared seals. Until recently, sea lions were grouped under a single subfamily called Otariinae, whereas fur seals were grouped in the subfamily Arcocephalinae. This division was based on the most prominent common feature shared by the fur seals and absent in the sea lions, namely the dense underfur characteristic of the latter. Recent genetic evidence, however, strongly suggests Callorhinus, the genus of the northern fur seal, is more closely related to some sea lion species than to the other fur seal genus, Arctocephalus. Therefore, the fur seal/sea lion subfamily distinction has been eliminated from many taxonomies. Sea lions are related to the walrus and the seal. Nonetheless, all fur seals have certain features in common: the fur, generally smaller sizes, farther and longer foraging trips, smaller and more abundant prey items and greater sexual dimorphism. All sea lions have certain features in common, in particular their coarse, short fur, greater bulk and larger prey than fur seals. For these reasons, the distinction remains useful. Some species of sea lion are readily trainable and are often a popular attraction at zoos and aquariums. The archetypal circus "seal" performing behaviors such as throwing and catching balls on its nose and clapping is almost always a sea lion. The U.S. Navy's Marine Mammal Program, based in San Diego, has trained sea lions to detain scuba divers. Sea lion attacks on humans are rare. In a highly unusual attack in 2007 in Western Australia, a sea lion leapt from the water and seriously mauled a 13-year-old girl surfing behind a speedboat. The sea lion appeared to be preparing for a second attack when the girl was rescued. An Australian marine biologist opined the sea lion may have viewed the girl "like a rag doll toy" to be played with. In San Francisco, where an increasingly large population of California sea lion crowds dock along San Francisco Bay, there have been incidents in recent years of swimmers being bitten on the legs by large, aggressive males, possibly as territorial acts. The Moche people of ancient Peru worshipped the sea and its animals. They often depicted sea lions in their art.

The Japanese Sea Lion, Nihon ashika, Zalophus japonicus) was an aquatic mammal thought to have become extinct in the 1970s. Prior to 2003, it was considered to be a subspecies of California sea lion as Zalophus californianus japonicus. However, it was subsequently reclassified as a separate species. Harvest records from Japanese commercial fishermen in the early 1900s show that as many as 3,200 sea lions were harvested at the turn of the century, and overhunting caused harvest numbers to fall drastically to 300 sea lions by 1915 and to a few dozen sea lions by the 1930s. Japanese commercial harvest of Japanese sea lions ended in the 1940s when the species became virtually extinct. In total, Japanese trawlers harvested as many as 16,500 sea lions, enough to cause their extinction. The most recent sightings of Z. japonicus are from the 1970s, with the last confirmed record being a juvenile specimen captured in 1974 off the coast of Rebun Island, northern Hokkaido. There were a few unconfirmed sightings in 1983 and 1985.

A cute sea lion hitches a lift on a boat, and is fed fish by the boat's passengers, in this adorable sea lion encounter caught on camera. "We went Marlin fishing for the first time in Cabo. We had a successful trip and while we were heading in, I noticed a bunch of people taking pictures of our boat. We couldn't figure out what was going on, until my husband noticed a large sea lion following our boat quite closely in the wake. He offered him one of our bait fish, and low and behold, he jumped aboard and rode on the back of the boat with us while we fed him. Even my 6 yr old son was able to feed him! He was just amazing. It was the memory of a lifetime!" The filmer wrote online. This footage is being managed exclusively by Newsflare. A San Diego fisherman was attacked and dragged underwater by a hungry sea lion while he was posing for a picture with a fish he just caught. Daniel Carlin was on his boat posing for a picture with a large fish he had just caught when a hungry sea lion snapped the fish and the man's hand and arm. With amazing strength, the 300-kilos animail then pull the man and the fish off the boat and dragged them for some meters in the water. When eventually the sea lion loosened the grip, Carlin managed to escape and swim back to his boat where his wife helped him to get back onboard. He suffered a broken hand and an injured foot, but commented to ABC News that he feels very lucky to have made it alive. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. While many people had a day off from work on Memorial Day, it was a good thing several San Francisco police officers were on duty because they rescued this baby sea lion. It was stranded in an empty stairwell at Ocean Beach early Monday morning. The officers stayed with the sea lion — which is believed to be 11 months old — until rescue workers could pick it up. A spokesperson from a local rescue center told KTVU the sea lion is malnourished, weighing only 27 pounds. It could be one of two types found in California. One is the California sea lion, which can weigh as much 850 pounds. But stellar sea lions are much larger, weighing up to 2,500 pounds when fully grown. Since 2013, unusually high numbers of baby sea lions have washed up on California beaches. A record 3,340 were stranded in 2015. As a shelter cares for the rescued sea lion, the officers gave the animal a name. They chose "George Bison," drawing inspiration from their police station's call sign and their softball team's mascot. This video includes clips from the San Francisco Police Department and images from the San Francisco Police Department, Getty Images and NOAA's National Ocean Service. Shark chocking on a sea lion: http://bit.ly/1k7QB78 1. Who knew sea lions were so fast? MAURYAN FUN & STUDY PICTURES, The Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), also known as the northern sea lion and Steller's sea lion, is a near-threatened species of sea lions in the northern Pacific. It is the sole member of the genus Eumetopias and the largest of the eared seals (Otariidae). Among pinnipeds, it is inferior in size only to the walrus and the two elephant seals. The species is named for the naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, who first described them in 1741. The Steller sea lion has attracted considerable attention in recent decades owing to significant, unexplained declines in their numbers over a large portion of their range in Alaska
