STRANGEST Creatures In The Arctic And Antarctic

10:53
With animals found all over the world, we’d bet you think you’ve seen all there is to see; that’s where you’re wrong, oh so very wrong. These creatures have all adapted special abilities and can withstand the frigid, harsh, and extreme temperatures found in the polar regions of planet Earth. From the adorable to the downright creepy, we present to you the 13 Strangest Arctic and Antarctic Creatures. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. Snailfish Although these guys don’t make their homes only in the Arctic and Antarctic, they make this list because, well, they do live in those places. Snailfish have the most species of all fish families in the deeper waters of the Antarctic region. They also have a wider depth range than any other family of fish but they stick to strictly cold waters, so any found in the tropics are deep-water only. The slimy-looking fish are highly-resilient creatures, and some contain antifreeze properties, making them able to withstand frigid temperatures. In May of 2017, the record for deepest living fish ever recorded was set by a snailfish caught on camera swimming 26,831 feet below the surface in the Mariana Trench. That’s nearly as deep as Mount Everest is tall, so they’re obviously some mutant form of super fish. 5. Springtail The springtail used to be classified as an insect but made its way from the bottom now they here, as an Entognatha, or a wingless arthropod. The reason for the change is the fact that they have internal mouthparts as opposed to the external found in insects. They are typically about .24 inches long or shorter and have segmented bodies that contain glycerol, which helps keep them from freezing to death, although it is still possible. Springtails also possess the ability to slow their metabolism down to conserve energy, and if stuff hits the fan and conditions get too extreme, they can shut down into a hibernation-like state. These heeby-jeeby inducing creatures can jump great distances using their tail-like, spring-like furcula that is continuously tensed under their bodies just waiting to be released and because of their jumping habits they’ve been given the nickname “snow flea. We’re just going to say that we’d probably freak if we found them on ourselves or our cats. Especially our cats. 4. Sea Spider Alright, so this guy looks like a straight creepy-crawly of the ocean; somebody bust out the bug spray. But in all seriousness, meet the Sea Spider. A marine arthropod found in oceans all over the world, but extra large in the Antarctic and deeper waters. They’re not actual spiders, either. They’re classified as chelicerates, which makes them closer to spiders than other arthropods such as crabs and lobsters. These freaky bug-like creatures have tiny little bodies and really long, thin legs, numbering between eight and twelve. They have no respiratory system and a proboscis—basically a snout, or long tubular organ—that they use to suck necessary nutrients from invertebrates with soft enough skin to allow for penetration of the proboscis. They can grow to be up to 2.3 feet from leg to leg, and to that, we say nope. Keep your freaky self to yourself, Sea Spider. 3. Greenland Shark Want to hear something crazy? This bad boy has the longest lifespan of any vertebrate species, with scientists believing they can live between 400 and 500 years; that means right now there could be Greenland Sharks swimming around that were around while the Salem witch trials were going on in 1692. These predators are pretty restricted to waters of the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. They eat things like smaller sharks, Arctic char, cod, herring, flounder, and eels, but they’ve never even been observed hunting. They have, however, been found with remains of animals in their stomachs that they’re not known to eat, like polar bears, horses, moose, and once even an entire reindeer body. The meat of a Greenland Shark is toxic; despite that, it’s treated and served in Iceland as a delicacy. For now. It sounds like they’re kinda flirting with disaster. 2. Eulagisca gigantea This freaky fish-looking creature is actually not a fish at all, but a worm. Found on the seabed of the Southern Ocean, this little guy can grow to lengths of about eight inches and a width of around four. They almost appear like big shrimp, as they have forty segments and is dorso-ventrally flattened. They have bristles that can be used for swimming, self-defense, and probably crawling about on the ocean floor. The mouth-looking part of this worm is really a retractable pharynx that is the size of about a quarter of the length of the entire thing, meaning it’s terrifying. Its diet is unknown, but scientists believe that it is some kind of carnivore judging by the size of its jaws. Considering we don’t know what it eats, don’t get near one anytime soon. 1...

