5 Secrets to Writing a Bestselling Novel — Secret #3: Your Story Structure
Writing a novel without first creating a structure is like building a house without even having a floor plan. Learn how to create the SIX KEY MOMENTS in your novel; these are essential scenes that shape the direction of the story. Get more info: http://www.writetosellyourbook.com/work-with-diane Transcript: Hi! I’m Diane O’Connell, book development expert and founder of Write to Sell Your Book. Welcome back to my video series: Five Secrets to Writing a Bestselling Novel. Today I’ll share the third secret: Your Story Structure. In my 25 years working with authors, I’ve seen many first-time novelists who write by the seat of their pants without first creating a structure. That’s like a homebuilder who hammers away, building whatever room inspires him before he has a floor plan. Can you imagine the disaster? In creating your structure, you must first establish your novel’s key moments – the blueprint for your book. These are the essential scenes that shape the direction of your story. Key moments that create conflict and raise the stakes higher and higher. Without this, your story takes too long to get going, drags in the middle and ends on a whimper. Here are the six key moments to include: The first key moment is your Current Reality, which establishes your protagonist and novel’s setting. It’s your main character in his everyday life when the story opens. For example, in The Godfather we meet Michael Corleone. His Current Reality is he’s a war hero, determined to avoid his father’s way of life as a Mafia Don. The Second key moment is The Happening -- the event that changes the protagonist’s reality. For example, when Michael Corleone’s father is shot by an adversary, this event is the happening, which he must respond to. The Third key moment is The Choice, where the main character makes a decision that will change his life forever. After Michael gets his jaw broken on orders of his father’s adversary, he vows to seek revenge and masterminds the murder of the rival family. Michael will never go back to his earlier way of life. He has now been pulled into the Mafia. The fourth key moment is The Moment of Truth. At this moment, your character is at his lowest point where he will either rise above his problem or sink into it. Whatever your moment of truth is, make it dramatic. Michael Corleone’s moment of truth is when he decides to decimate the rival families. Michael has sunk deeply into a life of crime. There’s no turning back. Shortly after the moment of truth is The Final Confrontation this is where the main conflict comes to a head. While Michael and his family are in the midst of a baptism, his soldiers carry out his plan, unleashing a torrent of death upon the family’s enemies. The final key moment is the New Reality. For a story to be truly profound, your new reality must be worlds away from the Current Reality we started with — at least in your main character’s eyes. When Michael’s wife accuses him of ordering the death of his brother-in-law, he boldly lies, denying it. He has gone from idealistic war hero to kingpin of a corrupt family business. These key moments raise the stakes, making for a suspenseful, emotionally wrenching story. Crafting your key moments in advance will save you from countless rewrites and will ensure your novel is riveting. I’ll talk about this more in my next video, where I’ll show you how to write your draft quickly. I’m Diane O’Connell. Thanks for joining me. See you in the next video! Stay tuned for more great tips! www.WriteToSellYourBook.com

Improve English Through Writing - Adventure Story Builder - 1 - Up We Go! - 6 - EnglishAnyone.com
http://www.englishanyone.com/power-learning/ Learn to express yourself confidently in fluent English and sound like a native speaker with our FREE Power Learning video course! Adventure Story Builder -- 1 -- Up We Go! -- Part 6 George and his wife Jane have been married for many years. They love to stay at home, watch movies and play with their pet cats. Their married life has been nice but uninteresting. They have never traveled or done anything exciting. Until now! Today they are throwing caution to the wind. They are trying something wild and unexpected for their 20th wedding anniversary. Today they are climbing Mount Everest! What are they carrying? What will they do? Do they look excited? Are they ready for an adventure? George and Jane departed their mountainside inn and walked by moonlight down into the forest below. The jungle was hot and sticky, even at night time. Descending into the trees, they came across a bald man floating on a beautifully carved tree stump. George and Jane had never seen such a thing! What was the man doing? What was he thinking? And what stories would he have to tell? George and Jane enjoyed their midnight stroll through the jungle and would never forget their amazing encounter with the floating monk. Unfortunately, their relaxing evening was about to come to an abrupt end. All at once, George and Jane were attacked by a group of talking monkeys who loved designer fashion! "Folks 'round these parts only carry woven baskets!" cried one of the monkeys. "Are these Gucci?" called out another, grabbing at George's shoes. Would they escape with their clothes on? Did the monkeys have a favorite brand? And how were the monkeys able to speak? After escaping from the monkeys with most of their fine clothing, George and Jane entered a cave glowing with beautiful, colorful light. They saw what appeared to be an amazing blue vine and moved closer to examine it. To their surprise, the blue vine was a dragon! The dragon appeared to be protecting a sacred tree, and was speaking with a large, white egret. George and Jane moved