product design advice to students

02:55
Advice to students studying product design. I've seen a lot of product design students producing really expert renderings, but their designs wouldn't work in production. This is simply because they have been too quick to get into CAD without making models/prototypes to see if their designs work. So I wanted to make an instructional video, championing the benefits of making models to test ideas and not jumping into CAD too quickly. This is a summary of some of the things I have learnt on my design journey, from university to being a professional designer for 7 years. Whilst I was putting the video together, I remembered the Baz Luhrman Sunscreen song and decided to use it as inspiration for my own version. The narration for the video is below: Students of product design - make models. I have seen hundreds of portfolios, where students have been too quick to use CAD without first testing their ideas to see if they will work. The long term benefits of making models to quickly identify and solve problems has been proven by product designers over and over again. The rest of my advice is purely opinion. I will deliver this advice with a large nod to Baz Luhrmann, now. Design is a journey, when you begin a project you should not know what the end destination looks like. Do not be in a rush to get to the final solution. Get lost, go down many paths and enjoy what you discover. Always go too far and then come back. Research, know your audience, walk a mile in their shoes and if you can't, try to understand all the nuances surrounding who you are designing for and what you are designing. Never stop asking why. What ever you design, always try to make it new in some way. The brief is king, challenge it, exceed it, but you must answer it. CAD is only one tool, currently it cannot tell you how something feels or behaves in your hand or how heavy or uncomfortable it is in use. A pretty picture of a design is not a product. Take things apart, you cannot hope to improve anything if you don't know how it works. If you take a found object and put a light bulb in it, you are just up-cycling. People say you are only as good as your last project, rubbish! You are only as good as your next project because of everything you have learnt. Make lots of mistakes and learn from them. No real good has come from forcing anything, take regular breaks. Never think, 'that will do'. Don't design to make money, design because you care and trust me about making models. more at www.producttank.co.uk

product design rendering and sketching by product tank

06:31
This is a product design sketching and rendering tutorial that I've put together for industrial design students. Sketching is something that I know I should do more of, but we're all busy people, so I've picked up a few drawing and rendering tips along the way to make things faster and look better especially for those of us who know we are not as good as we should be. I would like to thank Ben Davies from Rodd Industrial Design for teaching me most of this stuff, it was a long time ago, but - credit where its due. In this video I set out how product design presentation sheets used to be created using pen and marker techniques, which is making a come back at the moment. I then look at the common mistakes we all make from time to time and how to a few simple things will vastly improve the look of your presentation sheets. Finally I focus on how to make a very professional looking product design presentation sheet in a short space of time using Photoshop and then show that even if you prefer to use drawing programs or apps on your tablet or computer, the process is very much the same. I hope you enjoy the video and if interested in seeing more, hit subscribe, because more good stuff is on its way.

How to make your sketches more real - Industrial design sketching

11:33
DOWNLOAD THE DESIGNER STARTER KIT: http://bit.ly/thedesignerstarterkityt Improve your sketches with this simple sketching TIP! Software: Sketchbook Pro More tutorials at http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com How to make your sketches more real - Industrial design sketching Full article on the blog. When you start learning how to sketch, you study and practice basic rules drawing line of perpective, line of geometry and simple shapes such as square, circles… and so on. We are going to see something that will change your daily habit when you draw. At the end of the video you will know how to make you simple shape become more real. In other words, how you will transform a geometric shape to an object. At the end of the video, you will see a small demo with a touch screen phone. Recipe from basic shape to more realistic sketch Recipe to draw from geometric shape to a more realistic object. This simple technique will push you to the next level ! – Feel free to add some line weight below the object to give it more weight. (It’s like a dark and thin shadow below the rounded edges) Same logic here. Can you feel the difference ? Reminder: Draw the full ellipses for the sphere contour line. Or your sphere may appear flat. For the sphere, it’s already all rounded. So how to add more rounded edges ?? You simply can’t. But we can play with a bit of lighting and the contour lines. I bold a bit the edges of the contour lines, especially below the “ball”. Make sure your contour lines goes inside the hole to understand it. Play with your angle of contour lines to decide of the roundness. You don’t have to be perfect in your drawing. Make sure your perspective is fine and that your main shape is there. Then, everything will be alright. That’s all for today ! Pretty easy right ? So now it’s the time to take a pen and practice ! Let me know about your sketches in the comments, or let me a question if you have any.