Top 9 Deadliest Animals of the Arctic

Animals of the arctic! Polar Bears, sharks & many more creatures live in this cold polar region covered in snow & ice. Support our Patreon today: https://www.patreon.com/theywillkillyou Subscribe for new videos: http://goo.gl/SaufF4 Follow us on Instagram: @theywillkillyou Voiceover by Carl Mason: [email protected] 9 Musk Ox These large Arctic animals are known for their long thick coats & horns. Musk oxen are members of the Bovidae family & their common name was inspired by their strong odor emitted by males during mating season. Both males & females have horns. Musk oxen are also known for their ability to pull weights that surpass their own body weight. They also have hooves that they use to break through solid ice in order to get to the water below. They travel in groups of up to three dozen & are very protective of their young. 8 Snowy Owl The snowy owl is the world’s most northerly bird with a white plumage that echoes its Arctic origins. This creature has a wingspan of more than 4 feet & may exceed 18 inches in height. Snowy owls are ground nesters. Bending over while slowly retreating from the area of the nest is the best course of action. 7 Greenland Shark Also known as the grey shark, the Greenland shark is one of the largest shark species on Earth, with proportions comparable to those of the great white. It’s believed that exceptionally large specimens can grow to be up to 24 feet in length while weighing a staggering 3,100 pounds. Greenland sharks also have the longest lifespan of all known vertebrate species as they can live to be more than 200 years old. Even though they prefer fish, the remains of seals, horses, reindeer, moose & polar bears have been found in the stomachs of Greenland sharks seals. 6 Arctic Wolf The Arctic Wolf or Canis lupus arctos is a gray wolf subspecies native to the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. One of the wolf’s most distinguishable features is it’s fur which is usually completely white. Arctic wolves can eat more than 20 pounds in a single sitting. In the harsh conditions of the Arctic a large animal may provide enough food for the entire pack for several days. 5 Wolverine Much like the popular comic book character that they’ve inspired, wolverines won’t shy away. Despite its small size, with a total length that rarely exceeds 42 inches & an average weight of 12 to 55 pounds, this animal will take on reindeer, moose, wolves & even bears. Even though it is a member of the Mustelidae family that includes weasels & badgers, this stocky & muscular carnivore more closely resembles a bear. Its scientific name, Gulo gulo, is derived from the Latin word for ‘glutton’. 4 Whale It’s hard to imagine what a human being could do if ever faced with this creature. Orcas are toothed whales & the largest members of the oceanic dolphin family. They’re found anywhere around the world from tropical seas to Arctic & Antarctic regions. These gigantic creatures can grow to be nearly 32 feet in length weighing up to 18,000 pounds. 3 Moose Moose are the largest of all deer species & own several interesting characteristics. Aside from height, which for some species may exceed 7 feet, & a weight that frequently goes well over 1,000 pounds, moose males also own large antlers. Drivers should be particularly weary of moose. 2 Walrus This massive semi-aquatic creature can weigh over 4,400 pounds. Because of its imposing size the walrus is also very strong & its body has a layer of blubber several inches thick that protects the animal’s vital organs. The most distinguishing feature owned by the walrus is a pair of large, elongated tusks, which, for males, can measure up to 4 feet in length. 1 Polar Bears Polar bears are the apex predators of their environment & the largest land carnivores in the world. Even though they are very large with average weights between 880 to 1,320 pounds, polar bears are surprisingly nimble both on the ice & in the water. They’re also capable of achieving speeds of up to 25 mph, which means that they’re faster than the average human & also well known for their immense strength. They have an elevated sense of smell, sight & hearing which enable them to detect something across great distances. This combined with their camouflaged fur means that by the time you realize a polar bear is behind you, it could already be too late.

