Mark and Heather are at the BEST Swim Centre in Mallorca and bring your their top tips for beginning your open water journey. Here are their 9 top tips for open water swimming: - Equipment: Buy a wetsuit that fits well to prevent fighting it or carrying lots of water in it. Make sure you can be seen with a bright coloured hat and ensure you have a good set of googles to be able to see the course and any dangers ahead. - Safety: This is paramount in open water swimming. Swim at a proper venue with water testing and make sure to swim with someone else or have a spotter on the side. Also, familiarise yourself with the course entry and exit point before jumping in. - Warm up: It can be difficult to warm up when the water is cold so limbering up before can make a big difference. A few press ups and arm swings will suffice. - Climatization: Sit on the edge with your feet in the water and splash some on your face to get your body used to the cold water. - Lie on your back: Enter the water slowly to allow your body to get used to the temperature change. A good way to relax is lie on your back and take several deep breaths to control your breathing. - Rescue: Should you find yourself in difficulty in deep water then roll on to your back and wave to catch someone attention. - Confidence: Build confidence by taking it one step at a time. Step one is to fully submerge whilst blowing bubbles do ensure you can control your breathing. - Start slowly: Don't rush in to a long swim, especially if you are new to the open water. Swim to a buoy a short distance away, then take a break before continuing. - Finally.... ENJOY IT! To help you swim faster freestyle we will go over 3 small details of freestyle kick that can make a big difference. The first is the form. The second is tempo. The third is the transition. The form of your freestyle kick will determine how fast you can move. To have a very effective kick you need to have amazing ankle flexibility. The more you have the less drag you will create. And the opposite is true, just look how I don’t move with my ankles like this. Also the knees need to be a little bent while going down and straight while going up. To do this you need to relax your hamstrings and activate your quads while the leg goes down and while it is going up activate your glutes, hamstrings, and calves. After you learn to have a good form when kicking you need to perfect the tempo of your kick. This can vary depending on the distance you are swimming but the most common tempo is 6 kicks for every 2 strokes. That is 3 kicks with one leg while one arm does one stroke cycle. The timing of the kicks is very important too. Because of the rotation and the movement of the muscles in your core, it is better if the right leg goes down when the left arm enters the water. while it is gliding you do another kick and use that momentum to start the pull while the leg comes down again. When you swim freestyle, the most effective thing you can do after the turn is to do several butterfly or dolphin underwater kicks. This carries the speed of your push. but the problem most people have is they lose that speed in the transition from uw kicks to freestyle kicks. The first few freestyle kicks are extremely important. They need to be fast and they need to start before the arms start moving. This also relates to the breakout video we did a while ago. check it out here in the info card. If you want to continue improving and not miss any of our videos make sure to subscribe and have the bell icon checked. How to Stay Safe at Sea Summer is a great time to enjoy the sun and the seaside, but both the beach and the sea can be full of dangers. To stay safe and protect your family you have know how to deal with all kinds of unexpected situations that can happen in the water. So grab a pen and paper and get ready to take note of these general safety rules when it comes to resting at the seaside. Don’t forget to pack all the beach necessities 0:55 You absolutely need to pack a first aid kit with medications for a variety of emergencies, prescriptions and devices like inhalers or EpiPens, sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, coolers with ice, plenty of bottled water, drinks and food. What to do if you’ve spotted a shark 1:44 Statistically, you have more chances of drowning somewhere near the beach or even being struck by lightning than becoming a victim of a shark attack. Still, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Be careful what you wear: sharks can negatively react to bright colors or shiny things. If you've spotted a shark, stay calm and concentrate on getting away and out of the water. Check for signs of aggression indicating that the animal is about to attack. If an attack seems inevitable, take a defensive position. Try to put a solid object between you and the animal. If there’s nothing at hand, the best way to scare a shark away is to scratch at its eyes or gills. How to avoid a jellyfish sting 6:02 Choose an area where you can swim safely. If you know that there are jellyfish around, avoid that place. If you’ve been stung by a jellyfish, get out of the water and stay calm. Don't touch or scratch the place of the sting because there might still be some tentacles attached to your skin. Pour some sea water over the affected area and leave it, don’t dry it off with a towel or anything. Then, pour a generous amount of vinegar over the tentacles in your skin and let it sit for at least half a minute. To relieve the pain, submerge the injured part of your body in warm water (about 110°F). What to do if you've stepped on a sea urchin 8:36 Make sure you’re not feeling any chest pain, nausea, or difficulty breathing. If you are, call emergency services. And if not, start by removing all the spines. Use tweezers to pull them out, especially if the ends of the spines are protruding. If they’re not, you can use hot wax. Once you’re sure that there are no spines left in your body, clean the wound with soap and water. What to do if you’ve been pulled into a rip current 9:50 Before going into the water, check for any suspicious-looking channels. Places with rip currents can be foamier or, on the contrary, quieter than others. If you've still got caught by the current, stay calm, it won't pull you underwater. If you start swimming parallel to the shore, you’ll manage to escape its pull. Music: Better_Than_It_Used_To_Be https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Beach necessities 0:55 What to do if you’ve spotted a shark 1:44 How to avoid a jellyfish sting 6:02 What to do if you've stepped on a sea urchin 8:36 What to do if you’ve been pulled into a rip current 9:50 SUMMARY -You absolutely need to pack a first aid kit with medications for a variety of emergencies, prescriptions and devices like inhalers or EpiPens, sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, coolers with ice, plenty of bottled water, drinks and food. -Never go into the water if there’s a posted warning on the beach. Don’t swim at night or at dawn or dusk. In the extremely rare instance of a prolonged deadly encounter, try to put a solid object between you and the animal (for example, a diving mask or surfboard). Don't stop fighting, this way the shark will get the message that you’re not worth all the trouble. -Pay attention to warning signs and watch for purple flags. That's the international sign that you’ll most likely encounter jellyfish in the water. If you see a jellyfish that’s washed ashore, don't touch it. -Start by removing all the spines. Use tweezers to pull them out, especially if the ends of the spines are protruding. If they’re not, you can use hot wax. Put it on the affected area, wait for it to dry, and pull it off; it’ll take the spines with it. -If you enter the water and feel a strong pull, get out immediately. As soon as the water gets up to your chest, it’ll be practically impossible to break free. If you've still got caught by the current, stay calm, it won't pull you underwater. This triathlon training session water all about having another go in my Ocra wetsuit ahead of the Hever Castle Triathlon at the end of September as it starts with a 100m open water swim. There was a bit of a cross wind but the current was't too strong and I had dad backing me up on his kayak for safety. I was happy with my wetsuit and after a problem with my goggles leaking at first dad soon sorted that and everything went well.

