The Magic Mountain to go (Mann in 10.5 minutes)
It is stunning, how little the world has changed in the last hundred years if you look at the metaphysical struggle that dominates THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN, Thomas Mann’s famous novel: Young Hans Castorp enters the sanatorium Berghof in Davos in 1907 and spends seven years in this surreal biosphere in which rich people are dying together with sanity and liberalism. The representatives of humanism, first and forward Castorp’s mentor Settembrini, loose touch with reality and have to make way for the extremists of the world, personified by the Jesuit Naphta, whose suicide in the end is like the first shot of World War One - the apocalypse of European culture. Watch a compact and entertaining summary of the novel provided by Michael Sommer and his Playmobil cast. DISCLAIMER: WATCHING THIS VIDEO DOES NOT REPLACE READING THE ORIGINAL. It's a summary, which means I have left out loads of things. I recommend reading it for yourselves and hope my little video will entice you to do so.

Davos │Schatzalp/Strela - Thomas Mann's 'Magic Mountain' Hotel
After visiting several mountain regions, I've realized that Swiss mountains have something special - they are doubtlessly high and often partly covered with huge ares of grass. In contrast to that, mountains in Germany are more made up of large forests or mountains in Austria more look like masterpieces made up of enormous giant naked rocks. The Schatzalp is a Swiss mountain in the heartland of Davos - it is more famous because of it's alpine mountain hotel 'Schatzalp' that was also visited by the writer Arthur Conan Doyle. The German writer Thomas Mann mentioned the term 'Schatzalp' several times his legendary novel "The magic mountain" - definitely worth reading! So, if you reach the top of the mountain where you deboard the 'Schatzalp rail' you are on the platform where you'll find the above mentioned 'Schatzalp hotel'. If you go in your hiking tour, you will come across the botanic garden called 'Alpinum Schatzalp' with a kind of different herbs and sorts of alpin plants. The view over Davos while touring through the mountain areas is just amazing and absolutely calming. In case you wanna step up higher, then you will later reach the Strela - another mountain peak around the 'Schatzalp area. Maybe, if you love the pure nature - you will surely love the 'Schatzalp' mountain in Davos.' --- More information about ---- - Hotel Schatzalp from Thomas Mann's 'The Magic Mountain' https://www.schatzalp.ch/en/ - Davos - Schatzalp/Strela Mountain: http://www.davos.ch/en/summer/mountains/schatzalpstrela/ - Schatzalp Rail - Timetable: https://www.schatzalp.ch/de/schatzalp-bahn/ -- Botanic Garden 'Alpinum Schatzalp': http://www.wanderland.ch/en/services/places-of-interest/sehenswuerdigkeit-0446.html See you next time ...if you like! - Subscribe my Channel - Like - Watch again Stay tuned - your team from CosmopolitanViewTV Contact: [email protected] Video: produced by CosmopolitanViewTV, 2017.

35 Splendid Thomas Mann Quotes
Paul Thomas Mann (June 6, 1875 – August 12, 1955) was a German novelist, social critic, philanthropist, short story writer, and essayist. Born in Lübeck, Germany, Thomas Mann is known for his novels and stories that allow insight into the psychology of the artist. His works, especially early ones, were written under the deep influence of the philosophers Schopenhauer and Nietzsche and the composer Wagner. In 1929, Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, for “principally for his great novel, Buddenbrooks, which has won steadily increased recognition as one of the classic works of contemporary literature”. Thomas Mann’s significant works are Buddenbrooks(1901), Death in Venice(1912), The Magic Mountain(1924), Joseph and his Brothers(1933 - 1943), and Doctor Faustus(1947). "The Magic Mountain" - English translation by John E. Woods
Thomas Mann's novel "The Magic Mountain" (1924) is now available in two English translations. The original English translation was by Helen Lowe-Porter, and that was published in 1928. John E.Wood's translated version appeared in 1995, and is said to be a 'more accurate' translation of the original German text. The main character in the novel, Hans Castorp, (quie often referred to as "our young hero") is a young German man who travels to a Sanatorium (The Sanatorium Berghof) up in the Swiss Alps to visit his cousin for three weeks, but ends up staying at the Sanatorium for seven years ! During that seven year period, he meets a variety of interesting characters who are patients at the Sanatorium. Some leave, some die (including his cousin), and some commit suicide, most notable of whom is the character known as Pieter Peeperkorn (an eccentric Dutchman from Java). (Peeperkorn arrived at the Berghof accompanied by Madam Chauchat - a woman who Hans Castorp had fallen in love with). Hans Castorp's favourite song is Schubert's "Der Lindenbaum" (The lime tree), which he listens to over and over again on the windup gramaphone in his room. (See my other video "Hans Castorp, Schubert's Linden Tree, and War !").

