Martin Luther Yells About Inferior Anglican Christmas Hymns

1650 ratings | 125934 views
Instead of focusing on theology, the British love meditating on snow, silence, and livestock in their Christmas hymns. Martin Luther finds this annoying.

Cromwell's cost-effective Independent Baptist-Calvinist KJV Bible-believing approach to Christmas: outlawing it.

i love your videos...and this was funny, but just know, that martin luther had his flaws and was no saint. and should not be idolized "even though he did quite allot for the protestant faith across the board" and Christians. https://www.christianitytoday.com/history/issues/issue-39/was-luther-anti-semitic.html

Strefanasha (13 days ago)
come now gentlemen!! you know that Luther had a vicious temper and a foul mouth. what he might have said about such things would not be postable here, so you have not represented him accurately. and this brings up a question: why, if he believed in the grace of God was he not transformed by it? answer he did not but he as so consumed with hate for the church that deceived him that his hate fest was essentially all that mattered to him, and which is why I reject the Reformation outright. Oh, he had some sounder doctrine. but no fruit. and we all know what sound doctrine with no fruit is worth
Superfluous video and proof that Lutherans are taken with themselves. Lutherans act as if they own heaven and that it is German.

Rev. Stephen A. Cakouros obviously it’s Catholic so mostly latinos lol jk

I don't celebrate Christmas.

Hey the animals and hay have a christological significance in reference to the Eucharist. This is why they are emphasized in the icons of the nativity, “I am the bread of Heaven” stuff ya know

I never noticed this. Now this Catholic is immensely interested in Lutheran hymns

Instead of focusing on the gospel and winning souls, the Lutherans love meditating on how right they are and how wrong it is to write songs about wintertime, and instead spend valuable time doing "God's work" making snarky, smug YouTube videos that only snarky smug Lutherans would find amusing. Martin Luther would find this annoying.

I'm a Methodist and I find it extremely amusing!

And THAT is why there are no popular Lutheran Christmas Carols.

Socialist hymns are better than any christian music
emily brennan (9 months ago)
Did you know socialist William Morris wrote two Christmas carols? "Masters in This Hall" and "Snow in the Street." Also, "In the Bleak Midwinter" was written by one of his circle, Christina Rossetti.
Robert Moulton (10 months ago)
Grandstanding about why being a Lutheran is wonderful again are we, instead of working for the greater glory of God? Although I find much of what you have to say humorous I fail to see how this is beneficial to Christ at all. Well interdenominational fighting is so much fun it does give Satan a rather wonderful opportunity to take more souls....

"We sing about God in the flesh (Jn 1:1-3) fulfilling biblical prophecy (Lk 24:27), destroying the works of the devil (1 Jn 3:8), burying sin under his infant feet and bringing heaven to earth by His flesh that was sent to be torn apart for our sins upon the cross (Isa 52:14-15; 53:3-5)" I am using this from now on when describing why we as Christians celebrate Christmas when confronted by the HRM crowd. Thank you LutheranSatire, God bless!

Funny , but this is obviously not the current super liberal Lutheran evangelical church in the US which revamped scripture for a pro same sex union stance . Guessing this is new Luther of the Missouri Synod of a few thousand members ?? Let's see the 'new Lutheran Luther ' he can make fun of scripture as backward and in need of modern interpretation, l o l ! Oh wait .. he wouldn't have dug that at all .. oops It seems whatever Luther believed in then didn't take hold with the vast majority of his current followers . Perhaps you should make fun of your Lutheran churches current stance and not so much anyone else .. unless of course you do agree with the current stance in which case you shouldn't be making fun of anyone else's theology. I think your drunk on ignorance and need to sit down.

I briefly attended an Anglo-Catholic (High-Church Anglican) church here in Australia for a few months and they had some of the most beautiful hymns I've ever heard. Not sure where you're getting this from, it's not even accurate.
Carson Michael (1 year ago)
As an Anglican, this is too funny and too true.
Chuck Bell (1 year ago)
In defense of the Vicar and Mr. Tompkins, they are writing a carol, not a hymn. Plus, it is just another example of we Protestants can find a reason to fight each other.

Silent night. Original title "Stille Nacht" written by Franz Gruber, an Austrian. Refers to the silence that night. At least he didn't mention snow.

How about using the liturgy of St John Chrysostom where we fully enumerate every aspect of our theology like the mentioning and The Hypostatic union and invoking the trinity over 40 times? Why not like The Eastern Orthodox Church Chant entire psalms? How about that?

As an Anglican, I am profoundly offended. Not all Anglican Christmas hymns mention animals or snow. Only a couple.