SCARIEST Arctic Animals

09:32
From an arctic marine creature who’s tusk was once thought to be a unicorn’s horn to an animal that has the longest known lifespan on the planet, here’s our pick of the scariest arctic animals. Subscribe to Epic Wildlife http://goo.gl/6rzs5u Let's Connect -- http://www.epicadamwildlife.com/ -- http://www.facebook.com/epicadamwildlife -- http://www.twitter.com/epicwildlife -- http://gplus.to/epicwildlife Polar Bear Sailors received some unexpected visitors while they were surfaced in the submarine USS Honolulu 280 miles from the North Pole. Three polar bears wandered up to the vessel clearly wondering what the hell it was. They hung around for two hours before carrying on with their day. It must’ve been pretty awesome for the Honolulu’s crew to get such an up close look at the bears. Of course if they hadn’t been in their submarine it could’ve been an absolutely terrifying ordeal. Polar bears are huge, even by bear standards, normally weighing at least one thousand pounds. They don’t mean humans any harm, they’re far more interested in seals which make up the majority of their diet. As if this particular polar bear surrounded by wild dogs didn’t have enough to deal with it also has to face the harsh reality that its habitat is rapidly melting away. The bears have also been hunted en mass for decades though regulations and controls have led to rebounding populations in recent years. As scary as polar bears are, shouldn’t they be more scared of us at this point? Moose A rare moose who appeared as though he had just wandered out of the arctic ice appeared in the town of Eda in western Sweden as reported by the Washington Post. A man saw the creature and shot video, making the footage, which quickly went viral, some of the only ever recorded of a white moose. Out of the 400,000 or so moose that occupy Sweden, only around 100 are thought to be white, though none of them realize it. Some attained this fur color as a result of albinism, but most simply have a recessive gene that produces mostly white fur. Of course moose aren’t very scary in nature. But their size has caused some terrible, and often fatal collisions with vehicles, prompting signs like this one to be put up on roads where moose are known to wander around. Gyrfalcons (jur-falcon) Arctic hares have a tough time surviving thanks to two of their primary predators. On the ground they have to deal with the aforementioned Arctic Fox, who even at a young age can catch an adult hare with relative ease. They also have to worry about what’s going on above them because a gyrfalcon could swoop in out of nowhere. After it plucks the unlucky creature off the ground it glides to it's nest on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut where it uses the remains of the rabbit to build its nests. Out of all falcons the gyrfalcon is the biggest. On average they have a wingspan of 51 inches, though females are stockier than males. As you can imagine they don’t have very many natural predators. The golden eagle will occasionally try to mess with them, but even in this face off the gyrfalcon is a formidable opponent. Lion’s Mane Jellyfish Jellyfish are pretty weird, scary creatures. Stepping on one accidentally can produce an incredibly painful sting and ruin a day at the beach. It’s a good thing the lion’s mane jellyfish only lives in cold waters, because it's the largest known species of jellyfish, and uses stinging tentacles to pull in and eat or attempt to eat prey like fish, smaller jellyfish or human body parts. One washed up on the Massachusetts Bay in 1870 that was seven and a half feet long and had tentacles that measured over 121 feet. Their range extends from the Arctic to the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Thanks for joining us everyone we hope you’ve enjoyed the video. Keep the comments coming we love to hear from you guys and look out for our newest video coming tomorrow. But before you leave stick around for our last scary arctic creature. Ermine When people wanted to introduce the ermine to New Zealand to control rabbits there was a lot of skepticism. Scientists knew the ermine, or the stoat, to be one of the most troublesome, invasive species of animals on the planet. The warnings were ignored and stoats began to be moved to New Zealand in the 1880’s. Within six years a noticeable decline in bird populations had occurred. The culprit was of course the new residents, ermine. They live on Siberian and Canadian Arctic Islands as well as places further down south. Irish mythology cast the stoat in a very bad light. They were viewed as thieving animals whose saliva was rumored to be able to effectively poison a fully grown human being.

Animals in the Antarctic Ice

07:17
Animals in the Antarctic Ice The wildlife of Antarctica are extremophiles, having to adapt to the dryness, low temperatures, and high exposure common in Antartica. The extreme weather of the interior contrasts to the relatively mild conditions on the Antarctic Peninsula and the subantarctic islands, which have warmer temperatures and more liquid water. Much of the ocean around the mainland is covered by sea ice. The oceans themselves are a more stable environment for life, both in the water column and on the seabed. The Antarctic ice sheet is one of the two polar ice caps of the Earth. It covers about 98% of the Antarctic continent and is the largest single mass of ice on Earth. It covers an area of almost 14 million square km and contains 26.5 million cubic km of ice.[2] That is, approximately 61 percent of all fresh water on the Earth is held in the Antarctic ice sheet, an amount equivalent to 70 m of water in the world's oceans. In East Antarctica, the ice sheet rests on a major land mass, but in West Antarctica the bed can extend to more than 2,500 m below sea level. The land in this area would be seabed if the ice sheet were not there.