Sketching and Rendering - Students of Product Design Episode 3

15:13
Episode 3 of Students of Product Design is all about sketching, rendering and creating presentation sheets of your design ideas. In this episode I look at simple hand rendering techniques to improve your presentation sheets using a variety of artists materials including pens, pencils and markers. The main message of the video is that it doesn't matter what materials you use to create your concept design presentations, it's about communication, about how easily and clearly you can tell a story and about how well you have answered the brief. There are various techniques I use to improve the quality of my finished sketches. Drawing slowly improves the quality of your lines and outlining with a thicker black pen will help make your design ideas stand out. Adding drop shadows, a background square and some targeted notes also makes your presentation sheets look more professional. I use a variety of materials but some industrial design students have contacted me to say they can't afford expensive art materials, so to demonstrate that it doesn't matter what you sketch with, at the end of this video I create a design presentation using a set of children's crayons, a few felt tip pens and a Biro. Concept design presentations are about the strength of your ideas and how well you communicate those ideas, as well as how well you can draw. I hope you enjoy episode 03 of Students of Product Design, I'll always try and answer any questions you have if you post them in the comments box. www.producttank.co.uk

Rick Tegelaar interview: Meshmatics Chandelier for Moooi | Design Dreams | Dezeen

03:33
Designer Rick Tegelaar explains how the Meshmatics Chandelier he developed at university became a Moooi product in this movie in our Design Dreams series for the Dutch brand. Launched by Moooi at Milan design week in 2017, Tegelaar's Meshmatics Chandelier is made from three concentric, inverted wire-mesh domes of different diameters and heights. The wire structure reflects light emitted from an LED source concealed within a smaller gold dome at the base of the chandelier. "It's a big light, but it's not a big visual block," Tegelaar says in the movie, which Dezeen filmed for Moooi in Arnhem and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. "It's really transparent. It's almost like a cage for the light, so you have all these different transparencies and reflections that give this very basic material something almost magical." The light is the culmination of many years work for Tegelaar – he first developed the technique of using wire mesh to create lights while studying product design at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem between 2007 and 2011. He says that he felt mixed emotions in finally letting go of the product. "Meshmatics Chandelier being in the collection of Moooi is a bit like my child leaving home," he says. "It is a bit scary, but it's also nice to see the product really taking off and popping up in showrooms around the world." Rendering - Students of Product Design Episode 04

13:19
In Episode 4 of students of Product Design, I'm mainly looking at using photo editing software to render hand drawn design sketches to make my product design presentation sheets look more professional. Having photographed a sketch and imported it into Photoshop, I cover a simple set of techniques that I use for all my presentation sheets, laying down a base colour, an effect when necessary, shadows and highlights. To understand the idea behind this, I look at materials and the different properties they have, how they react to light and easy ways to look at this and apply what you see to your presentation sheets. The most important message in this video is that most of the time I don't know what's right, but over the years I have developed a good eye for what's wrong with my presentation sheets, a bad perspective, the wrong colour etc, so all I do is keep making my sketches less wrong and each time I do this they creep closer to being right. This is all I do when designing a product, I keep tweaking each part of the design until it's as good as I can make it. At the end of the video I look at how to develop a brand language that can be applied to other products as a company diversifies its product range and expands in to other markets. Lots of industrial designers cleverly use colour, form, texture, materials and a logo to strengthen a brand and reinforce its values with consumers. The example I create is a bit tongue in cheek and very cheesy, but hopefully shows the basics of how it's done. I hope you enjoyed Students of Product Design episode 4. If you have any questions, let me know - I do try to answer everyone who asks a question, but sometimes it's not possible if the question is asked through Google Hangouts etc. PT www.producttank.co.uk

amazing adjustable lamp - producttank

01:07
www.producttank.co.uk An amazing adjustable table lamp I've designed and prototyped to see if I can better the traditional anglepoise lamp. The design uses a cam, that when released means the design becomes totally flexible until the cam is once again locked and then the whole lamp becomes rigid and locks in place to direct light to what ever the user wants to focus on. The model is made in wood and the design was inspired by the mechanism used in a simple toy. I also designed and built the table you see in the video.

