I absolutely adore this film. I hold it pretty close to me and hate when people are unfairly critical of it.

Disney should make a live action version of Atlantis: The lost empire. Something like Avatar? That would be so cool! Too bad the movie is so underrated.
Mr Pixels (2 months ago)
This is literally my favorite animated movie.

LOOOOOOVE This Movie!!!
Hewkii (3 months ago)
It seems that this film was later become more and more popular. And the second part of this film should be a series but it was a flim instead, that explains why the style (like shading) was more flat and has a more series-look. I bought Atlantis: The Lost Empire for Blu-Ray. :3

I adore this movie what a childhood memory I was 2 years old when this movie came out and I've watched it so many times throughout the years!

I LOVE this film. It's such an underappreciated little gem. I just adore the world that was created for this movie and Milo is beyond endearing.

I loved Atlantis so much. ❤😭

Funny thing is that I'm not the biggest disney fan when it comes to all the singing and princesses. Literally all of my all time favorite disney movies are the non princess ones. Especially the less singing of not no singing. Atlantis is a favorite of mine I literally to this day go on a binge watching of this movie and the other Atlantis movie

Sterling thanks for this video honestly knew few disney films that were less musical more action like atlantis why it was underated for same reason that disappointed over a great disney action adventure film I saw in theater in summer of 2001 before going back to school that year. I wouldn't necessarily say atlantis one of my favorite Disneys, but it was nice break from Disney musicals and excellent summer treat I'm still a little disappointed today it doesn't have the respect it deserves by critics. So thank you so much for this video positive note for atlantis. And hey appreciate you included Mulan one of my favorite next Lion King loved the best in my Disney childhood still singing to either today as much as love break from musical disney all the same like atlantis that was my awesome end to summer that year before going back to school that year. Then 9/11 ruined rest of my year saw at school live news at school that morning...But that aside, I enjoyed this video a positive note for an under-appreciated disney that was awesome break from musical Disney that summer. Carry on with your Down to Disness Sarah. :)

I remember loving this movie in the box office when I saw it as a kid in 2001, even when I rewatch it now.

Because of this I’m willing to give this movie another shot.

...So you're telling me that if they made that submarine ride, I could have ridden inside the Ulysses submarine during the times my family and I went to Disneyland and world?! A POX ON ALL WHO MADE THIS MOVIE FLOP!!!!! Seriously, though, this movie is one of my favorite films of all time and it is a shame that it isn't recognized as much as it really should.
vladi569 (6 months ago)
One of my favorite movies from Disney. And I have no idea why it still is as underrated and not many people talk about this one. It had probably the best animation from 2D Disney animated movies, amazing effects and really great cast of characters.
Katie Mcdevitt (6 months ago)
i really like the movie a lot! i even designed a character to look like kida!
habbogigi (7 months ago)
always a favorite since I was kid, cool and badass, blood explosions death. kick-ass villains. loved it.

Another reason this movie was overlooked, was because it had the misfortune of being released one month after "Shrek".

Underappreciated movie. I was at a convention where crispin freeman was one of the VA's chosen to be part of the con and from what I heard from him, there was plans to make a TV series based on the atlantis movie( hence the sequel movie being made) but the idea was canceled.

How can you make a mythology about a world empire falling because of hubris, imperialism, economic inequality and moral decay boring?

If Disney would remake one animated movie into a live action movie I would love to see if they could pull off Atlantis. Also the movie is just incredible to watch with a good home theater setup. I still need to buy the Blu-ray.
James Moyner (9 months ago)
I just watched this movie on the Blu-ray I bought last week and it looks great. I love this movie it is amazing, fun, funny, has interesting characters, a good villain, an awesome warrior Princess who is the first to become a Queen in a Disney Film over a decade before Frozen! Also Kida was one of my childhood crushes!!!

This remains my favorite movie in the Disney filmography. Too bad they no longer do traditionally animated action movies anymore :C

Awesome analysis on Atlantis :D You nailed so much about Atlantis' production and release. Only bit of info that's missing was how the movie was originally going to be all about the journey to Atlantis, and a potential second movie would be about Atlantis itself (an idea that would've seriously helped with character development and plot pacing, but alas that would be too risky) and how Atlantis would've gotten it's own TV show, which sadly didn't manifest due to the movie not performing well (though three of it's episodes got to become a reality in the form of the Direct to Video "sequel") For my own thoughts on Atlantis, I too think it's a unique Disney movie with great art and I love it for it's lore and action. However, I can agree with the critics that the cast could've been utilized better and the story's pacing feels odd. Like, I do love the characters for their personalities and lines (Vinny is the best), but they don't really get to do much, or at least make any true contributions to the story. Compare to "The Incredibles", where all the major characters do something that advances the story, but in Atlantis the only characters who really do that are Milo, Rourke, Helga, and Kida (who, even then, spends the entire climax of the movie as a plot device needing to be rescued). The rest of the cast just provide humor and colorful lines, which is all well and good but that just takes away time from the movie that would be better suited to the story. I like Atlantis regardless, but I can agree it's flawed and I wish it would get a live action remake that can iron out those kinks (unfortunately, Disney views Atlantis as a shameful mistake, so chances of that are low...)

I truly loved Atlantis: The Lost Empire. It’s a jem, a diamond in the rough. This film ignited a passion of mine for myths and history. I remember I even introduced it to my year 5 schoolmates and sort of started a fixation on it when it came to vhs and DVD.