Thomas Mann: His Life and Work (documentary)
The documentary examines the life and work of German literary icon Thomas Mann, beginning with Mann's nomination for the 1949 Goethe Prize. His symbolic representation of Germany in exile after the war, and his status as a representative of the liberal, humanist tradition, are juxtaposed against Mann's private life. The program discusses how his works, such as Death in Venice, explore the disparity between the life of bourgeois convention and desire, a disparity present in Mann's own life. From the suicide of his eldest son, to his own homosexuality, the program explores the dual identity of Mann as representative of post-war Germany and also as private citizen. Hans Castorp, Schubert's "Linden Tree", war & death.
Hans Castorp listens to Schubert's "Der Lindenbaum" on his windup gramophone in his room. Hans Castorp leaves the Swiss sanatorium on 'The Magic Mountain' in 1914 (after a seven year stay), and joins the German Army. This is the end of the novel, and there is no mention of what happens to our 'hero' Hans Castorp after that. (He may have survived the war, or, more likely, he may have been killed on the battlefield). From Thomas Mann's novel "The Magic Mountain".

Akina Cox Book Report on The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann
Akina Cox tells us about "The Magic Mountain" from a cave on the Moon during the Eternal Telethon. The Eternal Telethon raises money to start an artist retirement home through a series of live webcasts. To find info like how to make a donation and watch the next Eternal Telethon go to www.EternalTelethon.com The Magic Mountain (Der Zauberberg) is a novel by Thomas Mann, first published in November 1924. It is widely considered to be one of the most influential works of 20th century German literature. Mann started writing what was to become The Magic Mountain in 1912. It began as a much shorter narrative, which revisited in a comic manner aspects of Death in Venice, a novella that he was then preparing for publication. The newer work reflected his experiences and impressions during a period when his wife, who was suffering from a lung complaint, was confined to Dr Friedrich Jessen's Waldsanatorium in Davos, Switzerland for several months. In May and June 1912 he paid her a visit and became acquainted with the team of doctors who were treating her in this cosmopolitan institution.

#leselawine Tomas Mann "Der Zauberberg"
#leselawine is a project of Literaturfest München (2013, November 6 - 23) celebrating novels' first sentences, every author's personal terror. Collecting first sentences, reading and publishing them - here is mine, Thomas Mann's intro of "Der Zauberberg" (The Magic Mountain), one of my favourite yarns, read in German - more about the "Magic Mountain" on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magic_Mountainand the project (in German) on http://blog.litmuc.net/2013/10/16/mehr-salz-ilsebill-wir-starten-die-leselawine/ - and here are the lines in English: Foreword THE STORY of Hans Castorp, which we would here set forth, not on his own account, for in him the reader will make acquaintance with a simple-minded though pleasing young man, but for the sake of the story itself, which seems to us highly worth telling—though it must needs be borne in mind, in Hans Castorp's behalf, that it is his story, and not every story happens to everybody—this story, we say, belongs to the long ago; is already, so to speak, covered with historic mould, and unquestionably to be presented in the tense best suited to a narrative out of the depth or the past"

Discussing the end (and aftermath) of 'The Magic Mountain'.
Nigel Hamilton discusses the final chapter (and aftermath) of Thomas Mann's novel "The Magic Mountain". Due to a 'series of events' created by others, Thomas Mann's German citizenship was revoked (in absentia) by the Nazis in 1936. (He was in France when Hitler came to power in 1933, and did not return to Germany. Instead, he settled in Switzerland, and later, in 1939, moved to the United States). Thomas Mann died in Switzerland, in 1955. His wife Katia (seen in the video), died in 1980.

Erste Thomas Mann Lecture: Highlights
**************************** http://www.tma.ethz.ch http://www.library.ethz.ch https://www.explora.ethz.ch Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ETHBibliothek Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ETHBibliothek/ Follow Explora on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/explora_ethlibrary Like & subscribe!