The animals include the reindeer, polar bear, Arctic fox, narwhal, walrus, seal, ox, moose, orca, and snowy owl. The Alaskan malamute is a powerful sled dog from Alaska. This small, white fox lives farther north than any other land animal. This white hare lives in the Arctic and has huge hindfeet. Arctic Animals - The Arctic has a wider variety of animal life than Antarctica. The North Pole is in the middle of the Arctic Ocean which is surrounded by the land masses of North America, Europe and Asia so there is a land connection meaning that land animals can more easily reach the Arctic unlike Antarctica where animals must be able to swim or fly there across hundreds of miles of frigid and storm-prone ocean even at the narrowest point. The animals of the north polar region can be seasonal visitors at the edge, permanent residents of the High Arctic or anywhere in-between. Please SUBSCRIBE & SHARE. Thanks ... Arctic Animals - a list of North Polar animals 4K

16:04
Arctic Animals - a list of North Polar animals | Arctic wildlife | Arctic animals and plants | National Geographic Arctic Animals Arctic Google Map https://goo.gl/s0ahPv The Arctic is a very cold, windy, and often snowy biome located around the North Pole. When referring to the Arctic, people usually mean the part of the earth within the Arctic Circle (an imaginary circle around the Earth, parallel to the Equator and 23 degrees 28 minutes from the North Pole, that is, above about 75 degrees North Latitude). Although there is no land at the North Pole, the icy Arctic Ocean is teeming with life ranging from the microscopic (like zooplankton) to the huge (like whales). There is also a lot of land within the Arctic Circle (northern parts of Asia, Europe, and North America). Land within the Arctic Circle is tundra, and it supports less life most other biomes because of the cold temperatures, strong, dry winds, and permafrost (permanently-frozen soil). Long periods of darkness (in the winter) and light (in the summer) also affect Arctic life. Arctic Land Zones: The most extreme Arctic land (the closest to the North Pole) is called the High Arctic Zone; this polar desert supports very little animal or plant life (less than 5 percent of the land area is covered with vegetation) due to a very short, dry growing season, dry air, permafrost, poor soils, and a lack of pollinating insects. The warmer Arctic region is called the Low Arctic Zone. This area supports more life, with more than 90 percent of the land area covered with hardy, cold-and-dry-adapted vegetation. Arctic Animals: Animals that live in the Arctic (either full time or seasonally) are adapted to extreme conditions. Many animals who overwinter in the Arctic (like the Arctic fox and the ermine) have a coat that thickens and changes color to white during the winter as camouflage in the snow (blending into the background is called cryptic coloration). Some animals hibernate during the cold season; they go into a very deep, sleep-like state in which their heartbeat slows down. These animals often hibernate in an underground burrow or pit. Some hibernators include skunks, chipmunks, and some bears (but these bears are not true hibernators, they go into a state that is closer to a normal deep sleep). Many animals (like the Arctic tern) spend the summer months in the Arctic, but leave as the weather turns frigid and food becomes scarce (these animals return again the next summer, repeating this pattern year after year). This behavior is called migrating. The Arctic has a wider variety of animal life than Antarctica.