Just thought I'd point out that Joy to the World was written by a British dude. (Not sure if he was Anglican or not though.) Then again it was originally written about the RETURN of Christ, so it may not technically count. :P

what.... those aren't anglican hymns... those are modern Christmas songs
Clay McDermott (1 year ago)
Wait, Im sorry, but Stille Nacht, is not Anglican originally. And the lyrics get real religiousy real fast.
Winnington (1 year ago)
+Tyler Lowe well that hymn is quite nice admittedly ... But I guess I'm a high Anglican and don't really like the rest of the "jingle bells" stuff
Tyler Lowe (1 year ago)
Possibly. Many Anglicans joined evangelic churches during the height of the American Restoration Movement in the 1800s, so Im certain there are a few "crossed lines" throughout the hymnal timeline. That being said, "Silent night....Holy night....all is calm, all is..."
Winnington (1 year ago)
+Tyler Lowe hmmm I think they're far more evangelist than Anglican

The Germans are good at producing their own songs of that sort:Leise rieselt der Schnee, Still und starr ruht der See, Weihnachlicht glänzet der wald. Freue dich,’s Christkind kommt bald! Freue dich,’s Christkind kommt bald! And the Germans are good at coming up with Christmas carols that turn out to be more about Mary, like "Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging" and "Joseph Lieber, Joseph Mein'".And the Anglicans have some decent ones.  "Once in Royal David's City" is very nice if one drops the works-righteous third and fourth verses; "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen" is pretty solid, as is "What Child Is This".

Alexandra Lee (2 years ago)
Yeah! Or what about this one by Johann Schop: (to ERMUNTRE DICH) Break forth, O beauteous heav'nly light, And usher in the morning. Ye shepherds, shrink not with affright: The day of grace is dawning. This Child, though weak in infancy, Our confidence and joy shall be, The pow'r of Satan breaking, Our peace with God now making. O dearest Child, whom I adore, Whose grace surpasses measure; My Brother, whom I cherish more Than earth with all its treasure -- Haste from Thy manger to depart, Oh, come and dwell within my heart! With joy will I receive Thee, A cradle there will give Thee.

I'm a Catholic with German ancestory, so I may be biased, but when we [Catholics] borrow hymns, I always prefer the Lutheran ones to the Anglican ones... the odd thing is that I, as a musician, am in a HUGE minority with this view.....

+The Bonus Level Yeah- I've had that argument with myself... if we could get the Byzantine or Russian style of chant, and just have it in Latin, that would be amazing.
Trevor Romae Magna (2 years ago)

English people having fun and making fun of Germans and Germans getting upset not least because German comedy? episode 666 or the classic line from the movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, "Because ya are Blanche, ya are"
Eric Scholtens (2 years ago)
I love this, but it would have been a lot funnier if the title wasn't inherently condescending. It would have worked infinitely better if it was a commentary on English Christmas carols in general. Whatever good points it makes are undermined pretty severely by the need to make it an insult against a specific branch of Christianity.
Jersey2tall62 (2 years ago)
A Christmas carol is better when it is geared toward harmonious choirs or choirs with soloists, not softly singing soloists or in unison when only tenors and sopranos can reach all the notes. Your Christmas "carol" here is good lyrically, but fails on a musical level . I just don't see myself sitting around the Christmas tree with my kids softly moaning the proposed "carol" here...BUT, the point of the lessson is on target and well taken!

As one would expect, the pseudo-Anglican bits are whimsical and a bit of fun, but the Luther with the American accent is as disagreeable as the German original. I think I will go sing a Catholic Christmas carol in German as an antidote to all of this. Gute nacht.

Paul Barnes (2 years ago)
My favorite hymn at Christmas is "In the Bleak Midwinter" by Christina Rossetti (music by Holtz). It's my favorite because the poet uses the imagery of Victorian winters as a metaphor for the human condition at Christ's advent. I think Dr. Luther would approve.
Liv Jackson (2 years ago)
+Paul Barnes I doubt it, far too much stuff about the weather! He likes ones that get straight to the theology, apparently

I have to admit I think about this a lot at Christmas time
Liv Jackson (2 years ago)
Maybe Anglican carols have more memorable tunes ;-) Also, being a bit less theological probably makes them more appealing to a wider range of people as not everyone is all that religious... Even Richard Dawkins has said he likes singing (Anglican) carols... I'm not sure if that will improve your opinion of them though :-/
Gun Bunny (2 years ago)
"Our hymns are better!" And the Catholics perk up their ears.

You Lutherans could take a page from the Anglican hymnals. A page. One. Scenery's important. ;) But in all honesty, as a devout Catholic, this was HILARIOUS.