You summarized everything about this movie perfectly - It's not a musical adventure fantasy, it's an action adventure! It has forever given me a sci fi vibe, although I can't really pin it to anything in particular. Perhaps it's the Jules Verneish-ness of the plot.. An aspect that really stuck with me was how realistic and gritty the villains were portrayed. The weapons weren't depicted as flintlock rifles and swords, and the grunt villians were uniform and standard (unlike the pirates from Barbossa's crew in the first Pirates' movie for example). What the movie avoided brilliantly (perhaps except from with Rourke's characther) was that the bounty hunters weren't shown to be comically evil or stupid - They were clearly profesionals in it for the money. The fact that the movie is set just post-WW1 lends merit to this idea - That none of these people are in it to kill; They've just been desensitized from the war, and have found a new way to make a living as non-moral adventure capitalists. It really felt like a true bounty hunter army, down to the army suits, the faceless, uncharacterized gas masks and realistic firearms - Not your standard comic-relief clumsy disney army.

This is one of my FAVORITE movies. I hate that it is so underrated and how AMAZING would that ride have been?!
Nick the Dreamer (1 year ago)
Turning the Submarine Voyage into an Atlantis ride has been confirmed by Disney to have been a plan for that ride in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. It was also supposed to become a Treasure Planet themed ride, too (they would have drained the water and made the layout seem as if you're flying on one of those smaller space boats). Unfortunately, due to the failures in the box office, neither plan worked. The Submarine Voyage would be forever shut down in Walt Disney World to become a bit of a land-fill and a Little Mermaid Meet-And-Greet with a King Tridant water area and eventually become New Fantasyland. At least, as you mentioned, the Submarine Voyage in Disneyland would find a way to keep existing with a Finding Nemo theme. Also, it should also be noted that the late Leonard Nimoy was also in this film as Kida's father, the King of Atlantis.

Could you Great Mouse Detective at some point? I feel like that helped restore faith in animation, which led to Oliver and Company and Little Mermaid, and it was the first Disney animated movie to use computer animation (the climax in the clock tower). Also a good success given that it came out after Black Cauldron. It's also one of my favorite movies from the Bronze Age :3

Mary poppins, Hercules or princess and the frog
I think that if it was to come out now, it would get better ratings.I put it in the same category as Nightmare before Christmas, just wanting for Atlantis to get its big break. I would love to see Atlantis as live action. One day maybe.

I watched this again recently, and just love it. I always thought the Leviathan was so cool! I was also surprised how that really iconic submarine... doesn't even last that long in terms of screen time. They dive. Talk a while. Monster chase. Explode. Haha!

it makes me sad because I think disney had a wonderful opportunity to revamp this underrated film. It would have been so cool to see a live action atlantis and Atlantis be where Pandora is now in Walt Disney World. Flights of wonder could have been their flying fish car things, they still could have had bioluminecent everything because of the life crystals... ugh it would be beautiful.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO BADLY!

Atlantis is one of my favorite Disney movies. When I was younger, my family used to drive from Florida (where we live) to Pennsylvania (where we have family), and I remember my dad would bring a tiny television and put it between the front seats. He hooked it up to something, I don't know what, but in any case, my brother and I would bring VHS tapes (we also had a VCR hooked up somehow. I have no idea how this worked, but it did XD), and we'd watch movies the whole 18+ hour ride. My favorite to watch after the sun would go down was Atlantis - there's just something about watching it in a dark car that I can't really explain, but I loved it. Also Audrey Ramirez is bae.

Oh my god! No wonder I was attracted to the Hellboy universe when I was older. I was already familiar with the series' creator's work for Atlantis, which is one of my favorite movies because of how different it is from Disney's usual formula. Not under marketed but definitely needed a better reputation from fans back when it came out, and I should know; I was 8 when it came out, and while it veered WAY OFF COURSE from the sparkling fairytale musical movies I was used to from Disney, I loved that it chose a different path, encouraging my curious and knowledge hungry mind to be even curiouser. Speaking of Star Trek, not only was the creator of the Klingon and Vulcan dialects brought on for the movie, but Leonard "Spock" Nimoy himself is the voice of the King of Atlantis. Considering how popular steampunk, mythology and science-fiction exploration, and synthesis of multiple animation inspirations and styles are all now, if Atlantis got a re-release in theaters, it would finally get the box office performance it deserves.

Atlantis will always be one of my favorite non traditional Disney films! I would have loved to experience an Atlantis submarine ride at Disneyland!!!! Also Princess Kida needs more recognition! She is awesome! Thanks Sarah! Can you do a Down to Disness on Princess & the Frog or Moana!!!
Wow so many facts that I didn't know about!! Atlantis is one of my fave disney films and films in general.  It is highly underrated and I even saw somewhere that they were thinking of a Atlantis coaster for replacing 2000 leagues under the sea attraction in disney world before the new fantasyland came around (Thank you Marthinsvidsdotnet on youtube!) I was sad that, that attraction never saw a green light if the movie was a big success! I consider Kida one of the best disney heroines and princess to.  She's consider a fave of mine ^^ and its sad that its not a popular movie like how treasure planet and black cauldron have been treated over the years,  yet are cult classics to disney fans! :D