10 MOST DANGEROUS OCEAN CREATURES IN THE WORLD

10:17
10 Most Dangerous Water Animals In The World ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] There are many different types of creatures that live in streams, lakes, seas and oceans. And while many of these creatures are harmless, there are many that are incredibly dangerous if you happen to have an encounter with them. These dangerous animals lurk beneath the surface of the water in a world vastly different than ours, and must be deadly to survive. Join us as we take a look at 10 of the most dangerous water creatures. 10. Australian Box Jellyfish – This creature is not one to be messed around with if you happen to swim into a swarm of them. And while they may seem harmless, the Australian box jellyfish is considered to be the most venomous marine animal in the world. They have tentacles that are covered with tiny darts called nematocysts, and they are loaded with poison. 9. Flower Urchin – Beautiful but deadly, these sea urchins are extremely venomous. They look like a bouquet of small flowers; to which they get their name from. They feed on invertebrates, sponges, and dead fish, and have well developed jaws for grinding up their prey. 8. The Saltwater Crocodile – Evolving around 200 million years in the Mesozoic epoch, crocodiles have far outlived the dinosaurs. The Salt water crocodile is the world’s largest reptile, and they have been known to grow up to 27 feet long and weigh 2,465 lbs. 7. Textile Cone Snail – Mother nature teaches us that anything in nature that is beautiful, is most likely deadly, and a warning to predators and humans to not touch or disturb them. This holds true for the Textile Cone Snail. 6. The Sea Snake – These highly venomous marine snakes are closely related and belong to the same family as the cobra. There are two independently evolved groups: the true sea snakes which are related to Australian terrestrial elapids, and the sea kraits which are related to Asian cobras. 5. The Lionfish – Lionfish are skilled hunters, using specialized bilateral swim bladder muscles to provide exquisite control of location in the water column, allowing the fish to alter its center of gravity to better attack prey. The lionfish then spreads its large pectoral fins and swallows its prey in a single motion. 4. The Stingray – Stingrays are a group of rays, which are cartilaginous fish related to sharks, and are one of the oceans deadliest creatures. Most stingrays have one or more barbed stingers on their tails, which are used exclusively for self-defense. 3. Blue-Ringed Octopus – This octopus has some of the most striking colors of any ocean creature. They get their name from the brightly blue colored rings on its body. 2. Needlefish – These strange looking creatures are very slender, and have a single dorsal fin, placed far back on the body. Needlefish are capable of making short jumps out of the water at up to 37 mph. Since Needlefish swim near the surface, they often leap over the decks of shallow boats rather than going around. 1. The Moray Eel - Most attacks stem from disruption of a moray's burrow to which they react strongly, but an increasing number of accidents also occur during hand feeding of morays by divers, an activity often used by dive companies to attract tourists.

Arctic Animals for Kids - Arctic Animal Sounds for Children to Learn | Snow Animals & Polar Animals

05:46
Arctic animals and arctic animal sounds video for kids to learn. Teach your children the snow animals and the polar animals with this educational video. Arctic animal sounds together with high-quality video of real animals will teach your children the animals living in the arctic quickly. Subscribe to Kiddopedia channel for more videos → https://goo.gl/O1jdcO Arctic animals are adapted to extreme conditions. Many animals that spend the winter on the Arctic tundra like the Arctic fox have a coat that thickens and changes colour to white during the winter as camouflage in the snow. Open water is scarce, so they should satisfy their thirst with snow. Some animals hibernate during the cold season; they go into a very deep, sleep-like state in which their heartbeat slows down. These animals often hibernate in an underground burrow or pit. Thousands of years of evolution have prepared the Arctic wildlife species like the polar bear, walrus and snow fox for life on and around the sea ice. Many polar animals spend the summer months in the Arctic, but leave as the weather turns extremely cold and food becomes scarce. They return again the next summer, repeating this pattern every year. This behavior is called migrating. The Arctic is a very cold, windy, and often snowy biome located around the North Pole. The warmer Arctic region which is called the Low Arctic Zone supports the majority of life. The Arctic has a wider variety of animal life than Antarctica. The North Pole is in the middle of the Arctic Ocean which is surrounded by the land masses of North America, Europe, and Asia so there is a land connection meaning that land animals can more easily reach the Arctic. Kiddopedia channel is the right place if you are looking for educational videos for babies & kids at preschool age. Only real arctic animal videos in HD quality are used for the preparation of this video. This will help your kids to learn the arctic animals quickly. 16 most known snow animals are a perfect starting point for the education of children. We also included the polar animal names in 14 major languages to help bilingual parents and children. You can teach your children the snow animal names in different languages which will help improve their snow animal’s vocabulary. National Geographic Documentary - Polar Bears Lifes - Wildlife Animals

50:21
The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a carnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is a large bear, approximately the same size as the omnivorous Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi).[3] A boar (adult male) weighs around 350–700 kg (772–1,543 lb),[4] while a sow (adult female) is about half that size. Although it is the sister species of the brown bear,[5] it has evolved to occupy a narrower ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting seals, which make up most of its diet.[6] Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time on the sea ice. Their scientific name means "maritime bear", and derives from this fact. Polar bears hunt their preferred food of seals from the edge of sea ice, often living off fat reserves when no sea ice is present. Because of their dependence on the sea ice, polar bears are classified as marine mammals.[7] Because of expected habitat loss caused by climate change, the polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species, and at least three of the nineteen polar bear subpopulations are currently in decline.[8] For decades, large-scale hunting raised international concern for the future of the species, but populations rebounded after controls and quotas began to take effect.[9] For thousands of years, the polar bear has been a key figure in the material, spiritual, and cultural life of circumpolar peoples, and polar bears remain important in their cultures.