closer, quietly, to listen in on their conversation. What were they discussing? Where were the bird and dragon from? And what was the tree that the dragon was protecting? After hearing a great story from dragon and egret, and learning about the purpose of the sacred tree, Gorge and Jane continued on their journey. The sun rose to reveal an ancient city built in the mountains. Lured by an inviting aura, George and Jane headed towards the old city. At the entrance, George and Jane were welcomed by two calm, smiling faces. After an adventurous night, George and Jane looked forward to a day of relaxation. George and Jane became the first guests of the city in more than 300 years. Many of the citizens, themselves were more than 1000 years old! What was the secret of their youth? What treasures did the elders of the city give George and Jane? And how would our heroes decide to leave paradise? In the ancient city, George and Jane were invited to meet with the two oldest and wisest elders. As they ascended a mountain trail for their meeting, they traveled through a spectacular garden teaming with beautiful white egrets. After more than three hours of climbing, George and Jane finally reached the hall of the two elders. George and Jane were amazed to hear that the tall elder knew their past while the small elder could see their future. What did George and Jane learn from the two elders? And what was the source of their power? At the end of their amazing journey, George and Jane lack the strength to get back down the mountain. They need some serious help from their guides. How was their trip? Who did they meet and what on Earth did they do? Write part of the story below and get fluent faster! We'll be back next time with another piece of the story! 5 Questions to Ask Before Writing a Book
Are you thinking about self publishing and writing a non-fiction book? Maybe your friends are always telling you to write a book to share all your experience and expertise. A book is a great way to build your brand, become known as an expert and make a lot more money. But, it's not always easy to know exactly what to write - especially if you want to write a book that will actually sell. In this video, Julie Broad, award winning author, founder of BookLaunchers.com, explains five questions to ask before you start writing your non-fiction book. I had a friend contact me saying I want to write a book and I said great what do you want to write about but he didn't really know he just said I'm driven to write a book so as we started to dive into it I started to ask him some questions and I thought you know what these questions might help you if you're planning a book project any time in the future. FIRST QUESTION: So, first of all I was asking him the areas that he's interested in and he has expertise, then we started to look at the categories and genres on Amazon where those books might fit in as we narrowed it down, I said what are you reading these days? If you are not already reading books that fit into that category that fit into that genre you're probably not really that interested in the subject so are you gonna be interested enough do write research publish and then promote your book baby. SECOND QUESTION: Do you already understand what makes a book in that category successful? What is common through most of the books in that category or at least what is common through the top 20 that are selling really well in that category what kind of things do they address how are they written you know do they have pictures do they have charts do they have other resources available these are all things you want to consider carefully and plan for before you write your book. THIRD QUESTION: How long are the top 20 books that are currently selling on Amazon now? Here's how you figure out top 20 by the way let's just go into Amazon go into a category let's pick a category okay let's go into bestsellers here's your top 20 Now, I check this on a regular basis this changes by the hour based on sales but come back and see which ones are here for the next month for example and if you haven't already go read those books and figure out what they have in common right how long are they are they printed in is this is this top 20 version the selling is it a Kindle or is it a print book. FOURTH QUESTION: Look at those books and figure out what else is in common you can even make a chart so I already said how long are they but now I want to look at the cover design I want to look at the pricing I want to look at the format's they're available I'm getting even gonna look at who the authors are. FIFTH QUESTION: What makes you unique because you want to have the common elements that are in all the books that are successful that are selling in your genre in your category but you also need something that makes you different so what is that thing what is that subject what is that opinion what is your experience what's the angle you're gonna take that makes you different and the only way you're gonna figure that out is by reading a bunch of the books and starting to compare notes. So that's the approach I took with my friend to help him narrow it down now he's read quite a few of the books in this category which was good news it means he's in a category he's already interested in he already had a sense of the style of book that he wanted to write it's like a book that's been a best-seller for five years in this category so he's already got that plus he knows his unique spin so now it's just a matter of fine-tuning and researching a few of the other pieces and reading some of the newer books that are on the market in this category and trying to identify why they're successful if you do this before you write your book you're setting yourself up for sales success.