Nearly every surfer has experienced the sensation: pinned to the ocean bottom, trying to swim for the surface, desperate for a few quick gasps of air to avoid what might happen if they don't. It's a scary moment and therefore, a tough time to stay composed -- even the pros say so. According to Kurt Krack, who teaches a surf survival course around breath holding, composure is key. While on the North Shore, six Oakley surfers took part in Krack's two-day course to better prepare themselves for the type of hold-downs and life-threatening situations that come with competitive surfing and freesurfing waves like Teahupoo, Pipeline, Jaws and many of the other heavy-water breaks around the world. During the course, the crew of guys -- which ranged from big-wave surfers Danny Fuller and Rico Jimenez to WCT vets Melling and Tommy Whitaker to upcoming pros Eric Geiselman and Thomas Woods -- learned the science of how the body is affected by a lack of CO2 and then got in the pool to put into action their live-saving education. As you'll see, learning to stay submerged for upwards of four or five minutes isn't a feat strictly for NAVY Seals -- one of the guys added almost four minutes to how long he could hold his breath based on what he learned and applied.

I was watching a pod of orcas swimming up the beach, I saw a swimmer swimming along shore directly towards them, at this point I asked my partner to get my mobile phone as I wasn’t sure what would happen and I may have to call for help. The orcas circled her and she got quite the fright. She then got out the water as she was only 20m from shore. Some on lookers chatted to her about the experience and then to my surprise she got back into the water and swam back towards the pod, to I assume continue her training swim. I then launched the drone and filmed from a fair distance away making sure not to disturb the pod of orcas. What I witnessed was truly amazing. The beach lifeguards in East Lindsey train in the pool every week. This was a little session we did this week in Skegness (11/06/15). The lifeguards need to train to meet the fitness requirements of the RNLI. All lifeguards must be able to swim 400m (16 lengths of a 25m swimming pool) in under 7 minutes and 30 seconds; amongst other fitness tests.

Over 20 years of experience in the swimming world has taught me that there are 6 main skills for a long successful swimming career. 1- Adaptability Water is not the natural habitat for humans, so for swimmers, the more time you spend in the water, the better you will feel in it. 2- Technique kinesthetic intelligence, mobility and breathe control are the most important factors for a good swimming technique. 3- Endurance How long you can swim fast without stopping or slowing down is obviously important. Some of that is affected by genetics. However, this is what we mostly try to improve in our training. through intervals, rests, all-out swims, paces etc. 4- Mental balance There are two components of a healthy successful mindset- Mental toughness and the ability to enjoy oneself. 5- Social skills The quality relationships you have with your fellow swimmers, competitors and coach will be one of the main reasons why you will continue to improve. 6- Skill transfer The ability to transfer what you learn outside the pool and bring it in creative ways to improve your swimming will most likely be what distinguishes you from the rest.