FRIENDLIEST Sea Creatures Around The World!

11:32
Check out the friendliest sea creatures around the world! From incredible animals that saved peoples lives to the strangest ocean wildlife, this top 10 list of friendly creatures swimming around in the vast ocean is amazing! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "Most MYSTERIOUS Ocean Facts!" video here: https://youtu.be/BzrlpgRVPQg Watch our "Most TERRIFYING Sea Monsters Ever!" video here: https://youtu.be/B9aPB6KB504 Watch our "STRANGEST Things Found In The Ocean!" video here: https://youtu.be/XYfqi5VNgac 10. Sea Lions Sea Lions have long been associated with friendly interactions with humans, so much so that they form a large part of Peruvian culture- having been worshipped by the people there and depicted in numerous artworks. They are highly intelligent animals, which means they can learn tricks to entertain crowds, and are quite curious so they will often swim up alongside humans and play with them in the water. They are also used by the US military to assist SCUBA diving teams look for underwater mines and, in some instances, detain divers who have accessed restricted areas until authorities can arrive. Sea lions and dolphins are used as combat marine units and sea lions especially, have excellent eyesight. Sea lions are hardy, smart, and trainable and they have the added advantage that they are amphibious and can easily hand things to their handlers. This all makes Sea Lions sound like gentle creatures, but it’s important to know that sea lions have another side to them. If they aren’t treated well or respectfully, they can become quite aggressive. This can also happen with male Sea Lions because they are very territorial during mating season. If it looks like you’re bothering one then stay away but, if not, they are one of the friendliest sea creatures you’ll ever meet. 9. Beluga Whale Beluga Whales are native to the Arctic and sub-arctic, and are uniquely adapted to the cold waters. They are white in color, don’t have a dorsal fin, and have an enlarged head, which contains an organ called a melon that is used for echolocation. Beluga’s were actually the first type of whale to be kept in captivity, with the first being shown at Barnum’s museum in New York in 1861. To this day they are still the most commonly seen animal in marine parks across North America, Europe and Asia- mainly because they are much smaller than other species of whale and easier to contain. They are also a hit with visitors because of their unusual colour and wide range of facial expressions. They are really curious about the people who visit them, and often perform in shows with trainers who they develop deep bonds with. Since 1992 it has been forbidden to capture Belugas in Canada because of concerns for the population numbers in the wild, so now most of them come from Russia. They are so popular that each one can cost as much as 100,000 dollars. Whale watching tours are a great way to see them in their natural habitat, but it’s important for the boat not to get too close to them because of the way it can interrupt their daily activities. Quite often they enjoy interacting with the boats so much that they get distracted from things like feeding, social interaction with their own species, and breeding. They get so caught up in the moment, they forget what they’re supposed to be doing!! 8. Whale Shark You might not think a shark with a five-foot-wide mouth and more than 3,000 teeth would be the friendliest of creatures, but whale sharks are the most gentle of all shark species. They pose no threat to humans at all, and are usually pretty welcoming to those who want to swim alongside them. Despite their huge mouth, their throats are only the width of a US quarter, and they only eat tiny micro-organisms. Their average speed through the water is about 3 miles per hour, so they are easy to keep up with, and in a lot of tourist areas they are used to the presence of humans in the water, and don’t really seem to be bothered. Cancun is one of the best places to swim with these giants of the ocean, where you’ll really feel small next to a 65-foot-long and 12 ton fish. There really is nothing quite like being surrounded by a few of them, and the experience draws tourists from all over the world. If you visit “Las Afueras” you’ll even have a chance to be amongst a feeding frenzy of hundreds of them, which is a spectacular feat of nature. 7. Manatees Manatees, or sea cows, are also known as gentle giants, and it’s clear to see why. They are fully aquatic and feed mainly on plant life that they sift from the water. They can grow to up to 13-feet-long, weigh about 1,300 pounds, and push their way through the water with their paddle like limbs. 11 Scariest Ocean Predators