How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen

13:07
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

How to draw [Random product] design in 4 steps | Industrial Design Sketching

15:17
++DOWNLOAD THE FREE SKETCHING GUIDES FOR BEGINNER: http://bit.ly/thedesignerstarterkityt ++Subscribe to the channel and get even more sketching tutorials at the blog http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com ++Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDesignSKetchbook Awesome music from http://www.bensound.com Today we’ll look at a 4 steps tutorial that will help you better draw in 3D. It’s a perfect training for whom face the Malediction of the Blank page, where you may face these challenges: ◾Can’t visualize any shape in 3d on a 2D paper ◾Or just no inspiration ◾So you feel paralysed. Note: I recommend you to watch the video about the Contour lines first – if you don’t know how to draw them. http://thedesignsketchbook.com/tip-10... The idea here is to create [Random products] without caring much about the real functions of the prodcut. However you will combine hardware details to give it a look of a product. This exercise allow you to train without complexing about the feasibility, and focus on researching new shapes. Observe hardware that surround you, identify the details and “Drag & Drop” these elements to your sketches: ◾Industrial: Screw, joints, cables, grooves… ◾Functional: Power cords, button, tab, icons… ◾Commercial: Logo, barcode, product specification, illustration… Random product sketches - Step by StepThe 4 steps of the [Random product] Step 1 Draw random shapes. Fill your paper of few random shapes. Step 2 Draw the contour lines Even if these shapes are flat, play with the contour lines to give them a 3D volume appearance. Try to represent it with the minimum of lines. Step 3 Draw more contour lines To give more definition to your shapes, add more contour lines. Step 4 Add details You don’t care much about the “real” functions, you just try to assemble different details together to make your shape looks like a product. Details will bring life to your shape. Assignment of the day: Take few objects such as phone, mp3 players, mouse, camera, kitchenware… observe them and practice the “Random product” challenge. If you can do that, the day you need to create a product from a brief, your might visualise better some shapes without putting your pen on paper yet. There will be side benefits to this training: ◾You will improve your quality of lines ◾Improve your vision in 3D ◾Get more familiar to the Happy accident (create new shapes randomly) ◾Put in practice your memory of forms ◾And let your ideas flow faster. Have fun ! And let me know how it goes. :)

ERCO Product Design: Klaus-Jürgen Maack about Alois Dworschak

13:41
Klaus-Jürgen Maack, former CEO of ERCO, presented an impressive speech for his product designer Alois Dworschak, who retired after having worked for ERCO for more than three decades. Klaus-Jürgen Maack was born 1938 in Lüdenscheid. He studied as printing engineer in Stuttgart. From 1965 till 2003 he was managing director of ERCO. He introduced ERCO´s maxim “We sell light, not luminaries” and introduced a paradigm shift for the company. His book “ERCO Lichtfabrik” offers a comprehensive overview of his corporate design and product design approach. With his visionary management the company received numerous awards for graphic and product design. He was awarded with the “Bundespreis für Förderer des Designs”. Maack was also chairman of the board of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. Mr Maack started originally an apprenticeship as industrial management assistant in a printing press in Bremen and studied printing in Stuttgart. In 1963, he started to work at ERCO in Lüdenscheid. With leading product designers he introduced innovative luminaire programs. In the mid of the 1970s he initiated the collaboration with the graphic designer Otl Aicher for defining the corporated identity for ERCO as a basis for the visual communication. Projects like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Louvre in Paris or the Reichstag in Berlin are illuminated by ERCO. Alois Dworschak was a product designer at ERCO for more than three decades and retired in January 2014.