09:17
The ocean is full of mysteries, we have gathered a list of 11 of the scariest ocean predators.. that we know of today. Subscribe for weekly wacky videos and learn interesting facts about the world with awesome top 10 lists and other amazing videos. 5 - Leopard Seals - The Leopard Seal is a seal that can be found in the frigid waters of Antarctica. It gets its name from its black-spotted coat that resembles a leopard. Like their namesakes, Leopard seals are fierce predators. Of all the seals, they are the most formidable hunters, and the only ones that feed on warm-blooded prey. They can grow up to 12 feet long and use their powerful jaws and long teeth to prey on fish, squid, penguins, and even other seals! They will often wait underwater near an ice shelf and grab birds as they land on the water. 4 - Frilled Shark - The Frilled shark is a primitive looking shark found in the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, generally over the continental shelf and slope. It has been found lurking in depths over 5,000 feet. First discovered in the late 1800’s, this “living fossil” gets its name from the frilly or fringed appearance of its 6 gills and its resemblance to ancestors who swam with the dinosaurs. It has an eel like body which it uses to bend and lunge at prey like a snake. It swallows its prey whole and its many rows of teeth make it nearly impossible for anything to escape. It can grow over 6’ long. 3 - Lionfish - The Lionfish is a venomous fish which can be found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its body consists of red, white, and black bands, and it is covered in long brightly colored venomous spines that make it appear like a pin cushion. The Lionfish can grow up to 17 inches long and weigh up to 3 pounds. They mostly prey on small fish, invertebrates, and mollusks, which they eat in one bite. Humans who have been pierced by one of its spines experience extreme pain, vomiting, fever, convulsions, dizziness, and breathing difficulties, sometimes resulting in temporary paralysis, heart failure, and even death in the very young and old. Despite the dangers, Lionfish are one of the most popular fish for home aquariums. 2 - Great White shark – Also known as the white pointer and the white death, the great white shark can be found near the coastal waters of all the oceans. What makes the great white shark so terrifying is its size. The largest of these sharks grow up to 20 feet and 4300 pounds. Typically the females grow up to 16 feet and the males up to 13 feet. The great white can live up to 70 years and is one of the longest living cartilaginous fish known today. The killer whale is its only known threat and can usually hold its own against that predator. The great white feeds on almost all other marine animals and, although humans aren’t their preferred meal, they will happily feed on humans if given the chance. The most reported unprovoked shark attacks on humans has been attributed to the great white shark. It’s this piece of information that the movie Jaws was based on a “ferocious man eating” great white shark. 1 - Killer Whales - Killer Whales, also known as Orcas, are a bit of a misnomer as they actually belong to the dolphin family, of which they are the largest members. Scientists believe their name came from a mistranslation of a Spanish name, for whale killer. They are found all over the world in oceans from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Killer Whales can grow over 30 feet long and weigh over 9 tons. Despite its size, the Killer Whales are very agile and its large size and strength make it one of the fastest marine animals, able to reach speeds of over 30 miles per hour. It also has one of the most distinctive black and white color schemes, which make it stand out from any other marine mammal. They have good eyesight and excellent hearing and can detect prey using their very sophisticated echolocation ability. Killer Whales prey on fish and other marine animals, including seals and even other dolphins. They have even been known to hunt together in pods to kill full grown whales. They sit on top of their food chain and have no known predators.

Arctic Survivors

The Svalbard archipelago is Europe's northernmost point. For four months of the year, there is no sunshine, and for another four months, the sun never sets. This treeless polar wilderness is abandoned for the dark winter by all the creatures that can go elsewhere. For those that stay, it's a matter of battening down the hatches and conserving energy in the sub-zero temperatures. In the summer, however, Svalbard teems with life. The permanent residents spring into action, and seasonal visitors flock to the richest sea in the world-the Arctic Ocean.
